Preseason report #5

Firstly it was bloody hot today at training and the players are superhuman to push through it. Lots of talk and encouragement in the group which was great to hear and Impressive with Fyfe and Mundy in rehab.

The group is super fit and very driven.

Rehab
Mundy - running very well no concerns
Amiss - no strapping on the knee now and continuing to build fitness
Walker - still in rehab but did participate in some main drills - looks close to returning to main group
Fyfe - what can you say, a more dedicated athlete at a footy club you are unlikely to find. Now taking overhead marks on the “marks bag”. Kicking looks greatly improved and stayed and worked on his game for the entire session.
Tabs looks good and building fitness.
Tracey - looks a long way behind Fyfe and Tabs
Crowden - new to rehab strapping on left knee and moving pretty ginger

Main group
Big group again with Peel boys participating
Match simulation was Purple v Yellow
Erasmus played the match sims in the midfield playing on players such as Brayshaw. He looks like he has been playing for years in our team, Johnson also had lots of midfield minutes and used the ball well.

Standouts
Serong still with the orange cap but played fully and was a bull in the midfield.
Chapman dashing out of the backline and backing his skills was outstanding
Walters still the best forward and kick into the forward line, he is over his previous injuries
Hamling and Sturt participated in the match sim but did not get a lot of ball
Frederick much more involved than last training

Disappointing
Poor movement into forward fifty continues despite training this every session
The scoreboard read Purple 3goals 22behinds and Yellow 6goals 28 behinds (can you believe it!)

TTHD
Giving it to Serong and Erasmus because after the match sim the players were made to have more running (insane) and they just continued to compete with each other to see who would come first in every run.

So, I went down to Rusty's Markets and bought a tray of mangoes, and under the mangoes was a sheet of paper. It looks like some kind of training notes, so I thought I'd whack them in here. Enjoy...

Training Report

Considering the oppressive heat all week hats off to the club and players putting the hard work in. They cover so much distance and at a good running capacity.

After warm ups came drills and match play.

Today's match play was more open than usual with less emphasis on blanketing the ball carrier and opponents running to position. I give a bit more credit to Brodie who had more influence on the game helping to set up play.

The young indigenous lad George (I may not have his name correct) is a gun. Sign him up now. Has skills as good as any small forward in the AFL, kicks goals with no fear of missing and takes a very strong contested mark. Is he affiliated with Freo in any way because he's a gun.

Our Rucks were Meek and Lobb. Both pushing forward. Our forward line looks thin at the moment for talls with Amiss, Tabs and Tracey in modified programs. I would think Tabs and Amiss will be ready for round 1 but underdone.

I'm a massive fan of Young and Chapman. Give them a few years and they will be running off half back with ease. Young has vision and a beautiful kick. He looks built up and strong. They both read the play perfectly along side Ryan and Cox.

Pearce, Wilson and Logue have had uninterrupted pre seasons which bodes well for the back 6 or seven depending how they line up. Hughes has trained well also.

Hamling and Walker have had a cautious approach. Walker joining in everything oher than match sims. Not sure why, he looks fit and strong.

Not sure why they need Clarke in the back line however he hasn't missed a beat.

Fyfe running well and taking overhead marks with no contact. My guess is he will be ready for the practice match prior to the season opener, same with Mundy who is running strongly.

Out of the new recruits Erasmus has impressed me the most, however, today Johnson looks equally as good. He seems to play more outside than Erasmus. Both understand the game well.

West Aus is the best country in the world.

Peace

That scoreline, is it something you counted, something the team counted?

I know we are bad but I struggle to believe 9 goals 50...

Thanks for the training reports, much appreciated.

Perhaps they were playing some sort of modified rules games where they scored a point for something the coaches wanted to see happen? At least I hope so.
Yeah that must be the reason, coaches wanted to practice end to end ball movement starting from the kick in. Bet we were actually kicking goals but they signalled a behind to start the next drill.

Marc Murphy isn't getting a hold of Will Brodie this season, you can take that to the bank

Thanks for the reports guys.

For the love of god, can we just let JMT back on the board so that Cesoir can drop the subterfuge?
Cesoir is holding him hostage so he can bask in the likes. We all know it’s true.

Could very much see Tucker filling the Cerra spot nicely.
Looks like it. It's a bit of a hybrid role. Hoping Tucker hype is more than hype. I've been excited about his potential before, and he's not a bad player, but he hasn't really managed to be a locked in best 22 either.

Has all the physical attributes to play AFL, and has certainly teased us all.
But he is no inside Bull, but has class on the outside just drifts in and out of games.
There are only a handful of players who lift when the going gets tough and Tucker isn’t one of them.
But he can certainly finish off the hard work.
Let’s hope his body is right, because the last few years he has looked slow, and his awareness has been poor.

As we are going to also see with Michael Walters and Nathan O'Driscol, you can not underestimate the importance of a preseason.
