Oi! Can you mob stop ruining this thread please?

People are entitled to be: (a) delusionally optimistic; (b) excessively pessimistic; or (c) somewhere in between.

It is pre-season where stupidity (opinion based on little evidence) is rife in the football community - as it should be. That is why we all spend ridiculous amounts of money on memberships and merchandise with the subconscious hope that our predictions will or won't come true and our team will beat out the other 17 by the end of the year.

Anyone tempering expectations is understandably just protecting themselves from later embarrassment. Yes it may be the easy road but it is hard being a Freo supporter. Whilst those willing to declare that a premiership is in reach are either brave or most likely just don't give a shit about being proved wrong by other anonymous people online in a few months time.

It all stems from the same place for all of us... misery from not having won a first premiership yet.

It's so hard to tell. There could be any number of the other factors that have changed from last year to this, that made a more critical difference. From the outside, he seems a quality individual and coach, but there are many moving parts. Hopefully, more of an impact will come from a culmination of the number of previous years work, development and decision making, because that would be more baked in and longer-lasting.

I half wonder how much people are overbuying into the WC halo effect. It's understandable given how much the local media inflates their tyres... when in reality they haven't been all that great over the past few years.
In the past with our assistants they have tended to either lack experience, or they are more journeymen types. I tend to put any credit/blame for their performance back to the senior coach. They are working under the senior coach, often doing an apprenticeship.

Graham is a little different. He has built a career as a forward coach and we went shopping for that. The credit/blame still ultimately goes to the senior coach but it revolves around that decision. I think it was clearly a smart decision.

If I can't get my hopes up unbelievably high, only to be let down only because of my own wild fantasies, what's the point of sport?

The unwarranted optimism is the fun part, realism is boring

The post I was quoted on was from September 2021.

I stand by those posts yet old mate here has his back up after 1 pre season win.

The lids off for me.
Spent the last 6 years justifying being trash.
No finals 1 derby win
Got 10 wins last year with one of the worst injury and goal kicking displays I’ve seen and home games at oppo venue.
All that is improving this year and we will play finals.
Finishing 5th with 4 more wins then 2021 and making w2 of final
I’m excited!

When are we likely to see the squad for the weekend named?

We can do all of that without getting snippy at other posters - seeing other wharf fans called out with a degree of nastiness kills the vibe a touch. Be positive, be negative just be respectful?

I recognise I'm starting to sound like a mod (and I'm pretty new here so let me know if I'm overstepping) but I'd be saving that sort of shade for throwing at Carlton fans after we pump them this year.

The average age of the team running out week to week is one of the most telling stats when you want to predict performance. There seems to be a tipping point around 24.5 years. But you could also look at some array stats and how age and experience are distributed (eg how many in the 18-21 bracket, 22-26 bracket, 27-31 bracket, 32+ etc) across the teams. So older teams (24.5+ years) will have a much stronger record than younger teams (>24.5 years) and that trend gets stronger the bigger the discrepancy.

I haven't looked at them all, but being one of the youngest teams running out there week to week (and generally with a lower experience to age ratio on top of that) I'd say we'd perform pretty favourably on both age/experience discrepancy over the past few years. It's pretty much expected we'd lose more than we'd win against top sides as they will be much better equipped in terms of age and experience. This year, as a whole, we should be an older and more experienced group week to week than we were last year, especially if we can keep our key players on the park.

I have been doing this for each team (I have completed 8 clubs at this stage). Obviously, things may change between now and 9th March
It is easy enough to extract the data when the team for Round 1 is announced

As for the entire squad:
Average age (as of today - not the end of the year): 24.05 years old

Breakdown of age groups using the quoted brackets:
Note 1: Each player's age is calculated by what their age will be on the last day of 2022 (i.e. A player who won't turn 25 until the end of the year is still listed as 25 years old)
Note 2: Each bracket is listed from the oldest player to the youngest by birthdate (e.g. In the 27-31 age bracket, Walters is the oldest player and Aish is the youngest)

32+ [1]: Mundy(37)
27-31 [11]: Walters(31), Colyer(31), Fyfe(31), Wilson(29), Lobb(29), Hamling(29), Taberner(29), Hughes(28), Pearce(27), Acres(27), Aish(27)
22-26 [16]: Ryan(26), Blakely(26), Switkowski(26), Tucker(25), Schultz(25), Banfield(24), Logue(24), Meek(24), Darcy(24), Cox(24), Brodie(24), Crowden(23), Brayshaw(23), Sturt(22), Frederick(22), Clark(22)
18-21 [13]: Serong(21), Young(21), Henry(21), Chapman(20), O'Driscoll(20), Worner(20), Treacy(20), Western(20), Walker(20), Johnson(19), Amiss(19), Benning(19), Erasmus(19)

You have a 4 year old as well haha...
No. :flushed:
A handful between 9 and 18.
Seriously underrated film though. well timed too with the vocal minority themes around.

Creating space in the forward line (what WCE were great at) allowing delivery to a one-on-one or an open teammate. That's what I'm looking for from Graham.

None of those teams were realistic flag contenders. When Sydney actually became half decent in the second half of last year they beat us easily.
I’d say our best win under Jlo was actually against the saints in 2020 when we came from about 40 points down. At the time they were seen as contenders, but soon unsurprisingly turned out to be just pretenders.
The top sides have pretty much all dispatched us with ease in the last 2 seasons. Against sides like brisbane, port, Geelong, Melbourne last year, the doggies - the opposition have all had the points in the bag by the 3 quarter siren. That’s my main point.
Pretty sure we beat the Doggies and Melbourne in 2020?

The way he charged out, picked up that ground ball, and under pressure fired out a sharp handball in last Friday's game...he's back in my good books!
he also had some poor ground balls as well, really hope he's improved those

if at no point i consider if we're going to go 22-0 for the season, is it really an off-season?
I'm thinking it's a Tasmanian thing.
that's usually a safe explanation for everything

I've never rated our forward line as collectively smart, although some individuals are. I want Graham to keep it reasonably clear and simple for them. It typically hasn't looked that way.
