Training 2022 Training Reports

NOD came over for a chat with those watching training at the end of the session when his training was done. He said the coaches wanted him to play wing this year and move into the middle later in his career. From memory he did some great sprint times in draft testing and he finished second overall in the repeat 1km's recently. He also said that he thought his good mate Chapman was dominating during training and would be in our best 22 next season.

I don’t know why I thought of this, but I do have a soft spot for NOD & the way he goes about it. With a full preseason he’s going to be a completely different player to the one we saw last year chasing his tail.

Yeah the reports are excellent. Keep them coming. Living in Mandurah, I am almost as excited to watch Peel Thunder this year as I am to watch our AFL team. We have so much depth now, and so many players competing for a spot in the 22. I'll try to share some helpful Thunder reports during home games. Can't wait.

Henry is going to be pushed out of the b22 if he is aiming for a wing position. Much better options in Clark, Tucker, Aish, NOD etc.

Henry has the capabilities to be something different, there is a bit of a question mark around what role that is best use in.
I still personally think high half forward will be best for him, as opposed to actually based on a wing, but he could rotate between the two depending on what we look at the wing role for and who else we have through there.

I still believe a small forward role is the easiest route to a B22 position initially, but probably not long term the absolute best spot for him.
Increasing his pressure game would be beneficial, so hope he continues to get pressed on that.

Yeah I still think he's more Daniel Wells than Brad Hill... Just doesn't have the blistering pace an gut running capabilities I don't think. If he could really put on some muscle and strength I'd love to see what he could do in the midfield.

Henry is one of the big question marks over the next two seasons. Currently he is behind at least 3 as a small forward and more than that on the wing. That doesn't include Freddy or any of the new draftees. I am not sure if he is ahead of Crowden on output, perhaps on perceived talent or expected ceiling. If he was not picked early, would we be talking about him based on his performances?

I am not writing him off, I just haven't seen a lot on field to get excited about. Hoping that changes this year, it wouldn't be bad to see him dominate WAFL for a period of time before coming into the team.

"Fremantle are set to send Liam Henry to the wing in 2021 as senior coach Justin Longmuir looks to get the most out of the top-10 pick’s skillset.

Henry has played the majority of his 20 games as a small forward, a role that according to Longmuir, doesn't best suit the 20-year-old's strengths.

This included 17 games in 2021, where he kicked 10.9.

“We’re going to try Liam Henry up the ground a little bit more, give him the opportunity to use his attributes and his running ability to change angles with the ball and take the game on,” Longmuir told 6PR.

“Through need more than anything, we played him as a deeper forward last year and it probably didn’t suit his style of play and didn’t allow him to play to his strengths.

“He’s trained there (on the wing) all pre-season and he’s been really impressive with his intensity and his work rate at training.

“I think it’s exciting, up the ground he’s able to play to his strengths a little bit more and when he gets the ball in his hands, things usually happen.”..."

Henry was a winger in U18s, Western was a clearance mid. Amazing how playing these two in those positions will see their best for the side.

Henry is satin smooth on the wing. A month into the season with him there will have him tattooed into the position leaving the other for the rotation.

Clark doesn't seem to be an option. Tucker should simply replace Cerra in his hybrid midfielder role.

When he is getting more touches and taking the easy option with some of them he will really shine

I refuse to believe Clark will play in the backline in the long term. Our management can not be that incompetent.

The team has been after a consistent runner or runners off half back for a few years.

2 seasons ago they were trying to encourage Luke Ryan to get up the ground more often, others do a bit, but management would like to really pressure other teams in this area.

This also was part of Wilson’s brief but he has been inconsistent.

People like to protect Henry from criticism but his attitude is holding him back. I still get the 'show pony' vibes from him but I could be wrong. I do know he has potential it's just about releasing it.

It's not a matter of protecting him from criticism, more a case of evaluating the salience of whatever the particular criticism might be. He's not even played two full seasons of AFL footy yet, he's still got a tonne of potential developing to have. Releasing the potential can easily just be from experience and the natural trajectory of growth.

Great to hear that Henry is going to be used on the wing. Watching his few games at Peel, it was obvious that he thrives in space. He will have the ball on a string and accurately deliver it to our forwards. Can't wait to watch him in 2022.

Last year I thought that almost every touch Henry got upfield was gold; the wing being a little less crowded than the 50m arc really allowed his evasiveness and kicking to stand out, + he's not yet strong enough to smash through hardened defenders
