It’s genuinely fascinating. It really does feel like a ripe opportunity for the Suns to make a big line in the sand statement. They have their rescue package, this is their big reset, I think they really are in a good position to make a stand here. Could be a defining moment for them.
That said, I could just as easily see them deciding that you just can’t redraft a player who has made it clear they want out.
The drama of it is fantastic as a neutral. I hope the AFLPA stay out of it. They agreed to the current rules, and should respect them.
Wonder if we'll go back to Martin for another chat. He'd be a good get for our first pick even..

It's really going to come down to how much they want to make a point vs how stuffed they want to leave their salary cap. Blues seem like the easy answer here. At the end of the day he can out a ridiculous price on his head, get to where he wants and then add an extra year or two for peanuts and shuffle money around between years. If another team picks him up doing the second part is much harder to get him agree too, and do you want a guy on massive money taking up that much cap room who doesn't really want to be there?
Still feel like the blues get him. Suns and their cap are the big wildcard here
I really wanted us to hijack that deal when Carlton wouldn't come to the table.Wonder if we'll go back to Martin for another chat. He'd be a good get for our first pick even..
Quite possibly.. wonder if gc have that roomIf he was hypothetically to put $2mil over 2 years on his head, and then extends once getting where he wants to go for $400k over 2 years, I think the $2mil over 2 years can only be shuffled around between those 2 years from a TPP point of view. I think you can pay him $600k/year over 4 years, but from a TPP point of view he costs them $2mil over those first two years regardless.
Which is odd that they only offer a future first instead of 5..... You would assume next year's pick will be closer to mid table so 5 would have been the better pick...... So I think that's Sydney's way of manipulating the media rhetoric and controlling the expectations of fans on both sides.
If they truly believed 5 and 9 were not going to seal the deal..... Then they would have known a future first and 9 was never going to get it done.... As it was possible that the outcome for Essendon could have been worse.
In my opinion if Sydney were serious about the trade they would have at least offered 5 and 9 officially .
Nah, GC made the right call, they drew a line in the sand at last. Martin is a FA in 12 months so most likely doesn't risk going to a draft this year. GC will probably get more in compo than what Carlton were offering. And who knows they could have a good year and he decides to stay. Carlton needed to get the deal done while they had the chance. They failed big time. It’s easier to rain on the Blues and SOS but the real losers in the Martin deal is the GC. There is nothing in holding fast when a player wants to go you have to cop it but at least try salvage something. They will end up with nothing. At least SOS still has pick 9. And to be honest Martin has never lived up to his potential. If 9 becomes a star then history will show Blues made the right call.
Boy this might not be the greatest time to jump in and ask this but anyway...
Just wondering on Cutler whether you guys think he could be used as an inside mid? Someone with his size is something we are really lacking at stoppages. I can't say I know too much about him.

Hi Guys - can Tom Cutler play inside midfield? We are stacked with short people in the middle and Tom is a nice size (192cm 92kg).
Cheers
Just to respond to this while I'm here.I think it’s interesting that people are wiling to give the benefit of the doubt to Dodoro and the bombers given their track record as opposed to the Swans. I tend to think that the bombers were never interested in trading Daniher unless they got a ludicrous deal e.g. heeney and pick 9 or whatever.
Seems like a very short-sighted approach to list management. Two 1sts is a massive price for Daniher given his injury history and would have set them up for the future. I get that they think they can win a flag with Daniher next year but there’s just as big a chance Daniher plays less than 10 games before leaving.
Why wouldn't we be a B? Not generous at all.
We have done we'll in this trade period take it easy tiger.
You're the first one...Has anyone done a Shin-Bonar gag yet?
Good decision by Essendon. They didn't bring in Shiel, Smith, Saad and Stringer (jeez that's a lot of S's) to simply start a rebuild with picks that will take 5 years to mature. This is a team built to win now, players are exactly what they should have been asking for.

There's a good article I saw from SEN this morning with Dodoro explaining our stance. We wanted a player but Sydney weren't interested in including a player, which is fair. But from our perspective, draft picks are not going to replace our only good tall forward and are unlikely to really impact the midfield for a few seasons (particularly in what has been widely considered a pretty shallow draft).
So I think the club decided it would rather try and retain Joe and get him back to fitness in the hopes he might sign a new contract next year. Risky of course but the two draft picks just didn't line up with where our list is at.
From what I've seen the players were supporting keeping him and trying to convince him to stay beyond 2020.It is risky no doubt. It is a bit of a bad look though. No club wants to lose it's valuable players, and you never do get 'fair' value back, or replace the hole they are leaving. But player movement is part of the game now. When Dodoro plays super hard ball when bringing players in and trying to pay unders, then basically refuses to trade a player because you cant replace him, you have to wonder what that does for player morale and culture.
Upon saying all this, i am all for clubs holding players to contract more. We have seen a shift in the past 10 or so years, players leaving for big money and longer and longer contracts. They want the dollars and security, but as soon as it doesnt suit them they leave and break their contract. That money and contract length has to come at a price for players.
I believe Schache will become a good KPF once he gets to 26-27 years old. Like most KPF's, they need time. Hawkins the perfect example. I sincerely hope he is a career 500 goal player.
