Ely Smith is another who could play that inside brute role. Dude is a beast

He might be big, but he hasn’t got a run yet and starting to think there must be a reason for this. Devon (straight out of the draft, CEY (with all his deficiencies) geez even Mathieson have all got runs in front of Ely. Given the shortcomings of the last two and inexperience of Devon there has to be something significant keeping Smith out.

I think Smith was always seen as a project midfielder as he was likely going to need a year or so to get AFL ready. I thought his first half of neafl last year was fairly bad even for that level, but really started to look good after he came back from an injury. It's a shame we can't watch him play this year, but my guess is he and Dev will probably be pushing for spots next year. You'd assume Dev is ahead of him based off the very little information we've got about reserves games and see 2021 as a make or break year for Smith. Has the tools though, it's just a matter of application and probably the mental side of the game clicking.

I have zero insight into the club, but was starting to wonder about that too. It is starting to smell a bit like a Wearden "here's all the reasons he could have an unreached high ceiling" optimistic shot by the club that might have missed.

There will be list cuts at the end of the season & it will be fascinating who (among the fringe players) stays & who goes. Ely has some short comings in his game but also has a good upside should the sort out his short comings. Some things like lack of pace are not so easy to improve on (if ever) however I do believe the ones Ely have to work on can be improved on with hard work and dedication. Fingers crossed he gets there.

Didn't Ely have good pace in his junior football?

looked like had a good burst of pace but a poor top speed.

Ah yes, that was it. I feel like once Zorko retires, we're going to need someone to replace his burst from stoppages. Starc and Smith seem to have the most likely attributes to do so outside of Bailey.

Ely is contracted for another two years, so he’ll be given every chance to succeed.

At the draft combine he tested well for speed (but not in the top group), and very well for the vertical jump tests.

But what was noted by those who watched him a lot, was that he doesn’t use his speed in matches. He was very much a power, burst player from contests, then gives to ball off.

i will make it clear do not like what he brought to the team.i did not want him at the club to begin with.

You didn’t answer my question though. Who is hungrier that plays the same role? What didn’t you like about him being added to the team? Stop with the vague criticism and just say you don’t like the guy at this point.

He could be a late bloomer ? Thats why i am glad the lions ,from what i heard are pushing for a national reserves comp.i have wanted that all along. to test our players they have to be tested by the best possible opponents hence that is why i was never a fan of the neafl comp.

My understanding is that not all of his issues have been naturally occurring.

He is one I would be going nowhere near.

I agree, moving to WA and Freo is as close to him being back in his happy place. If Freo are not extending him and in return McCarthy is walking away asap, that'll be the end of him at AFL level.

When choosing between dev and CEY ,i believe youth is the way to go so dev is someone i would pick, rather than Cam Ellis-Yolmen.You cannot judge Dev by one game.i love his attitude and in my view young players deserve a chance and for the club most importantly to know if they have what it takes /potential to make it long term.Does that answer your question. So it is Dev.Why ?- i never wanted CEY to begin with.just does not appeal or excite me as a player. Seems too laid back for me, comes across as a player with no real sense of urgency and soft when i compare him, with the likes of zorko, cam rayner, robbo, answerth, zac b,who are prepared to chase down and are not be afraid to throw some weight around. Lions wanted him as a big bodied mid. He may look big but in my own personal opinion, he does not play big and yet the ones i have mentioned above have done that and more.So more rotations through the midfield. So let dev have a chance and learn and grow into that roll from the likes of neale, zorko, robbo etc when the opportunity a raises. PS I like players who are skillful ,fast make things happen and play with flair.Example of players i like from other teams ,have been a fan of shai bolton, from his draft year ,i wanted lions to draft him actually, Rory Laird, essendon conor mckenna, mcdonald tipungwuti, izak r to name a few.

I love what Ely Smith has shown so far. You've only got to look at him to see it could take a little time to adjust to higher tempo games but to me he seems to have time once he has ball in hand. Powerful and strong. You have to put the effort into guys like that.

great post,love it,spot on..well said

I was not a fan of CEY and still aren't a big fan but I think it is unfair to say he does not play as a big body or throw it around. For me that is one of the things he does actually do. On the negatives he is slow and does not put much pressure on when the ball is not within grasping distance. When he gets the ball in a contest he is okay but is not particularly creative with it and does not have much hurt factor. He has not gotten a lot of time onball this year and when he has he has not been as effective as I thought he would be. On the positives he has shown an ability to take a mark in the forward line and would have to be close to our best set shot for goal. That is certainly needed. Personally he is not someone I would have chased but he is an okay option for someone in that 19-25 area of the list. He can come in and be depended to do a job and that is important for a coach. It is very easy to see someone jumping up to replace him though given his low ceiling.

Dev will get a chance but for me playing him in the same forward with limited time in the midfield is not going to help him succeed. When he gets a chance I think it has to come with quite a lot of time onball because that is where his strength is and where he is likely to help.

If you wanted someone with explosiveness and X factor up forward who could potentially come into the midfield and give us some Bolton like plays then I would be going with Coleman. He is a quality user of the ball, knows where the goals are and gives good defensive pressure when we don't have the ball. I am hoping we see him soon.

I have Laird in a dynasty league and watch him closely and he has been a disappointment this year since moving onball. He is light and does not really provide anything in the contest and gets caught up in traffic too much. He was much better in the link role between the backs and the mids that he has played for the last several years. McKenna is another that I have watched a fair bit over the years and whilst he can give a highlight or two he drifts out of games for too long. This year his move forward has so far netted 1 goal and 0 behinds so it is fair to say it has not been a raging success. Tippa I like despite him having a down year and Rankine has looked very exciting so far.

Got a name?

Looking at the list on the AFL site, apart from our own, there’s no one I’d consider.

Unless we’re dipping back in to the Hawthorn well, then Isaac Smith is a maybe.

Wasn’t referring to anyone in particular. Just something I think we will be looking at.

Stratton and Smith would be the Hawthorn link and something I still think we will look at.

Jesse Hogan thread has popped up on the trading board. Looks like Freo are trying him as defender now.

Might come cheap even.. I wonder what if....

in defense of laird, we must put the situation he is in at the crows ,into context. Something there is massively effecting morale and if adelaide were to focus on a rebuilding with youth, laird may be gettable and with the lions culture the way it is [ far superior to that of Adelaides, light years ahead in fact] at the moment I truly believe laird would thrive ‘he was much better in the link role between the backs and the mids that he has played for the last several years.’ And thats exactly what i am talking about.

in terms of Mckenna , i would rate his kicking very good to elite and only see his position as A HBF. I would rate him,[ again my own personal opinion ]as an impact player.I don’t mind him drifting in and out of games but it is when he drifts in, ( sort of like a lincoln m) he makes things count.some of the games i have seen him play and watched his kicking to a team mate . i go wow i love this guy.

i would love to see coleman get a go this weekend.

in terms of CEY ,in comparison to the lions players I mentioned I just don‘t think he throws it around as they do. They seem to do it far better and more consistently than CEY. However i respect your view is different.

then there is Izak ,if he keeps his performances up like this [to use a metaphor, he will be Like a fine wine that just keeps getting better with age]. only early In his career i know ,but i truly believe I am watching the beginnings of a super ,superstar.

Been thinking about Key Forward.. I think McStay does his job Hipwood is up and down.
Although if we get someone else in Cox, Casboult, Brown etc are they a step up on what we have?
Brown seems out of sorts and Cox lost his spot to someone else.
If we played them as Fagan seems to want to with new recruits then we pushing Hipwood or McStay into the 2's. Or Big O if Martin plays.
I say a foil for Charlie is needed more.. Someone who leads up and marks. Is Gunston/Breust available from the hawks?
Someone like J Cameron be more a focal point although not sure I want him :)

I still think Ruck is where we need someone.. Not sure Archie going to make it
Ballenden and Skinner more pinch hitters then rucks.
Big O could take #1 so who else do we go Nankervis maybe? Chol as a forward who can ruck. You think Tigers get rid of one of them.

Apart from that an A grade mid I not say no to :)

Casboult has some of the best hands, would take 100%

If we take Casboult who do we drop Hipwood, McStay or Second ruck. Not sure Fagan will go one ruck
He played 135 games for 146 goals at 1.08 avg
Hipwood 87 games for 130 for 1.49 avg
McStay 113 games for 82. Although take out a couple of seasons in defence. he be around 1 goal a game when playing forward.
Oscar 49 games for 29 goals..59 avg

Compare that with the top goal kickers all over 2 a game average
Hawkins 268 games 584 goals at 2.18
J Cameron 165 games 421 goals at 2.55
Kennedy 254 games 638 goals at 2.51
Riewoldt 274 games 649 goals at 2.37

Different story if we went for Cameron
Even Ben Brown who looks not the same avgs over 2
130 games 287 2.2 av
If you took Brown would you drop hipwood.

No need to drop anyone, Casboult plays as the 2nd ruck to O (I'm assuming Stef retires), Casboult can also play KPD if needed. Considering his age he'd be good for a couple of years while Hippy continues to develop and we search for another mature ruck as backup/depth for O.
