VFL Sydney Swans 2022 Season Preview

Established: 1919

Home Ground: Tramway Oval/SCG

Reserves/VFL Premierships: 4 (2005, 2006, 2007, 2008)

Coach: Jeremy Laidler

2021 Captain: Adam Gulden

2022 Leadership Group is yet to be announced.

2021 was a tough season with just two wins coming against the GWS Giants in the first VFL Sydney Derby in the opening round and a 33 point win against the Collingwood Magpies in round five. A close loss to Geelong and the Gold Coast Suns at home would have been tough and the season ended up becoming tougher when they were forced to a hub in Victoria and had to use NAB League talent.

2021 Ladder Position:

2021 Awards:
  • Best and Fairest: Lewis Taylor
  • Leading Goal Kicker: Logan McDonald (12)

Nick Shipley was delisted from the GWS Giants and has decided to join the Swans as has ex-Academy talent, Kye Pfengle. The Swans have also suffered some big losses to the South Australian state league with Samuel Thorne and Reed van Huisstede departing to the central state.

Incoming Players: Nicholas Shipley (GWS Giants), Kye Pfengle

Outgoing Players: Samuel Thorne (North Adelaide), Reed van Huisstede (North Adelaide)

primary listed players only

The Sydney Swans have a very similar list to 2021 with nine from last year's primary list on this year's list while using the development squad as a home for Swans Academy players. Adam Gulden will continue to bring leadership to the team after acting as captain last season.

Geddes and Anderson feel like they would be the top choices as top up players as both were reasonably close to being drafted, or at least in the discussion.

(I removed it for the sake of peace and expanding knowledge of the east coast competition, don't worry )
Thanks so much for correction. Here's a probably unwanted history lesson - The BoB tag got thrust upon both teams by Sheeds and the AFL and was loathed immediately by everyone in NSW & Sydney in particular. As soon as Sheeds pissed off back south both teams couldn't changed it to Derby quick enough.

Hearing BoB being used down south still by major media outlets (we're looking at you 3AW) after all these years we feel is pretty disrespectful. Would they dare call the Showdown the Sandcastle Cup? No, they wouldn't. So while using BoB it may seem trivial and small to outsiders its a big deal for us that the Derby be called what it is.

Maybe our Board should dub Tiges v Dons matches the Helium Head Cup in honour (not) of Sheedy.

Yes there was a scratch match against the Giants earlier today, a report is available at RWO

Ladhams Fox Amartey Clarke Reid Co.Warner Gould Taylor Sheather played
Read the report.

Warner #2 played wing but isn't afraid to get amongst it. The Warner lads know how to go hard at it, it seems.
Sheather: Continues to improve and is another midfielder goer
Reid: played entirely in defence. If they play him there entirely for VFL it will set him up nicely if we need him for best 22 back 6 if we get injuries.
Ladhams: Reported to lack energy & was hardly impressive.

I'm getting Dylan Stephens circa 2021 vibes from Ladhams.

Seemed in the frame for the best 22, got injured right when the round 1 team was starting to take shape, now might be struggling a bit to play 'catch up'.

Hopefully doesn't become a prolonged saga throughout the season like Stephens' woes were.

Bulldogs side

B: Buku Khamis, Bailey Williams, Bailey Van De Heuvel
HB: Charlie Cormack, Luke Cleary, Louis Butler,
C: Arthur Jones, Robbie McComb, Jarrod Gilbee
HF: Josh Schache, Tim O’Brien, Cody Raak
F: Rhylee West, Stefan Martin, Riley Garcia
R: Jordon Sweet, Mitch Wallis, Lachie Sullivan,
Int: Josh Kellett, Joshua Chatfield, Austin Hodge, Will Lewis
23rd player: Ewan Macpherson
Emer: Luke Goater, Dan Orgill, Charlie MacIsaac, Hugo Bromell, Cooper Craig-Peters, Angus Bade.

Looks strong with 13 listed players. The ruck battle between Ladhams/Sinclair/McAndrew with Martin/Sweet should be interesting. Gould/Melican will get a strong challenge from O'Brien/Schache
