Pretty standard Collingwood fixture with double ups against 3 top 6 teams to be expected. The only gripe I have is the two Marvel home games against tenants.

I’m getting a serious vibe that this is to act as a piece offering to Geelong for not getting us, and finals, at Skilled. If given the option of 10 MCG home games and 1 at Marvel plus a trip down the highway would that be preferable? I’d personally take it.

Haven't further looked into it but what's this shit Tom Brownes reporting that Pies vs Ess ANZAC day games been bumped to twighlight in favour of Hawks vs WC in Hobart shit?

“Collingwood and Essendon will be a twilight that day because I can tell you this morning that Hawthorn will play West Coast,” Browne said.

“Hawthorn’s first game of the season in Launceston at about one o’clock on Anzac Day, that will lead in to the Collingwood and Essendon game… there could be [another interstate game that night as well].”

I'm happy to play at Kardinia Park if we get all 11 home games at our actual home ground.

Has anyone ever asked a question at the end of year forums about the Docklands situation? Is there any form of agreement between ourselves and Docklands about having to play 2 home games there every year? Is it part of the 14 games at the G agreement? Or is it simply at the AFL's whim?

I'm sure there is a deal between us and Docklands but IIRC it only relates to the financial arrangements when we are scheduled to play home games there and not stipulating that we must play there. But I would like to know for sure.

Tom Browne's been wrong before, we'll just have to wait until they release the fixture to find out. Any day now...

Do I detect a hint of sarcasm?

''I haven't further looked into it'', suggests I have not kept up or looked into ANY fixture news outside that post by Browne.

Came here looking for it rather then doing digging. Generally don't even bother looking at the fixture anymore unless I read it on here.

It's all right. Just a bit of fun at the end of a long work week. :thumbsu:

The AFL know that it’s a showpiece round so they want as many eyeballs for as long as possible without games clashing. Browne’s take on that is just tabloid journalism.

There’s definitely contracts in place that require us to play 14 at the G, but now the AFL own Marvel I doubt there’s any reason for us to play home games there other than to keep the peace.

Hard to lose credibility if you don’t have any

Posted this on the Carlton board but thought I would share with Magpies .... the fixture is what it is but my only complaint is the lack of understanding of history by having Carlton v Collingwood as an early Sunday game , surely should be on a Saturday afternoon marquee game ....

2 Collingwood games at Marvel makes the AFL more money than the 14 at the G. If the AFL has their way, wed play every game at Marvel.

No.

I’m with the AFL. Until Carlton get their shit together that’s the slot the game deserves. In the modern footy landscape a team with 2 winning seasons in the past 18 years doesn’t warrant decent fixturing.

The matches between the two clubs have only been relevant for a very brief period (09-11) since the 1980’s so realistically most people under the age of 30 only find the rivalry relevant because their parents do...

Edit: our rivalry with GWS is now more relevant than v Carlton, IMO. Two massive finals back to back, we’ve poached players from them, Dave Matthews taking a crack at Chrisso, Ed and anyone else he can etc.

Yeah it's odd that the fixture seems to ignore the Collingwood Carlton rivalry, yet is trying to keep the Melbourne rivalry alive with Queen's bday, when seriously re-igniting that rivalry seems impossible due to Melbourne's supporter base. But perhaps that's the reason - we need Queen's Birthday as a nod to history, but we just need Carlton to return to winning footy games, becasue that rivalry will always be there - simmering away, awaiting the two teams to be decent at the same time.

Everybody wants to play Collingwood in the good timeslots. Carlton dont get any special rights.

ANZAC Day is on a Saturday. Nothing sinister in it, they are just trying to fit more games in as per a usual Saturday draw.

It’s worth noting, barring injury and suspension Scott Pendlebury will equal Tony Shaw’s club games record (313) in Round 12 against Melbourne. He will then pass it after the bye in Round 14 against Sydney at the SCG.

Would have been to have it as a home game. (We have Adelaide and Brisbane the following two weeks as home game. Perhaps we may ‘rest’ him for one). That way he could pass the record in front of a home crowd.

Suspension lol.

It’s amazing how few 300 game players our club has had in its long proud history. There’s at least 50 players above Shaw on that list and none of them played for Collingwood ( except D Cloke who played at two clubs)

Tony Shaw is a very worthy club record holder , but after 30 or so years it’s about time to pass the baton.

It will be interesting to see how much longer Pendlebury can play for. If I had to guess I’d say he’s still got three seasons in him. Maybe Sidebottom will pass him, who knows.

Incidentally Heater will pass Uncle Tony early next season.

I believe this is contractual, Marvel Stadium have to hold a certain number of games between Victorian clubs. Likewise interstate clubs lobby to play at the MCG for finals experience.

It's contractual that we play 2 games at Marvel, not who we play. Was part of the deal when we signed on with the MCG as our home ground.

The Marvel games were set to appease the then owners of the Docklands stadium as part of our agreement to have the MCG as our home ground rather than follow the sheep to Docklands. As I recall, it only sets the quantum of home games we play there, not the opponents, which is why there's so much disquiet about us consistently playing tenants in these games. Do any other non-tenant teams play home games there against tenants?

We’ve had 17 such games since it opened.

Richmond have had 13, Melbourne 6, Hawthorn 4.

Melbourne and Hawthorn though obviously have interstate home games instead.

We are going to play two or three games at marvel regardless. The colour of the shorts doesn’t really matter.

We get the benefit of being able to play a large number of “ away games” at the mcg. It amounts to the same thing.

Given we play GC at the MCG there would be no net change in the number of games at either venue if NM or StK were switched so that we play GC at Marvel, NM or StK at the MCG. It would give us a lot stronger home ground advantage though.

Even GC is enttitled to an occasional game at the MCG.
Bugger GC I support Collingwood and want what's best for our club. That said GC do play Melbourne at the MCG in R15, which means they play two games at the MCG in 2020 and just the one at Marvel (Essendon). WB (Ballarat) and NM (Hobart) says everything needed about their drawing capacity, our game against GC should be at Marvel.

The other game I'd consider more suited to Marvel is Port. Port's other games hosted by Melbourne clubs are NM (Marvel), Melbourne (MCG), Hawthorn (Launceston), StKilda (China), Richmond (Marvel) and WB (Ballarat). Again our game at the MCG looks the odd one out.

Look at the tigs as a comparison; games at Marvel:

2018 (3 games) - NM away R8, Sydney home R15, St Kilda away R18
2019 (4 games) - Sydney home R5, WB away R7, NM away R11 and St Kilda away R15
2020 (2 games) - St Kilda away R3, Port home R16

Over those 3 years we've given up a home game to a tenant club on four occasions, the tigs not once. Seemingly the tigs aren't tied to contractual obligations around who they play at Marvel. At best we maybe tied to giving away one home game to a tenant club per year, but two is unlikely considering the fixture in previous years. If there's a contract in place around who we play at Marvel it's something we need to stop asap, if there's not the club needs to put their foot down and stop being the AFL's cash cow.
