Training 2022 Training Reports

Has anyone who has been following training got any comment on how Hayden Young has been training and particularly who he has been going in the running trials? I am wondering if the competition for HBF spots between Chapman, Clark, Walker, Wilson, Aish maybe Logue and O'Driscoll will affect him (if at all) and whether a lack of athleticism compared to some of the above will impact him?

Does Young really have a lack of athleticism?

Young will play if fit.
Clark, Wilson & Walker are competing for 2 spots in the backline, Logue and Hamling competing for 3rd tall position.

Young would be ahead of all of those mentioned. Chapman may one day.

I have only been to a couple training sessions, bloody work. He had a delayed start to the season.
But he will start. Last preseason during some match sims it was obvious that they were trying get the ball in his hands . And why wouldn't you?

Does Young really have a lack of athleticism?

I would have thought that Clark, Walker, Aish, Logue and O'Driscoll were faster. (Given this is the preseason training thread) Is there any evidence from training to suggest that he is better than any of them in the fitness stakes?

Young, a lack of athleticism!!!! Really!!! .He has a football brain. He is a footballer.
Can remember one player for us who, when first sighted, was slow, seemed to just wander around the park. The crowd screaming, for FS chase.
Turns out Young plays the same position that that young kid played when we first recruited him.
That fella played, has played, 354 games. A club record. A former skipper. Regarded as one of the best going around in certain circles. He didn't look like an athlete either, but Gee he could, and still can play.

Big call but I like it.

Before we drafted Johnson & Erasmus I thought it was a clear path into the midfield for Young after a spending a couple of full seasons in the backline, now I’m not so sure.
in 5 years there’ll be room in the middle for all of Brayshaw, Serong, Young, Johnson and Erasmus, but until Mundy, Fyfe and Walters retire, one or two of them will have to bide their time forward or back.

Opening this thread keen for optimistic reports only to find Covid discussion in the non Covid thread.

Well you should know they're on holidays, so not sure why you expected anything different...

Rubbish Young has a lack of athleticism. He was playing one out on the likes of Shai Bolton last year and played on the quickest small forward as much as anyone in the game he played. He has put on a fair bit of leg strength over the summer and is looking really strong through the core when tackled. His athleticism is drastically underrated. I think they wlll give him midfield minutes when Mundy is out but the majority of time will be in defence.

Young's not slow. Far from actually. With some added leg strength he is becoming an athletic beast. He certainly keeps up with repeat sprint drills.

Not Aish he would be slower. The other 4 (Clark, Logue, Odriscoll and Walker) would in our fastest dozen.

I never suggested Young was slow. Maybe the previous poster was alluding to that.
He is a footballer first , an athlete second.

They might be faster but at the end of the day Hayden young is a better footballer than all those guys. No doubt about it.
Aish is a run of the mill role player. Walker looks promising but has only played 10 games and doesn’t accumulate huge possessions.
Logue is an athletic freak (who in a massive fan of) but does have questions over his decision making under pressure at times IMO.
Clark wasn’t in the best 28 players at Geelong last year or the year before.
NOD has never played a game at AFL level.
Put it this way - if we can’t fit Young into our B22 his year because he’s not good enough - lock in the top 4 spot now and book in a deep finals run.

So Young has been training well? I note that Sheriff has said that he is keeping up with the repeat sprints.

Just to be clear, I wasn't necessarily saying that Young would be out or even not the first one picked; I am just trying to get a feel for who is looking the best out of the HBFs at the pre-season. I am prepared (or preparing) for something that might surprise me; I kind of feel that Clark is perhaps even more of a lock than Young at this stage just simply because he has been in the system longer and is more attacking with his kicking (not saying that Young's kicking isn't good) and Chapman sounds as though he is also killing it in the offseason, and he has the benefit of having more defensive skills against taller players than Young as well. And then there is Aish who brings much more experience.

He is a very powerful athlete now though especially for someone so young.I'd say he is both now. An athlete and a footballer. We were also playing him on the oppositions quickest small forward towards the end of last year. He is quickish too.

I don't really think Longmuir is the kind of coach who 'surprises'. But it would be crazy if we can't find alternative positions for some of those hbf-ers. So much talent.

I can see why you say JLo does not surprise in some ways. On the other hand I think backing in Freddie in 2020 and Walker in 2021, dropping Acres and not renewing Conca we’re all quite bold actions.

Again, I never, repeat, never said he was slow. Others suggested it.

Ryan - Pearce - Louge
Clark - Cox - Young
- Chapman.
Would be my ideal back 7.
Nice balance of attack / Defense.
