But have you seen the photos? the change in shape is unbelievable
Yeh they look in great shape. My point is I seriously can’t remember anyone here ever gushing over Hawthorn players conditioning before. They were obviously in great shape but I think it’s a classic case of people getting caught up in the hype.
Would I prefer anyone over Russell? No, but I don’t expect him to work miracles.

Maybe a combination of factors at play including: serious competition for spots going on + the kids are a year older + maybe just maybe Russell is getting more buy in than previous fitness blokes. Both Walsh ( especially) and Stocker look pretty good for first pre-season players - pressure is on to perform.

We will continue to probably see really good progress in the under 23 years olds because they are naturally growing into their bodies. The older blokes I’ve never seen in better shape I guess for them though it’s more about injury prevention and prolonging their careers.
I think players like Murph or Kruezer he should be extremely important for. Gov is another one who he will be somewhat defined by at Carlton. Possibly Kennedy too

I can recall Murphy not participating in a lot of training and just doing his own thing a couple of years ago - I dont think that kinda stuff is 'on' anymore. Wouldn't surprise me one iota if Simpson/Murphy/Kreuzer haven't got a huge lift seeing the signings last year - second wind type stuff, Ed Curnow pretty much suggested that everyone was really excited. Cripp's interview recently suggested that there were =days after games last year when he asked himself what was he doing ...he said he was sick of losing games...

Looks to me that the players are doing everything they can to get physically ready for 2019 - would be more than just Cripps sick of being ragdolled...SOS is smart enough to use a competitive filter when it comes to picks - can't think of any shirkers he has drafted. Kennedy has mongrel written all over him and McGovern / Harry are no slouchws in that department either.

Murph must be licking his chops thinking about Cripps/Kennedy/Ed /Setterfield/Dow/Walsh/SPS/Fisher/LoB combination of size / smarts and pace - he has never really had that kinda of depth at Carlton - pretty much JuddMurphy and whoever for his whole career ( Gibbs played mostly HBF remember) ...

Richmond are going to be a great test of midfield in round one.

It is a new Club in many ways for Murph - in a good way I'd guess.

Sorry to post here but it’s a busy thread and I’m getting p’d off. Have booked flight for the port game round two but can’t for the life of me find how to get tickets. Can someone please point me in the right direction ?
Cheers

I think Hindsight is in operation here. The dominance of the Hawks was in large part due to the continuity of their playing group, and a big part of that is attributed to the fitness management. Keep the players on the park >> you get get continuity and all that flows from it. The ability to strategically rest older players allowed them to be cherry ripe for the finals. The ability to have their players psychologically well balanced and motivated was also another factor and they all can be attributed to in a large part the fitness team of AR and co.
Like any dominant side, the other teams look to emulate them. And I believe that is where the "hype"might apply. he is the best of the fitness guys and so he is overhyped. But i dont think that the change in our fitness approach is overhyped- it seems night and day. We have less bulk and are much leaner. Of course it remains to be seen whether this translates into results- it doesnt seem long ago when we were complaining about our players being too small and being rag dolled by the other players . So there was an obvious rationale for us to have bulked up.
What seem to be happening though is that the programs seem to be individually tailored for each player , depending on their strengths and weaknesses.

Fisher is the only real quality player in that group.

We may get away with one of the others when the wheels are turning, but I fear we'd soon find out that two or more of the others in the same team together, may start to weigh us down.
Fasolo does though have a stand-alone position he can make his own and actually kick some goals.....Polson & Gibbons though? Not so sure.

Fact is, we don't have one genuine small crumbing forward. Defence is good. Attack is better.

I hope someone can bob up and become that player. Polson is still real young and has had his development stalled by injuries but he's coming into a good age and he's had a good preseason. Gibbons I would imagine spent a lot of his time playing midfield and probably getting tagged in the VFL. How getting his skills and fitness up to AFL standard and playing more forward and not getting tagged in the midfield affects him is yet to be seen. He looks a good crumber from his highlights. We have the luxury of playing Fisher forward a lot more too, this should up his output as a forward and he's a good crumber of the ball. Fasolo is a genuine goal kicker but his forward pressure could be a defining aspect of his game.

I don't know about not having a genuine small crumbing forward. I think we're going to have to wait and see about that. Things should be different up forward and there are some players who need to be given a chance before determining what they can and can't do.

There have been some pretty good small forwards come from the VFL and from nothing picks in recent years and ones who have won premierships. Small forwards don't really need to be stars or big goal kickers either, they just need to kick one or two a game and apply heaps of pressure and some to contribute in the midfield. If your small forwards do that and work well as a team you have something really good going.

The story is far from told I believe.
