2020 Draft and Trades Thread

I wonder which player we'd be more likely to draft out of Aiden Fyfe and Max Pescud. I suspect Dew would prefer a quick runner like Pescud who also offers the added bonus of being a very strong contested mark. Fyfe played predominantly as a halfback this year and when I read about his strengths it reminds me of we already have with Budarick. Having said that, with Hanley and Harbrow's careers coming to an end it may be a good idea to replenish the halfback stocks with a player like Fyfe.

Side note: Pescud comes from an interesting background. His grandfather (and namesake) was a famous boxing trainer in the 60s, 70s and 80s and Max's father is also a boxing trainer. I can only assume this means Max has stepped in the ring before and has a bit of mongrel in him. We could definitely use a player with some mongrel.

Fyfe was named one of the best players in the losing GF, also for a few times this year. Believe he also performed well in the academy series. Pescud I think is highly rated by draft watchers.

Not sure if Pescud played any QAFL games, but played in the academy series also.

This seems to be one year that there is a fair few decent academy prospects. Definitely makes it tough in deciding.

Could trade out Sexton for a early-mid second Rd pick. Or a future pick.

i know sexton is a QLD boy but will be 27 by the time the season starts and is his prime now and has value.
For all we know Dew might not play him next year due to his defensive efforts..

And pick up Gore with the free hit.

No.

i throughly enjoyed reading your comment and reasons why.

considering Sexton got dropped twice maybe 3 times last year?

yet all you have to reply is

No?

could easily be sitting next to Fiorini Wright and Brodie in the stands next year..

who knows what Dew has planned

Personally, I think it would be terrible to even think about trading Sexton. One of the mature bodies, he entered his prime, a leader, committed. He is a scoring thread and scored most goals/average after King. You can see he organizes the forward line in huddles. Every opposition targets him thus creating space for Rankine, Ainsworth and others. Yes, I would like him to get better in aerial one-one contests. He needed a 'reset' according to Dew when explaining his omission for 2 games.

To let Sexton go and pick up Gore with a free hit is even more shocking idea for me. To get even younger by replacing a mature and valuable player with another kid who will probably not make it is a big no from me too.

Why trade out Sexton? We don't need more picks or young kids. We need mature players around the kids and that's what Sexton is. Well liked bloke around the club as well would be a terrible loss

Depth isn’t a bad thing.
There’s no guarantee we’ll have another injury free season

Tom Morris today
At Gold Coast, Will Brodie looks more likely to stay than Peter Wright. The Suns are open to offers on either, but privately believe Wright will attract more attention in the trade period than Brodie. Both are contracted for another two seasons.

The Suns are shopping their Pick 5 around to rival clubs after several seasons of bringing elite young talent through the door.

Sexton is everything written about above.

But say we could trade Sexton for Devon smith?
Or similar is it worth it?
And I know Smith had a rough year at Essendon.. don’t blame him.

If Dew is planning on playing him.. that’s great.

But if Dew is looking for someone to replace sexton due to his lack of defensive effort.

No reason to keep him here just because he is a 27yr old mature body playing NEAFL

The club should never of let it get to the position of having Fiorini Wright and Brodie all on long term well paid contracts if Dew was thinking I won’t be playing them..
They were worth value.. now seem to be worth nothing after not being seen in 2020

the above are not depth players.
Would easily command a top 18 spot on the right teams.

look how quickly we were to dump Lyons. Only for him to have a better year then all our mids the following year.

Wasn't worth a response further than that, in my opinion.

If Brodie and Wright are so good why is there no interest in them? We overrate our players so badly

2 years left are hardly long-term contracts. Well paid contracts? How do you know? Cameron claimed that all recent contracts are reasonable unlike in the past. Only 2 weeks ago Morris was talking about SUNS having a minimal space under salary cap. Now we are ready to spend big money on an elite player.

No injuries means somebody had to sit out. Players had all pre-season to impress. Good to have a depth. Yes, we could discuss if we should rotate more players or not during 2020. Personally, I would. Scratch matches were not great to prove players form. Was putting more games into young core and building synergy more important?

Sexton will not be playing in a reserve because he was dropped for 2 games. He is one of our better players and I am pretty sure Dew knows it. It does not hurt to get a kick up the backside.

Dew did play Fiorini and he was disappointing in those games. Really disappointing. It looks like Fiorini wants to fight for the spot which is great. A full pre-season compared to last year groin surgery could make a difference.

For what is worth, at the moment Fiorini and Brodie are behind our current inside midfielders. Day is also ahead of Wright due to his contest, pressure. They all can make a case in the upcoming pre-season, and then playing in a reserve competition. I also doubt we will have such a good run with injuries again.

Devon Smith knees are a big worry. A lot of people think he is limited due to them now and has not much left. So to trade Sexton for Smith I say no.

We got so many picks and concessions recently and ongoing that even if we get nothing for Brodie, Wright it does not affect us at all. Honestly, I don't know what we will do with picks 24 and 35 this year unless we trade them for some role players or trade them for future picks. If they leave we do accumulate extra cap space for next couple of years to chase 1-2 elite talents and re-sign our stars core. We just can't have 22 first round picks making our team. We will be soon in GWS situation. Every year 1-3 talents will have to leave. We do need role players on less salaries besides stars.

Personally, I am tired of Lyons story. Check out his numbers with SUNS. In 2017, he played along Ablett, had better numbers than this year and how did SUNS go that year or in 2018 for that matter? He was often lazy and gave up on many occasions when we were losing badly in 2018. Now on a 3rd chance he learned from it and works hard. Lions were at different stage of development and were a better fit for him. Interestingly, not a lot of difference in numbers between him and Greenwood this year. Lyons has 4 more disposals, better marks but Greenwood has better tackles and contested possessions numbers. I know who I prefer with regard to being around a young re-building team.
It's actually interesting to read his latest interview. According to Cameron Lyons's manager told SUNS that there was no interest in him during trade period (SUNS told Lyons during exit interview that they are happy for him to explore a trade) but he did have 2 year offer on the table from Lions. It was only when Lions added 3rd year he conveniently asked for the release after the trade period otherwise he would stay with SUNS.

Can you summarise this essay for us simpletons

I wonder if we could regain our interest in Brad crouch. If adelaide were keen on wright or brodie we could give them away for basically nothing if they took on their salaries and in return give crouch a contract big enough to land the crows pick 2. I like the idea of treloar/ merrett over crouch but with crouch we keep our pick 5 on top of a very good player

So there is some shit talk on our board about brayden fiorini and links to WCE on SEN radio this morning .

Probably just BS rumours but ..

Why is he out of favour atm ?

Can't see anywhere that he has been injured and looks to have dropped off a cliff form wise this year .

Just kinda pushed out because of the midfield, and didn't do well down back. He is an inside mid. But I haven't heard any speculation. If he were to leave, I doubt it would be to WA. He is from victoria.

Would be honestly surprised if Fiorini left given his attitude this year.

Would be even more surprised if he left to a club stacked with a better midfield than ours in the Eagles, so very much doubt that's happening. Would just be a poor decision on his part IMO.

For some reason I thought he was a winger not an inside mid .
Thanks for the info .
