if at no point i consider if we're going to go 22-0 for the season, is it really an off-season?

Every year I do the preseason "ladder predictor"on the afl website and every year i somehow get Freo to 20-2. And I consider myself unbiased.

I have been doing this for each team (I have completed 8 clubs at this stage). Obviously, things may change between now and 9th March
It is easy enough to extract the data when the team for Round 1 is announced

As for the entire squad:
Average age (as of today - not the end of the year): 24.05 years old

Breakdown of age groups using the quoted brackets:
Note 1: Each player's age is calculated by what their age will be on the last day of 2022 (i.e. A player who won't turn 25 until the end of the year is still listed as 25 years old)
Note 2: Each bracket is listed from the oldest player to the youngest by birthdate (e.g. In the 27-31 age bracket, Walters is the oldest player and Aish is the youngest)

There is a good spread of ages there and also a good spread of talent within each age group too.

Just as a rough judgement of each group I thought 5 of 12 players in the over 27yo group (so including Mundy) were very good players.

10 of the 16 in the 22yo to 26yo group were very good players (imo)

And 4 of the 13 in the 18yo to 21 yo group are already very good players. 8 of those in the youngest group are yet to play a game or have only played minimal games so I didn't include them as good players but some definitely will become good players and hopefully some become very good players. We have a nice spread of talent through all age groups that will hopefully help us transition as the veterans retire over the coming years.

Yeah we beat Melbourne who were average that year and didn’t make finals. Dogs beat us comfortably in that’s round of 2020 season

On the topic of this thread, we'll have to come up with a new way to manage training reports next year. It's clear a lot of people like being able to just come in and read and discuss reports but at the same time, it's preseason and harmless fun banter should be part of it..

I think next year we'll break it into a preseason and general discussion thread and a training report discussion thread which will be strictly controlled / moderated.

I think a lot of people essentially come onto BF in preseason to read a training report and discussion on it. They specifically watch the thread for it, the threadmarks are great for keeping track of them but I think we can still highlight, celebrate and discuss them better

Yeah, this is on me, I didnt start using the threadmarks until later in the preseason. It's a feature I'll be using more going forward for reports

I just had a quick attempt at comparing your analysis against our 2013 team (our best year). It's all pretty obvious stuff - we lack the depth in the experienced group (27+). We have similar depth in the 22-26 bracket but not as much top end talent. We however seem to have a much superior 18-21 group (although time will tell). You can see why we fell drastically after 2015 - it's very unpleasant reading.

People are entitled to be: (a) delusionally optimistic; (b) excessively pessimistic; or (c) somewhere in between.

It is pre-season where stupidity (opinion based on little evidence) is rife in the football community - as it should be. That is why we all spend ridiculous amounts of money on memberships and merchandise with the subconscious hope that our predictions will or won't come true and our team will beat out the other 17 by the end of the year.

Anyone tempering expectations is understandably just protecting themselves from later embarrassment. Yes it may be the easy road but it is hard being a Freo supporter. Whilst those willing to declare that a premiership is in reach are either brave or most likely just don't give a sh*t about being proved wrong by other anonymous people online in a few months time.

It all stems from the same place for all of us... misery from not having won a first premiership yet.

This is why I'll brick anyone who denies the fact Benning will be the greatest AFL player to ever live then win an academy award when playing himself in the biopic.

“Neil went really strong, he’s going to go really well because his work rate is elite. He’s got plenty of tricks but that’s his one-wood at the moment,” Valentine told The West.

“He puts his head over the footy and he cracks in. He’s going to be a good player.

And this makes me very happy.

“Treacy was dominant at that level, he was a class above in terms of impact on the game and the way he went about it so that will give JL (Longmuir) something to think about this week,” Valentine said.

“His marking was really strong, he presented really well, kicks the ball beautifully and is a ripping team player.”

Very positive feedback. This equalled the form of Chapman and Henry as the biggest positives of the weekend.

Treacy at 19 being so clearly above WAFL level is big for a KPF. We know that Erasmus has talent and is athletic, the competitive piece is often the question mark. Big news.
