Alright, I've come to the decision that with my year coming to an end, (work-related and that) I'll have another go at running a phantom draft this year, I'll set up the threads tomorrow. I allow live trading because its a point of difference to others on here. In my opinion, it's good fun, PM me if you want in, all welcome but it is first come first served. I'm gonna draft for the Saints, cause I want to. Clubs taken are Haw, GWS, St K, WCE, and WB.

Here's last year if you were curious about how they work;

Covid lockdowns really starting to impact the quality of players coming through the draft, particularly from Vic. Thgese kids have missed too much crucial development at critical ages where they build foundational skills. The Elite kids can probably catch up but those outside the first round are really going to battle.

A dozen players considered to be first-round “locks” have been invited to the opening night of the AFL National Draft later this month.

Brisbane father-son prospect Will Ashcroft is among a group of invitees which also includes No. 1 pick fancy Aaron Cadman and expected North Melbourne-bound pair George Wardlaw and Harry Sheezel.

Other players to receive invites are Elijah Tsatas, Bailey Humphrey, Reuben Ginbey, Mattaes Phillipou, Cameron Mackenzie, Ollie Hollands, Jhye Clark and Jedd Busslinger.

Ed Allan is a tall midfielder at 194cm, but recruiters expect him to start his AFL career across halfback.

“He’s certainly got some good traits and comes from good stock,” one recruiter said.

“He’s a very good decision-maker so you could see him sitting across halfback early in his career and playing that really well. His ability to use the footy by foot is really good.”

If West Coast doesn’t pounce on Allan early, there are a raft of other interested clubs including Melbourne, Sydney and Carlton.

THE MID-DRAFT LOTTERY

Clubs are still working hard to finalise their boards before the national draft later this month.

But what is becoming clear is that after a standout top end, the draft order is somewhat unclear.

“The top-10 looks pretty set but from 11 to 30 it can vary a little bit,” one recruiter said.
“Some people are putting this draft down but there’s plenty of kids that I don’t mind that might be there at the back end of the draft.”

My rough tiers, based purely on my perception of their talent and ability to adapt at AFL level.

A+
Ashcroft

A
Wardlaw
Cadman
Sheezal
Hewett
Clark

B+
Phillipou
Humphrey
Busslinger
Ginbey
Jefferson
Davey
George
Hustwaite

B
McKenzie
Hayes
Tstatas
Jones
Hollands
Hotton
Konstanty
Fletcher
Cowan
Clarke

Just doesn’t strike me as a great draft pool. Tapers off big time after the first few selections and I can see a lot of potential busts.

If I was a team in a flag window I’d be looking up trade up or trade into the first round of next year’s draft. Eg a prospect taken at 15 is as likely to come on as a player taken at 30.

out of interest why do you think Darcy Jones is a B grader and not an A+er? I feel like we all get so swept up in mock drafts that it starts to affect the way we think. I mean Cadman is in the A grade but he'd be one of the worst kicks for goal in the pool. A guy like Jones has traits in the mould of a Johannison or Caleb Daniel imo. What point of difference does Ashcroft have in his game other than accumulating? His disposals are average, he doesn't break the lines. He works hard both ways though.

I focus moreso on what a player can bring to the table than fixate on areas of improvement - which are often addressed at AFL level anyway.

In the vision I have seen Cadman looks like a reliable shot on goal. In a better pool he’d be lower ranked but he has all the traits a recruiter would look for in a future key position forward - clean hands, great leading patterns, nice kick - but also has pretty good ability around the ground for his size.

Jones would be higher ranked if there was a clear position for him at AFL level. Reckon he’s more likely to make it as a crafty half forward than a midfielder, but otherwise I like him. Great forward-half instincts and nous around goal.

Ashcroft has more attributes than you can poke a stick at. Ridiculously fast hands, lethal around the stoppages and also very good around goals. He’s arguably better than Rowell or Walsh at the same age.

So, post draft, North have traded:

43, 59, 2023/2nd (North) -> 23, 2023/4th (Haw)

Or on current ladder positions:

19, 43, 59 for 23, 60

Another trade on the cards

So if we're sending back a later pick to you in this draft as well as a future 3rd round pick, it would be this years pick 55, and going by this years ladder, hopefully our own future 3rd round pick, which would currently sit at pick 53. It's pretty much a break even trade.

Will clubs be careful of taking Tassie Kids like Cowan knowing they will probably lose them once the Tassie team comes in, or will they be aggressive because compo for the Tassie kids is likely to be overs to lure them back to the apple isle and smart teams will use this to their advantage.

These draftee Q&As could be so much more interesting. What's your least favourite food, what's your favourite TV show? Give me "which of your fellow draftees is completely out of their league?" "have you ever been brought home drunk by the cops at 4am?" "who's gonna get suspended for nut punching Jack Ginnivan first?"
