That all makes sense, though I think you guys will live trade down with a couple of teams and match Ashcroft with more picks than that. You may also trade a couple of your F3's to help reduce the Fletcher deficit which knocks out more picks.

Most teams take in more spots than they intend to use as it gives them more flexibility. This year only three teams had the max 38 on their primary list and eleven only had 36 and extra rookies. If its similar this draft there'll be lots of passing.
Yeah, until the actual draft, who knows what things will look like, once the bid is made.

Live trading down potentially wipes out a couple of potential trade partners for those future 3rd rounders as well.

We can potentially trade two future 3rd round picks in to this years draft, and I would be eyeing off Hawthorn's picks, currently 50 & 52 for that deal.

But the most obvious team to trade with on draft night, to get a points boost from pick 34, would also be Hawthorn, trading 34 for their picks 48, 50 & 52. Then we can look at teams that might be willing to move a late 3rd round pick in to 2023. Collingwood with pick 51, Adelaide with pick 56, and GWS with pick 57 are the obvious teams that might be willing to trade out late 3rd round pick.

Current reports indicate that there will only be about 50 live picks taken in the draft, while the remaining list spots are likely to be rookie upgrades, DFAs, or actual rookies. That said, I’d expect the draft to start with virtually all of the first four rounds active as well as Melbourne, Port and Richmond’s fifth rounders (being the third of their minimum three picks) which leaves us with about 75 picks to start the draft.

Also note that “magic pudding picks” are arranged into rounds in reverse ladder order so you wouldn’t have consecutive picks. Brisbane, Essendon and any other clubs would have pudding picks alternating with North’s.

Any leftover points from bid matching will generate a pick of that value in the draft order (unless the pick used to match is in the first round), so that also wouldn’t be at the end of the draft, e.g. if Brisbane matches a bid for Ashcroft at pick 2, 55 would become about 43 with the leftover points after moving up from the removed picks.

By the end of the first round the bid matching should have used about 9 of the later picks, but should also create 2-3 matched bid picks that push everything else back, so your net improvement at the end of the draft is six places higher than pick 76-odd, with any such picks alternated with Brisbane and Essendon’s pudding picks.

The other thing to consider is that any club you trade with who acquires two of your picks will also have their two last picks become inactive due to insufficient list spots, so overall you’d come forward another two spots with that.

So from 76 and 79 we’ve moved up to 68 and 71 so far, for a combined 110 draft points (you might get an F3 for them if someone actually wanted them).

Once the first round is done though I’m not sure how many clubs would have a use for 100 odd points in the draft unless they have a father-son or northern academy prospect set to go between pick ~22 and pick 40 (remembering that they can’t match NGAs until pick 40, at which point you only need 200 points to match).

Of course, further bids and passes will move those picks up a bit more, but by the time clubs have started passing on their own picks, they’re not going to want to trade for the last couple of picks in the draft.

I don't see how that is possible.

After the Ashcroft bid, pick 55 moves up to pick 52, in this scenario.

If there are any points left over from our pick 38, you can not add them to pick 55.

Next either Fletcher is bid on, or Davey is bid on.

If Davey is the next player bid on, and the bid comes after Essendon's pick 22, then that pick 52 stays exactly where it is. If the Davey bid is made before Essendon's pick 22, then Essendon probably make a live trade, say trading with Melbourne for their pick 37 and future second round pick (which is likely a mid to late 30's pick).

Source.

My understanding, from a Brisbane perspective, is that all fully used up picks go to the very back of the draft.

Source = live updating the draft every year and observing that the picks don’t all turn up in order with all of Brisbane’s picks and then all of North’s and then all of Essendon’s or whatever. They alternate.

They go to the back of the draft and then, amongst themselves, are organised into rounds in reverse ladder order.

Yep.

You’re right, if it wasn’t used at all it’d go up to about 52 and the last hundred points or whatever would stay with the previous pick which would move back to about 67 or wherever it fits in (sorry not gonna look it up at this hour).

Pretty sure it’s something we used to think happened and I forgot that we figured out it was wrong 🫠😂

Nah that part of my comment had nothing to do with those. Was purely doing bad math adding about 100 points to ~51 which I shouldn’t have been doing as mentioned above.

That's the bit that wasn't clear to me in your previous post. I interpreted what you said previously, somewhat different.

I thought that the next pick that is matched by the team, can’t be traded. It must be used immediately.
This was spoken about many times in relation to Bulldogs picks for the last two years. Our first pick was going to get frozen and be untradable…. Other picks and future picks could then be traded. Any picks traded to another club, could then not be traded back using another trade.

Unless there was a rule change I missed in the last two years, you can still make a trade when a bid is placed.

We (the Lions) did this in both the 2019 and 2020 drafts.

In both cases we traded out the very next pick for multiple later picks, that allowed us to points match, and gave us another pick that wasn’t at the very end of the draft.

There's barely 80 draftable players this year tbf
Bulldogs seem set to take 1-2 extra rookies into next year and 1-2 main list spots less.
Could be a reflection on the current draft quality as rookies only get 1 year deals, late draftees are guaranteed 2.

If there were overagers who missed selection in the last few years, take 'em.
If there were they would have alraedy been taken in the Rookie/Mid season/Supplementary drafts.
The only reason there would be 50 taken this year is because clubs are forced to make at least three picks.
Otherwise I'd suspect clubs would be struggling to pick 50 players.

This year's draft pool is fine, every year the media writes doom and gloom about current year and overhypes the future years prospects(I guess it's their job to get views based on talking rubbish), last year they said this year was a bumper crop of ruck/kpps based on early predictions and clubs should stock up on picks this year, just realise they are early predictions and current years players are fine.

Adelaide we're onto you, you can’t draft another year 8 kid, that’s illegal

A couple of dogs are in our sights for next year too...
