@dlanod. Will Lyons, Skinner and Eagles have to nominate for the draft for the club to select them in the rookie draft?

Yes. They could choose to nominate just for the PSD to minimise the chance of getting picked up, but they will need to make it through that at a minimum.

Yes I'm stroking myself - (May 15th this year). Now looks like it will be in the draft we find a ruckman either a kid or some one delisted.

I’m thinking in our trades there will be a ruckman, get them in a year before Martin retires. I’m not sure Archie is a grand final ruckman. Big O, yes he is there, Martin next year then we need one so I’m thinking a Martin understudy. Dlanod I think you replied at the time that there was such a unit in the draft.

Is Archie likely to get some interest from other teams? Give half the league needs a ruck you'd think he might get picked up. Gws in particular is wholly reliant on two mature age rucks

Sydney might look at him to replace Darcy Cameron.

It’s interesting isn’t it?
Fish was pumping him up throughout the pre-season as pushing Stef for the Number 1 Ruck Position, signed a 2 year extension.
8 months later gets delisted.

To be fair to Archie he was a project player but in the washup he has shown little that would suggest he will ever be a number one ruckman at AFL level and we need a Stef successor, not a backup ruckman. Big O may never be more than a second ruck but at least he can take a grab and kick a goal whereas Smith's inability to take mark, even at NEAFL level, has been a big concern. I would suggest the club would be more than happy if another club took him and his salary off our hands. It does, however, make recruitment of a quality young ruckman a priority.

I don't see why we would want to Gold Coast to fold or be relocated, the Lions need them to be successful to get more kids into the game and develop more supporters and bless the Queensland Government's little cotton socks - build a proper and bigger stadium like WA did. The AFL need to make the Suns successful to understand if the experiment works and not let them die on the vive like the Rugby League teams there.

As a Lions supporter I dont understand the argument for relocating them to Tasmania.

Population of the Gold Coast 569,997 with a growth rate of 1.58%
Populations of South East Queensland 3.6 million

Populations of Hobart 220,000
Population of Launceston 66,000
Population of Tasmania 520,830 with a growth rate of .32%

Tasmanians participating in Australian Rules programs (2017) 19,829
Tasmanians in Australian Rules competitions (2017) 21,938

Queenslanders in Australian Rules competitions (2017) 75,214
Queenslanders in Australian Rules programs (2017) 165,764

Gold Coast AFL area ADDITIONALLY covers all the Northern Rivers of NSW including the towns of Casino, Byron Bay, Lismore, Murwillumbah and Tweed Heads

No doubt, all true and correct. Tassie has always had and probably will always have a demographic schism. Kids leave school and leave the state, heading to the mainland and big cities for job opportunities and the lifestyle. Many do return when they have families for the broader support but most of the population growth is cashed up retirees fleeing climate change/pollution/congestion/crime etc etc; the whole seachange/treechange thing.

On top of that AFL as a sport is on life support here, it was a heartland but no longer. Kid's play futsal, association football and basketball as much as AFL these days, smaller towns can't get enough players anymore as the kids leave for the cities or the mainland to find work. There are more reasons why rural AFL clubs keep folding here (and towns eventually) than just the neglect of head office. A Hobart team could fly, there's a lot of money down there now, but overall the outlook for community AFL support is deteriorating.

I know it is unlikely to happen due to our list space and given that there is a commitment from the club to re contract Skinner, Eagles and C.Lyons + A.Smith if he doesn't get picked up as a DFA but I really like Lukas Webb who has been delisted from the Bulldogs, would be worth a rookie spot IMO.

Can DFAs go straight onto the rookie list or do they have to go onto the primary list?

Primary list only. Rookies have to go through the rookie draft.

It doesn't help that the jnr administration is completely incompetent.

Absolutely no information dissemination and if you ask a question often the answer is "well that's how we have always done it".

There is a significant growth in girls footy, which will plateau and a decline in male jnr participation. Their strategic plan is "we hope they come back". It's a complete cluster f@$#.

There is talk of a high performance centre going into Hobart but chances are this goes to North Hobart or Clarence, which will lead to these sides dominating even more. Clarence in the boys won every youth age group bar one. (and that was a huge upset).

The amount of cronyism and nepotism in rep team selection is disgraceful. In one of my kids age groups the team that finished fifth got more kids selected in the rep squad than the teams that finished 2, 3, 4, 6, 7 and 8th put together. The team that lost the grand final got no players selected.

So jnr level is all over the place, the TSL is barely alive with the same couple of teams making the grand final for the last few years. There is a huge divide between north and south.

It will be interesting to see if the Devils sides at under 18 level are competitive. The VFL side needs to develop kids but still needs some good level players to hold it together.

Adrian Fletcher was a big failure and has been moved on from the Devils job. I don't know if it will work here, they need to fix the jnr admin first and north seems a lot more organised than south.

Further to my other post I am hearing Josh Green is coming back for a role with Clarence and the Devils

I think we need another ruckman .We are stuffed if Stef goes down .

Ballenden might get his chance next season. I'm excited about Ballenden, Fullarton and Skinner with one more preseason putting pressure on Stef, BigO and McStay.
