Why is it okay to show sympathy for Goodes but it's not okay to show sympathy for the child? Do you not think Goodes is at some fault in any way here? That's all I was irked about. Goodes did nothing wrong or couldn't have handled himself any better, and the child is completely to blame. I think it's much more than just that. If people were racists they would be booing every indigenous player regardless if they were calling out racism or not. That's not the definition of racism. A lot of the people booing Goodes aren't racist. They simply hold the same views as I do.
i think the point you are missing is that lots and lot of people booing goodes really didnt know why they were booing goodes in the first place they just did cause it was the thing happening ... they previously didnt like him but not boo'd him then all of a sudden after the stand they boo'd him ... i know that first WCE game after the stand the racial abuse thrown around was sickening it was like the booing opened a flood gate of racial taunts - so while you are most likely not racist you by booing did participate on something that was born out of the degrading of a player because he stood up for himself ...

Please explain

super interesting point that i think resonates with some of the issues we had in the past

basically had footage to show how they get sucked into the contest and the issues it creates for them. one passage of play they had 4 demons players go to 2 saints forwards. had other issues showing how quickly we ran forward out numbering their defenders. melb don't run fast enough offensively.

i remember hearing i think seb ross say one of the big improvements we have had this year is they trust the one player to take on an opposition player, as opposed to the past where 2 or 3 would go to them to help out. now its the responsibility of the one player to make the tackle stick and they trust them to get it done. i think there's some slater influence on that too.

melb seem to have some of the issues we have had in the past

This racial stuff is way too serious for me. C'mon boys we're 2nd on the ladder. 😅

Also have you guys heard the rodney eade, will minson tape? Its been 24hrs and i haven't stopped laughing.

that can't be real

No. It's because none of the other 70 players decided to make a point of racism after a 15 odd year career by highlighting a pre-pubescent girl in the front row at the footy where everyone is experiencing adrenaline and heightened emotions.
thats a cop out ... as a fan you dont get a free pass because the adrenaline was high ....
Goodes was lucky in the fact that off the back of guys like Winmar and Long the first part of his career he could just play footy .. unfortunatly for him the end part of his career (and he isnt the only player to say this) but the message seemed to be getting somewhat lost on the public and the head of racism was sneeking back ... i dunno mybe the rise of social media conecting people with likeminded veiws empowered the racist to come out and speak out their hate .. maybe the rise of politicians gaining popularity on the back of racist veiws brought it on but he and others started to cop it more later in his carreer and even now in 2019 where we all know how bad racism is we still see guys like Eddie Betts cop it

People's brains don't fully develop until they're well into their 20s and we don't hold people legally responsible for most things until they're 18. There's a reason for that. It's because the last parts of your brain to develop are the parts controlling higher function like reasoning, compassion, empathy and rationality. Are you saying we should publicly name and shame; on a national level, every high school bully because they've been taught not to bully so they should know better? Assuming you aren't, I don't see how it's different for a 13 year old girl just because she said something outside of the schoolyard.
my nephew is 10 ... he knows calling people names based on their skin colour is wrong .. a 13 year old girl may not know the context as to why calling a black man ape is wrong but she would know its not a complement and its job was to single him out because of his race ...
if you think only a 20 year old brain can process that then i hate to tell you kids get more then you think they do

We need and Adam Goodes thread, this is going around and around in circles.

I didn't like the guy as a footballer, i was told i must be a racist, until my mate pulled said person up
and said that i have a lot of indigenous friends, i never said another word, but the look on the woman who called me racist was priceless.
hate to break it to you but having indig friends doesnt make it impossible to be racist ... being indig yourself still doesnt make it impossible to be racist .. treating anyone differantly and downgrading a person based on their colour or ethnic background makes you a racist regadless of who your friends are or what you background is ...
you can certainly not like some one but when the reason you dont like someone is because they are a certain colour or race then there is a problem ... i dont like Phanson but its not cause she has red hair i dont like her for her character not because of her ethnic background

I take people on face value, i dont care if you are black white or pink, you are either a good person or prick. I dont care what race you are, i am not a racist, never have been never will be, just like everyone else in the world i bleed red and cry salty tears, the colour of the skin is irrelevant. I also love Native American Indians, and the vietnamese guy up the bottle shop

About time we moved on from this clap trap and talked football.

because a lot of people do not care as long as you are quiet and "in your place". they are fine with indigenous players as long as they play the game, stay happy, stay quiet. but as soon as someone tries to confront them with the harsh reality of what is occurring in the community, as soon as they're out spoken, they have an issue with it.

as i said to george, why is it he was treated with such furious opposition through a sense of dealing him justice for his stance, yet other players who have committed much worse acts, barely attract any attention at all. some are even defended by AFLHQ and their respective clubs.

your words on gazza are perfect. its exactly what he is. the AFL defending him is pathetic. all from an ex cats employee.
Oh dear, please read my other post. Racist slurs like yours infer other indigenous players are Uncle Toms.

That myth is totally exposed for what it is.

Hahahahahahahaha!

I didn't believe that the shouting guy was Rodney Eade until they called him "Rocket"! So funny! Was he the head coach then? Who was the calmer guy running the show in the recording?

Jesus, there were noises amongst us to get this guy in to our club as coaching director or something, glad that didn't happen. For him to be losing his shit in a league game like that, no thanks! We need cooler heads in charge at our club.

nailed it

watching it live, i didn't realise she was 13 either. i thought it was an older lady going mental. it wasn't until they released she was a child that i realised.

now imagine you are goodes, in the moment, how is he to know?

tbh one thing i do think happened is that goodes knew he regularly copped racism when playing from the crowd. i think he knew it was going to happen coming into the game. i think he knew he was going to make a stand the first moment he copped it and he did. he reacted. without realising who did it. then he had to take that on. he obviousy was very shaken up by it, given he left the ground.
Goodes had every right to call out racism toward him

His actions afterwards towards her and his grandstanding then the usual favouritism when he incited the crowd was a huge reason.

But obviously virtue signalling will make sure George and I are eventually call racists in this conversation.

I find it interesting the calling out of racism by other indigenous and Sudanese hasnt been greeted with resounding booing, and the response to this is racial slurs in the inference these people are somehow subservient lickspittles to whites ( say that to David Wirripunda, Michael Long or Majak Daw to their faces, see where that gets you), or their stances against racism wasn't somehow as worthy as Goodes.

So who booed Nicky after he lifted his jumper. The greatest anti racism photo in Australian history. Hmmmm.

Really disappointing that the outrage industry got hold of this and shouted down any other more nuanced views.

Easier to scream RACIST!!! at everyone I suppose.

Was he racially abused - Yes.
Is that bad - Yes.
Was everyone racially abusing him - No.
Did he act appropriately - No.
Could he have acted more appropriately - Yes.

I don't have issue with him standing up for his people. He could've gone about it in a much more productive way and he didn't have to humiliate a child on national TV to get his point across.

Nicky copped worse in his time in football but didn't do what Goodes did - he made one gesture post game that changed the landscape forever. If it was a child giving Nicky shit I doubt Nicky would've turned around and wanted them out of the ground. Eddie had bananas thrown at him and raised the issue with the AFL while the football community got behind him and supported him. Clubs are now taking it upon themselves to weed out the imbeciles at the football who want to berate a player from over the fence. But we don't need to ruin childrens lives in the process. Counsel the familiies, inform communities, but don't do it on a national stage like that. He is a w***er for doing what he did. He could've gone about it 100 different ways and I would've had no issue at all. I feel for what he has had to go through but at the same time feel for the child who now has to live with that. It was a horrible situation but Goodes should've handled it better. And my view on that won't change.
Great post

Yep - Round 17, 2009.

Beat them 106-61. Riewoldt & Milne kicked 5 each, BJ had 37 touches, Dal Santo 39.

unbelievable. that's crazy. it's like having someone on the woodstocks, 20 cans in, who's done 3 fat lines, trying to pull it altogether, just going absolutely mental in the box

is that leon cameron trying to actually do work in there?

That is bloody hilarious. Was that Leon Cameron trying to settle Rocket down?

And it's a basic foundation of team sport that you trust your teammate and don't compromise your position by diving in unless absolutely necessary, and that judgement is what makes or breaks you as a defender. Maybe they are being coached to do that or something, but it beggars belief.

No idea who were the assistants at the time. I reckon there's worse out there too. Alves would've been similar. Malthouse. Clarkson I reckon could give a bit too when he loses it. That was pretty bad though I must say!

Edit - Yeah it was Cameron, hahaha.

It's hard to believe isn't it?

I was watching him on Open Mike last night and here was some mention of him getting emotional in the box, but never did I expect this is what was being alluded to and that it was this extreme.

He even sounded extreme for someone in the outer!

He said today that some of it was him & other parts was an impersonation.

The calmer guy sounded like Leon Cameron?

Yeah, definitely Leon Cameron - he has a distinct voice, it's unmistakable.

Poor bloke, stuck in a box with a lunatic like that!

Do you know that or are you just assuming that everyone was stupid? I mean it was hardly a story you had to dig for and I don't think many people that go to the footy would have absolutely no idea about what's going on in the footy world while simultaneously just joining in on booing Goodes just because he's indigenous.

And we don't like Goodes because he's a race-baiting, politically motivated twat. Not because he's indigenous.
