Pies cap is still tight isn't it? Might be off loading another player on big $

There was talks of Maynard moving but things may have changed since McRae appointment.

interesting min $$
if you about to go from a club like Levi and no idea if he has anything else to fall back on.
$120k might be better and move to Brisbane for 2 years
then local footy.. As who knows if that play next year in vic anyway. No way you get any big $
Also a chance to play finals if you play well
Sometimes a change helps heaps

If not Casbolt.. I be happy to get someone with a mature body to play while Hippy out.
No idea if Hipwood back for 2022 anyway
VFL still effected next year if Melbourne still have Covid around

Unlikely we have the room to go for ladhams but another ruck on the market means another club might not go for whatever bargain buy we're after.

If we got Levi then we'd have 3 forwards/ rucks who can't do either roll well. Tom Fullarton isn't a good ruck, not a great mark , not a natural forward.....YET. Joe, Can't ruck, not a great mark, not a great kick. Levi, can ruck, can play forward, ok kick.
Thing is all three are not up to the roll as ruck/forward.

IMHO we play Andrews at FF, Payne plays in defence and takes the second ruck. Job done.
How do you possibly draw a line between Casboult can ruck but Daniher can’t? And somehow Casboult can kick and Daniher can’t? They are practically the same in both categories, in fact I’d argue Daniher is the better of the two for both. Daniher is up to the roll of ruck/forward, in fact he had one of the few highest averages of goals and hit outs for a ruck forward in the first half of the season before his role change. The trouble is, the Lions don’t want to waste Joe for that position. Payne will not play in defence as a 2nd ruck. No player in the competition does that as they want cohesion and consistency between their 7 backmen.

Agree, although Daniher isn’t a great pure ruck the way he can get around the ground is a nice point of difference and his field kicking isn’t too bad, takes bad options from time to time though. I don’t think his role change was due to wasting him there though, more due to needing to replace Hipwood inside forward 50. Definitely agree with not using a backman as a second ruck, would be a good way to upset chemistry in the backline.

I wonder if we have enough cap space for Sam Weideman from Melbourne
Age 24, 195 cm, 97 kg, 49 games, National draft 2015 pick 9

Just throwing it out there as a Forward/R. Not many choices out their at present
No real knowledge of how good/average/bad he is. Also have no idea what sort of money he would be looking at

OOC and suggestion on the main board that a 3rd rounder would get it done if he is not delisted beforehand
Only 5 games with 3 goals 4 behinds in 2021
13 games with 19 goals 8 behinds in 2020
In 2018/9 did a bit of forward/ruck work in the seniors
Apparently he plays mainly ruck in the twos according to some posters but he plays forward in the seniors
Melbourne is a hard team to get that best 22 spot.
There is a reason he is not in the Dees team.......he hasn't come on as expected.

I was photographing and following the TAC Cup quite closely at that time and thought he was a reach at pick 9 to be honest.

Did you watch his efforts this season?

His entire ruck strategy is to fake to jump, stay down, grab the ball and kick.

That's it. It worked once or twice but did you ever see him barge in, jump early, stand his ground, tackle hard, block for Neale and Lyons, drive his opponent into the ground, guard a mark .........I could go on. Joe is one of those players who thinks football occurs when he has the ball in his hands and he tries to do the most spectacular with it. His pressure is deplorable, his overhead marking is pretty poor, his goal kicking is pretty poor and his second efforts are the same. He is one of the most spectacular attempted marks I've ever seen.

Casboult has half the talent that Joe has but his ruckwork is way better and his overhead marking is the same. thing is you'll get no flashiness from Levi but you'll get someone who tries.

Personally I wouldn't have either of them.

Weidemann is a bit like Schache. All the tools but lacking the killer instinct

Weideman is not overly mobile and can't seem to stay in the game. Whether this is an endurance issue or mental or both not entirely sure. His ability to hit the scoreboard and defensive side is questionable. He is also limited in aiding in the ruck. I am not 100% sure what he has to offer us at this point in time.

We’re still paying Witherden to play at WestCoast say $350k that money would be handy it would allow Us to target someone like Gunston instead of Levi
I am trying to think of cap space that could be freed up at the end of next year.
witho - 350k?
Mitch - 400k?
Zorko reduced contract - 200k?
Cey - 400k?
Ely smith maybe save 50k
Theoretically a bit going out.
so how much is earmarked for improvers?
If it’s true we didn’t do an across the board cut like others, we shouldn’t need to increase pay by as much as others to make sure players stay.
So maybe room for one established player next year?
That said i think there is enough improvement within the group. Add in two first rounders this year plus one hopes Ashcroft and minimal retirements, and we seem well-placed to stay in the window for a while.
