There's a few running defenders and small forwards in the top end of this years draft. If we can't trade one, then draft one.

Jack Martin will be the small forward to watch with interest. If Gold Coast drop off and only win around 4 games, he may request a trade.

GCS may also be supportive of trading Martin once Rankine gets himself up and running later this year.

I must be the only person here who rates Parish

He's an outside mid with good running capacity. Essendon aren't doing him any favours because he's playing inside the contest more often than not.

A pick around 30 would get the job done. He's out of contract.

Also, he's not as slow as what some say he is. He's not quick off the mark but his top speed is alright.

I also think he will end up a very good footballer. Showed a bit early on and looked very good. I just think he’s going through a difficult period as a young footballer.

I'm not making any specific point with this comment, just found it interesting...If you have a look at the 18 players named in the team for this week, only 7 of them were drafted by us at a spot other than pick #1 (We have 4 first overall draft picks, 6 players recruited from other clubs, and 1 undrafted rookie). Of those 7 players, only 2 of them were not drafted by us as first rounders (Curnow & Fisher). Not sure if this is a good or bad thing, just really noticed it looking at this weeks team.

Parish reminds me a lot of Paddy Dow. Can get a ton of it, just butchers it a bit. I’d definitely take Darcy on, you can never have enough top end talent.

Jack Martin would be a nice get too, but he still doesn’t fit that small forward dynamic. He’s a SPS type - plays better in the wide open spaces. Not that this is a bad thing.

I think Fisher could be an elite small forward if given the role, but are you robbing Peter to pay Paul. The dynamic of an indigenous lad like Garlett or Betts stalking the forward line is what we yearn for. I think Pickett is ideal but I fear he will be injury riddled for his career. Rather than trying to make Garlett into Chris Yarran, put him forward and release him, he could be a good option. I’d also still consider a Jake Neade in the mid-season draft for a trial. His forward pressure was very strong. Didn’t kick a heap of goals, but kept the ball in. Low cost for possible gain.

Papley and Gresham are high on the wish list for mine but gettable? I’m not sure.

If Pickett got himself fit I would love to see him given a crack. If!

Can’t remember where I read it (probably here tbh) but wasn’t someone saying Ainsworth had purchased all the tickets that were available on himself? As in tickettek was sold out. Forever.

Not my opinion of him though, I think he could be solid.

I agree, should be pretty high on our target list. May be players wanting to get out of Sydney as well

It shows two things to me. Past recruiters and previous coach so bad, we ended up low enough and bad enough to need so many early picks in such a short space of time and two, the current recruiters have done a very good job of nailing recent early draft picks that the kids are actually good picks. There been plenty of times in past two decades our recruiting been woeful and lots of picks wasted on iffy players that never really looked liked they belonged out there as first round picks and played way more 2nd's football than first. Or just got de-listed after three or four years having not done enough. Watson, Kane Lucas and Boeky and the alike were pissing early picks down the drain in the past.

There is also the aspect of player development. Some of the coaching really poor. I thought Malthouse was terrible in how he just destroyed Troy Menzel's development playing him injured he just learnt really poor habits and become a player that had real talent into a very poor footballer.

I was listening to the game and numerous times the SEN callers said Shiel was wide open and running forward with the ball and butchered it. It seemed he was the player Pies were not worried about.

Definitely not worth the Picks GWS were demanding for him.

It was kinda funny listening to the commentators. While the score was still pies 1-0 up one of the commentators piped up 'Shiel has had 8 touches already, the pies really need to put someone on him'

I just thought. Wtf. 8 touches that have led to a total of 0 shots on goal. Why would a coach waste time and alter his game plan to account for a ball butcher.

IMO not even close. Paddy has pace, can win clean ball inside and out and can kick goals. Doesn't panic like Parish and is about 2 years behind him in experience. Big difference. Once Paddy is fit and stronger disposal won't be an issue

Yep, exactly spot on. We are already an unclean, under-skilled team.

We need more high efficiency players, not a Dylan Shiel type. Absolutely glad we avoided him and instead landed Setterfield.

GWS pushed Shiel out the door for a reason.

Best thing is that SOS bidding on him it forced * and Dodo to pay way overs, 2 1st round picks.

Shiel is a very good player, but he is pretty scrubby by foot. Makes less-than-great decisions and his execution leaves a bit to be desired too. Rather Treloar-like, really.

Both are excellent players, with flaws. But there are few in the league who are perfect. We can live without him, and will do so.

We weren't in the hunt with our offers, but if somehow GWS accepted our 2019 1st, Shiel may be playing for us and we wouldn't have Stocker no Adelaides first....actually.....I may change my mind on that. Maybe it's a good thing. Why?

With the inclusion of every player, one has to make way.
Had have we had Shiel, he'd be a likely centre square starter, so who would have missed out and where would have we parked them.
This is something that has to be played out and it's a hard game to put all the pieces in their place, but the addition of one type can screw up the whole.

Been really happy with Stockers progress to date and maybe he's actually being slated for a back post and not midfield.
I didn't like the idea of that early on, but I get it now. It makes sense and don't discount just how important the right player in that role could be.

Simpkin really on the outer at North. What has happened there?
Thought he would have made for a good get for us a couple of years ago, but he's either not coming on, or isn't being allowed to.

North just can’t develop players. People think they just top up and neglect the draft but they have actually hit the first two rounds harder than their allocated picks.
No doubt their drafting hasn’t been great but there has to be more to it.

It's often the case that when a team doesn't perform, the deficiencies become ever so more glaring.

Their first selections since 2011: Mackenzie, Garner, McDonald, Durdin, Ben Mckay, Simpkin, Davies-Uniacke & Thomas.
Some have been injured, but regardless, that group isn't too far behind the worst of our selections through our 'horror' drafting period.

Not sure what the issue is with Simpkin, but North supporters I know, just don't want him near the main team.

I remember you being the first to draw attention to the all new Liam Jones morphing in the reserves a few seasons ago so your comments this week re the young Collingwood reserves ruckman pricked my interest.
It seems others in attendance at the reserves last week also noticed the performance of Max Lynch, no doubt our recruiting staff also took note and he appears to tick a lot of boxes of need for Carlton.
As this season is his last contracted rookie year at the woods , how and what do you see as being needed to lure him to Princes Park ?

GWS have just re-signed Hopper and Himmelberg, have Kelly, Cogs and Tomlinson out of contract this year.

Whitfield and Williams are both Free agents next year, I can easily see Whitfield being the big priority and Williams being left with a deal that doesn’t reflect his worth.

Yes , Kreuzer is always a dicey proposition body wise and is closer to the end whilst TDK is only a youngster.
Phillips and Lobbe aren’t the answer.
Lynch will have completed 3 years in the Collingwood system and might feel the opportunity and timing at Carlton might be right for him.
Not sure of the logistics of getting him across but im sure being out of contract and nominating a club it would probably be doable without much fuss.

Have a look at his goal shot stats and then watch the first couple of minutes of the GCS game. No they’re not similar footballers, but they both get it, they both butcher it. As for not panicking, Paddy does a lot of checkside roosts in the open field which is a panic kick. LOB is also a poor shot on goal for such a great kick.

We need to judge Parish on who he is as a footballer now, not his junior career. He is an ordinary footballer nowadays, waste of an early pick which is a shame for *.
