We have the easiest draw in the league, if we improve even marginally we will jump back up towards the eight. By all measurements we had a very tough draw in 2018, that is not an excuse, just fact. I wouldn't be surprised if we won more than 10 games next year. Lunch sounds good, lol.

Yes agree with this. Would be an understatement to say I am bored of it.

Not totally convinced it’s the easiest draw myself , but I love how the media jump on after one season
and drop off teams again after one season .
Let’s see Collingwood , Melbourne & Essendon go playing better performed sides twice and to be perfectly honest prefer Stkilda slip under the radar at present without all the hype.

As for a lot of Sunday games that’s fine for me , will be able to attend more games personally.

Just a couple things didn’t Carlton beat The All Stars ...Essendon last year
Didn’t Stkilda beat the Demons on their turf last year .

Most experts had Eagles down bottom last year.

Let’s see how the season pans out for mine lots of surprise upsets await from many clubs.

I agree, it's a commercially devastating fixture but in reality it's our own fault. If we can rebuilt the perceived momentum we will attract players, sponsors and members.
Great post there gringo......a great opportunity was set up for us this season with our fixture and we blew it big time.

As Matt F has said numerous times over the years....we just have to build the club.....and that is slowly happening.

I for one am tired at hearing that we are a lowly or small club...….we just have to keep working very hard at getting bigger.

The financial year finished on Wednesday......it will be very interesting to see how we fared.

I understand that commercially the fixture is poor but tbh I don't really care about that this year.

I reckon this fixture gives us the best chance to WIN games of football with double up against the worst performed sides in the comp.

Commercially, we will never go without because we like all other 17 teams are vital in terms of making money for the league. It's like when people talk about the salary cap, it's paid by the Commission anyway.

I think the draw is brilliant in regards to winning games and giving us a chance to develop some of the younger brigade.

We will become relevant when we start challenging, then the rewards will come. Like Carlton, like Gold Coast, like the Bulldogs. Who knows. In 3 years time we do it right and we'll be playing in prime time whilst Melbourne and Hawks are back to Sunday Twilight. It's how it works.

Agree 100 % there Stewart66....there's normally 1 maybe 2 "bolters" that rise up the ladder every season.

Last season it was the Eagles....Pies and Roos.

Only one Age "expert" had either the Pies or Eagles to make the 8......and that was for the Pies to finish 8th.

I've still got my Herald Sun pre season mag......will go thru it and see what everyone predicted.

Is the restructure Matt's work or Lethlean's. for me, seems more like Lethlean's, so where does that leave Matt?
so just to make this clear Matts main failing was richo not living up to expectation and because he signed him its on him ... yet the good work Lethlean is doing isnt on Matt after all he also signed him ...
my veiw on the situation was Matt made the mistake of focusing more on getting St Kilda as a business running well and putting to much faith in the football part to look after itself ... i reckon about 1/4 of the way through the season he knew he made the error in letting the football side look after itself so with the board they went and got Lethlean to steer that side of the ship ...
from that point the normal St Kilda thing would be the two egos of Matt and Simon would have caused a rift and the club would be ripped pillar to post ... and there was rumour of that being the case .. but from what ive heard so far thats not the case both men have put ego aside to work together to right the ship of our club... honestly its the most mature St Kilda has ever been ...

from the fixture side of things i would bet the club knew this was coming they would have fought to get it better but the season just gone meant we were going to be up against it ... thankfully our club is used to making do with pittance from the gate reciepts its been that way for a generation, the lucky thing is we now (thanks to Matt) have a stadium deal that isnt going to further punish us for our low attendance .. we wont make money (nothing new there) but we wont lose money (a handy thing) .. as for our sponsors all of them have signed on for 2019 so we are fine for that but the key to all of this is we need to get back to playing good football.. we need to start producing exciting footy, even if we dont win we need to make our game look attractive... thats the key the AFL bang on about that to the clubs every week attractive footy gets bums on seats ...

freo will not be push over next year with their two trades of Hogan and lobbe
we have heard it all before with freo .... they go out and buy big but then still dont deliver ... theres something fishy about the hogan thing Melb were too content to let him go for my mind ... Freo also have this uncanny ability to get the WA born players to come back home only for them to become complacent and shadows of the players they were away from home... also losing Neal is going to hurt them a hell of a lot

For all this moaning about the fixture , did you want a draw where we play GCS and Carlton 11 times each , Its only a shit fixture in some peoples eyes because we are an average team atm . If we get our act together i think the draw wont look so bad and we can actually win some games.

No doubt we have been shafted the last 2 years with the fixture!
But in real terms there are NO excuses next year....Take away the lack of exposure and no fri nights
But from a footy perspective, it is much more favorable than recent years!

No reason we can't spike significantly next year providing we have a club in harmony
pulling in the same direction, with a bit of luck injury wise and some early momentum ( which is crucial }
then anything is possible, as has been evidenced within the comp last 3 years!

I also don't necessarily subscribe to the view that the first 5 weeks are that hard!
If we are ever to go anywhere, these are the teams we Should be beating!

It's a great fixture if we're good enough.

We need to be beating teams like Hawthorn and Adelaide if we are to make any real progress. We host both.

We also play Essendon early in the season at the Docklands. Another game we can win if good enough.

Lots of family friendly times also pleases me.

Nothing fishy, they got him with a navicular stress fracture....the same thing killed the career of Matthew Egan and Trengove. James Hird missed quite a bit of footy once he got them too. Navicular injuries can be very hard to come back from.

Media in this country is generally trash, especially the football media. They are qualified to write and that's the extent of it. They don't know intricacies and season projections anymore than a bloke sitting on his couch at home. They may slightly have more of an idea (only slightly) given it's their job to report on the game, but they still get it incredibly wrong.

I stopped listening to that nonsense a long time ago. All crap. I make up my own mind based on what I see, and I can guarantee half of the people on this Saints forum know more about the Saints than some reporter from the Hun or Age.

I'd listen to a dozen guys on here over anyone in the paper.

thats what i mean ... i had it on very good authority that Hogan had zero interest in Freo then all of a sudden hes requesting them ... reading between the lines Melbourne know he is a long shot to get back to his best , WCE realised this , freo just dont care cause they got him...

Well said. I am lucky the Hun is behIND A paywall, so Iam spared its nonsense.

This.
We’ve had a year to get over the loss of leadership of Roo and Joey.
Unfortunately the next tier in Ross, Bruce (inj) Weller and Newnes just didn’t step up.

My money’s on Steele, Gresh, Billings, Acres and Paddy, with the help of Hanners, to really step up leadership wise next season.
Hanners will be a rally good acquisition to provide leadership

Great post st_trav…..IMO....you have nailed the current situation.

Geez a tough crowd here.

I have us on 6 and 5 by the bye, so Richo and co will be just fine.

Gold Coast - win
Essendon - loss
Fremantle - win
Hawthorn - win
Melbourne - loss
Adelaide - win
Giants - loss
West Coast - loss
Collingwood - loss
Carlton - win
Port Adelaide - win

Bit of optimism wouldn't hurt.

Cant see us beating Adelaide or Port , look whats happened in the past when we got a plane to NZ , thumped by shit teams

In all fairness Captain(love that scotch ad on TV by the way)….those 3 years in NZ...we were a crap team in 2013 and 2014.....only marginally better in 2015.

the review done by Lethlean showed it was the support around Richo that was the issue , you admit that the staff around him were not up to it so again its a case of improve the areas of weakness and see how that changes the result .... Richo may be a revelation with the right people around him ... he might not ... but if he isnt then at least we have tried every avenue to make it work with richo ... the same thing was done with hardwick , it would have been easy to sack him but instead they improved those around him and set him up to succeed ...

do you think we really need to see that. you even think richo is no good. its purely saving face, because they dont wanna cop the heat from sacking him early plus the pay out that goes with it.

We're playing Adelaide in Melbourne.

We play them twice. The trip to Adelaide is later in the season.

And the China game would be a coin-toss. I don't see why we aren't a good chance there.

yeah i think we do .... you are correct i think richo is not up to it but in that same line of thinking i was convinced Hardwick wasnt up to it, i also thought that Buckley wasnt up to it... but things can change we see that brininging in the right support can bring a 180 turnaround in fortunes ... yes the payout plays a part as does the selling of the vision that we are strong and stable to potential targets but at the same time we have made the decision to trek this path so we may as well see it through , sacking him now or sacking him end of year (if he doesnt perform) makes little differance to where we are at as a club ... i think we are hopeful that 2018 was just an abomination and that a reset of a few areas will put us back on track, i think we fear we are so far off track we need to rebuild .. if its the latter then we at least get one more year of Gresh and Steven .. if its the first then great lets get going

i havent watched the previous china games i only know GCS lost both of them but thats not really a good gauge as GCS would lose to the Subiaco Lions away from Metricon... so how did Port play over there ? i dont remember any reports of it being a great game so was it a case of them playing china well or just GCS are woeful ??
i know we have taken it right up to Port the last couple times we have faced them so maybe we are a good chance in China

Better chance in China than Adelaide methinks.
