Extremely sad to hear, but it's still a leap to say that it prevents him from ever giving his best on the field again.
I have had a good look at the state of the Crows. Why does any of that mean he's "broken" and is incapable of mentoring anyone else? His reason for stepping down was to focus on enjoying his footy more as well as spending time with his family. How does that suggest he's "broken" and will never give his best effort again?

Zac didn’t walk out on the club he wasn’t offered a contract.

Bods Eade told him he didn't want him he also said some appalling things about him behind his back that got back to him. Had a real nasty streak did Rodney.
However l would rather have him as a back up over Nichols.
Smith is pretty useless

So I'm not sure removing the NEAFL's top ruckman for a reheated souffle like Zac makes any sense at all
Nicholls has had very few opportunities at senior level, but a couple of years ago he competed very well in the NAB Cup
Can't be any worse than what Blighty used to say about him
