Owies is a little improvement away from being a pretty good player. If he improves his crumbing game and his goal kicking accuracy from outside 30m then he's going to bring a lot to the team. Really excited about Durdin and Honey. Genuine pace and a will to hunt the man as well as a knack of kicking a few goals. Our forward line game plan needs a touch-up, if we create a more defensive forward setup and we're hard, quick and physical at ground level we are going to build something pretty good.
Agree and it’s a positive that they’ll be competing for the position of let’s say goal sneak.2022 will let us whom of the three can remain.

I have all 3 in my side for 2022, I think they fit. Owies was used a bit high up the field at times, I wonder if he could also play other positions. You wouldn't move him on without seeing whether he can offer anything on the ball or in defence. He's a skilful player who competes pretty strongly and IMO that's already a lot to offer. Played a lot of basketball and that can help a players spacial and awareness in terms of midfield play. Will be interesting to see how we go with these guys as more a permanent fixture for us.

Yep. Noted yesterday in the H/S that Robbo had him as 7th best player in the comp at the start of this year. Clearly not an infallible judge but puts a bit of perspective on that "horrible for the last 2 years" group mindset.
Cripps has been very unfairly maligned.

In 2020 he finished 1st for centre clearances, and 3rd for overall clearances. He was well down on his AFLPA MVP year of 2019, however he was still one of the best clearance mids in the comp.

His 2021 was his first actual struggle year, still he kicked more goals than Walsh and averaged over 23 disposals per game.

IMO Honey is better and you cant have too many of same type and definitely cant have both playing at same time. Owies was good at times but Honey much more upside. Has more pace , more tricks, stronger overhead AND A MUCH BETTER MORE PENETRATING KICK.
Owies probably has him for tackling pressure.

I would have thought Big H was our most improved ???
Honey seems to play more like a medium forward than a small forward. I'm pretty sure he's solid overhead and really strong for his size. I am excited by what he can bring to the team.

That top 3 mids of Cripps, Walsh, Cerra just looks so good now. Get Cripps injury-free and he's still an elite midfielder of the league.

Walsh and Cerra still improving.

I think Hewett too will help take a lot of heat off Cripps.

Don't see any reason why Cripps can't get back to his best - or better!

2nd half of 2020 he was 2nd in the league for goals (behind Hawkins) and 1st in the league for contested marks. Lack of continuity meant he only looked good in patches.

Him, Owies, Walsh, JSOS and Kennedy were probably our biggest improvers this year. Could possibly add Stocker and Honey onto that list. Lots of positive signs.

I've often thought he might be the BP we lack.

Well, assuming Stocker moves into the middle...

IMO it's not our job to take the heat off Cripps, it's Cripps go to be out there in the thick of it and highly involved in the game, if he's not he's not worth his spot in the side. Our players just all need to pull their weight and contribute. Play structured footy and go as hard as you can when it's your turn to go. Attack and defend as a team. If one player is more involved than others then so be it. Cripps' role in the team is a go hard or go home style of game where he is in everything and when he draws attention then that's the opportunity for others to sneak under the guard. Not saying we use Cripps all the time at stoppages, we need to be team orientated with this but he needs to be highly involved in our games. Same as Bont, Oliver, Petracca, Wines are for their teams.

I also liked what little I saw of Durdin as well . :thumbsu:

What do you all think? Any chance we are still going to trade for a ruck or is Lewis Young our answer to that? I would have thought he was more a defender.

Are we really going into the season with only TDK, Pittonet and Mirkov?
Agree. Clear weakness that needs to be addressed.

Pittonet shouldn't even be on that list, he's horrible. Add to that the fact Casboult is no longer there.

Did having to play Silvagni in the ruck not ring enough alarm bells that the ruck is a problem? We seem to be putting all our eggs in the basket of a raw, injury-prone young ruckman, in a very key post on the field

I'd be snapping up Toby Conway with 25.

I like what we have been able to achieve so far this offseason. It seems the front of house is in order and our playing list is taking shape.

Where to from here?

Our list sits at 34-7-1, so we must make at least 2 delistings for the minimum draft pick requirements.

Out of Contract players:

O'Brien (senior) - rumoured to have re-signed, no brainer to get a one year deal for mine.

Owies (cat b rookie) - no brainer additional year on cat b rookie list. Bonus list player.

Boyd (cat a rookie) - liked what I saw in his limited VFL appearances. Has good pace and foot skills, can be what we need as that lockdown small defender. Mature at 23, and I think he has what it takes to be a surprise packet. List need - 1 year rookie deal.

McDonald (cat a rookie) - Austin seemed to suggest McDonald is part of our 2022 plans in his trade radio interview. Provides good KPP & break glass ruck depth when not injured - 1 year rookie deal.

Parks (cat a rookie) - had a decent first season, he is tenacious, hits hard, largely durable and seems very coachable. With Plowman, Kemp and the likely addition of Akuei as a cat b rookie (bonus) - there appears to be only 1 spot left for a medium defender on the list. One of Parks or Marchbank will need to go (regardless of if we land Akuei or not), the other will get a rookie list spot (i.e. Marchbank demotion). Marchbank contracted for 2022, however won't have played in almost 3 years. My call, Voss values durability and dependability, as noted in his first press conference - Marchbank paid out & delisted - Parks 1 year rookie deal.

Cottrell (cat a rookie) - endurance freak, has pace, is hard at it but is a terrible kick, makes poor decisions, lacks polish and footy IQ for the wing position. Part of me thinks he can make a great lockdown back pocket, but I think he will be exposed for defensive positioning and his kicking will be a bigger liabilty down there. If we're moving past players like Gibbo and Ramsay, Cottrell also has to go. Delist.

List now sits at 33-6-1.

Pick Trade with Brisbane

Carl - Pick #18, Pick #54, Bris fut 3rd
Bris - Pick #25, Pick #64, Carl fut 2nd

Rationale
Carlton move up the order to get the last Round 1 pick (Bris 2nd pick overall). Moving up 7 spots may be insignificant, but it secures a 1st rounder to satisfy the AFL rolling 4th rounder.
This means we are now able to trade one of our 2022 or 2023 firsts in the next two trade periods, once our 2 2019 selections fall out of the 4 year rolling period.
Brisbane are happy to slip back a few spots in order to secure a roughly 20 pick upgrade in 2022 when they have 2 quality academy players coming through.
Blues nab a minor late 10 pick upgrade.

List needs
- Key fwd/ruck (Casboult replacement)
- Developing key defender (2021 hole)
- Small forward (Betts/Murph/Gibbo replacement)
- Small defender (Docherty LTI)

Drafts

Pick #18 (#20) - Rhett Bazzo (or other kpd)
Pick #54 (#46) - small fwd or ruck/kpf
Rookie Promotion - Matt Kennedy

Rookie Pick #6 - Josh Cripps (ruck/kpf) or small fwd
Cat B Rookie - Dominic Akuei - NGA (med def/kpp utility)

Inactive List - Sam Docherty
SSP replacement - (lockdown small defender)

2022 Draft Picks
Carl 1st, Bris 3rd, Carl 4th & 5th

2022 List Breakdown
36 Senior
6(1) Cat A Rookie*
2 Cat B Rookie^
= 44(1) players

Next years draft hand is now flexible enough to target one more key acquisition - salary cap permitting.
Our ruck stocks are thin in AFL quality, I think Pitto is a long term back up, but he and TDK have both had injury issues.

Rowan Marshall is out of contract in 2022 at the Saints. He will be 26 end of next year and may be gettable if we perform and the Saints flounder.
Carl 2022 1st & 2023 2nd can form the base of a trade offering. We can now offer our 1st due to our earlier deal with Brisbane.

We should be in his ear right now.

Regardless of Cripps stats in 2020 and peoples opinions on how important each stat is, Cripps finished 9th in our B&F, thats not 9th having missed several games with injury, that’s 9th, playing the full season.

That shows, more than any stat, how far he has fallen the last two years, I’d also be surprised if he finishes top 5 this year.

So a club best and fairest shows more about how Cripps performed, than comparing Cripps to the best mids in the league?

IMO without getting into a deep and meaningful argument about the value of stats the way the coaches vote in a B&F is definitely the best gauge of a players performance.

Coaches intensely anaylse every players contribution and know intimately the value of every individuals performance given they essentially define player roles.

Yes it does.

The four coaches who give votes in the B&F, see every game, they analyse every game, they know what the player does, versus what they are asked to do, they can see the value each of these stats and possessions bring to the side.

Stats on their own are just numbers, they don’t show impact or intent, the B&F position, shows where/how the club rated his performances.

Correct, I'm not disagreeing with that. However every team's B&F consists of players from all sorts of positions, and this too is not a true reflection of how they performed that year.

I'll give Ed Curnow as an example. He finished 2nd in 2019 and 3rd in 2020. Despite him having almost as good of a year this season as those already gone, he will struggle to finish in our top 5 unlike the last 2 years. That's not because he was much worse than 2019/20, but simply because Walsh, Weiters, Jones and Harry have done just as well this year to poll more.

The same can be said about Cripps. The B&F is a great tool to gauge players performance, but just like some stats, they too can sometimes be misleading.

Ed was definitely worse this year
