Only 46,051 at the MCG tonight.
So if it was a 50,000 "sellout" as the AFL were spruking where were the missing 4000?Or wasn't it a sellout!
Its hard to believe that 4000 people would pay to attend and not bother to turn up.

Did they say it was a sell out? I suspect it wasn't

The majority didn't. AFL members no, MCC I could be wrong but only Ticketek booking fee. Home members no. So the away members allowed in that 3000 to the dogs were they 16 game membership holders? whereby only pay for the upgrade to a seat.
Nonetheless, that's a lot of people deciding to not go when the game was declared a sell-out.

From the TV, looked like most of the empty seats were in the Ponsford and MCC stands up the top deck. Did GA and MCC sell out?

lol

You know not every member can attend every game right?
But they AFL/MCC Members had to have a ticket to get in not just a walk up as they usually do - so why bother to get a ticket if you know you are not going? 4000 is a huge amount of no shows in a fully ticketed 50,000 crowd!

Ratings Metro Last night AFL FTA #5 show 580,000 NRL FTA #12 show 345,000

970K FTA plus Foxtel Box which is a bit below par for a round 1 friday night game that wasn't a blow out

NRL got 761K which you'd think is really disappointing given it's a round 2 broncos derby game

Could be far worse though. Pippen94 's WSW got 11K on a Friday night. That's the ratings by the way....only 6K at the game. These people call the Giants the "short people" 🤣🤣🤣

I really don't think it was sold out. I checked just before the game and I could still by nose bleed seats in groups of 6.

It was free to get a ticket for AFL members and for many types of club members and MCC. Not hard to imagine people securing a ticket on the chance of being able to go who were then unable to for various reasons.

I don't know the split of who didn't show up, but given roughly 25k were club members, if 85% of them showed up then there's your 4k right there. And an 85% showup rate is actually pretty high.

As an indication, have a look at Optus stadium crowds for West Coast pre-covid. Pretty much every game is sold out, yet most crowds are in the low-mid 50s. Why? Because not every member shows up, and there are various reasons why.

If there were 35k there last night, then you might have a point. But 4k out of 50k? Jeez dude, find something better to argue about.

Interesting thing about last night's ratings is the 47k in Brisbane. Not a massive number on it's own, but compared to games a couple of years ago that's huge. Usually that number for FNF is low 20s. Especially given it was up against the NRL Queensland derby. It wasn't that much short of the numbers in Adelaide and Perth (although TBF the game started at 4:30 Perth time so isn't going to rate well).

Be interesting to see if those numbers keep up as the season goes on.

It wasn’t officially sold out. There were still some available MCC reserve and the public section of the Ponsford Stand appeared also below capacity.

Ive got a feeling crowds in 2021 could be below expectation generally if people continue to be required to pre book seats early. There’s thousands of walk ups that often decide to go at short notice that still may stay away this year. Then some of our older supporters may still be uncomfortable attending large gatherings. Until pre booking is not required, overall attendances will likely disappoint if comparing to pre COVID.

Today's Melbourne V Fremantle crowd isn’t restricted by capacity. However this would’ve drawn close to 30,000 today as their opening round fixture without pre booking procedures.

Last nights crowd similarly disappointed without the freedom of thousands simply turning up.

They will also be below because a significant minority of regulars will be vulnerable (or have vulnerable loved ones) and will avoiding going until they get vaccinations

21,365 at the G for Melbourne vs Freo. Pretty disappointing to be honest.
Feel sorry for any Essendon or Hawk member who missed out on seats. No reason the games couldn't have been swapped.

I know it's your ground Melbourne, but if Geelong finals get moved up the highway due to crowds, then your h+a games should be moved too.

I believe that tonight’s Brisbane Vs Swans game is the first AFL match since Covid started that will have a 100% Capacity Crowd allowed in (would still only expect 30,000 though)!

With Storms forecasted 30k in Brisbane would be a pretty good result

yes they did, sell out for rich v carl, pies v dogs and ess v hawks
Lol. Eagles at Subi, every game was a sellout.

Every. Single. Game.

But it often had as many as 10-15% of seats empty. More if it was a s**t game.

So no, whatever conspiracy your hinting at. Bollocks.
