We're in pretty good shape if Meek lifts his game to the point where he's challenging Darcy. Would be hard to believe that kind of meteoric rise after his performance against St Kilda though...
I think Darcy is a bit rusty. He dropped some pretty easy marks last week.

So is it a good thing or a bad thing that a slowish midfielder with no tank and average disposal is dominating clearances for us?
Not really, his strength is clearances and our two best clearance mids are arguably Fyfe and Mundy who are both not taking part so far.

He's not battling the A-squad with Mundy & Fyfe out and AB / Serong split across different teams so its not a reflection on the team as a whole, but a good reflection of him.

Also, dominating clearances has never been a problem for him, regardless of opposition

Does anyone really trust the listed heights anymore? They almost always seem to be out of date.
I do when the player is past the age of 25.

any earlier and the club may be fudging. aka pav being listed at 190cm for most of his career and fyfe being listed at 185cm for 3 years. Then being updated to 188cm before being relisted at 192cm a couple of years ago.

Wasn’t Mundy slow with no tank when he was moved to inside mid? I’d be concerned if Brodie was dominating anything other than clearances. His disposal by hand is tidy and creative so he suits the inside.

That really makes Treacy a true KPP candidate, as opposed to a marking third tall size, any more growth from here is pure bonus.

Also good to hear that Brodie is doing well, my expectations when he came across were that he’d spend his contract at Peel so anything above that is a bonus.

You never know, he could still make it.

So Sturt played well. Or so it seems from Duff.
And all is not lost with his report on Brodie.
And in my opinion, Duff is a very good judge. He calls them as he sees them.

Yes the best at reporting by a fair margin but again it was stated that it was Sturt’s first match sim, well I have seen him play in two previous!

Western kicked a couple of goals and looked lively.
Thanks for the training report! I'm reading some good things about Western in training reports this preseason so seems like he's stepping up to another level. If he can make the most of his pace he'll be a nightmare to play on.

Players improve.

Probably has worked on his tank, maybe playing to his strengths.
As I have said before, look at that slow over weight fella that played for Carlton ;););). Couldn't run out of sight in a week.
speed is not everything. Knowing where to be when the ball gets there is vital.
Being where the ball is very very important.

If we are playing Fyfe, Mundy and Brodie in the same team than we will need to balance that out with speed on the wings.

Champion data do try and do that, they usually just keep most of those stats private.

"So based on where you are, how much pressure you’re under and what sort of kick you’re trying to hit – whether it’s to a lead, or just going to a pack, or a one on one – how often you should hit the target versus how often you actually did."

Edit:

"Most kicks: Luke Ryan (277)
Best short kick: Sam Switkowski (+13.2%)
Best long kick: Lachie Schultz (+12.5%)
Best kick under pressure: Travis Colyer (+14.3%)
Best kick for goal: Andrew Brayshaw (+19.5%)
Best overall kicking efficiency: Mitch Crowden (+10.8%)

Some interesting names appear here for the Dockers, with Switkowski, Schultz and Colyer all in the elite category for ball use by foot. Interestingly, Brayshaw, who has had his fair share of struggles in front of goal prior to 2021, is Fremantle's best in that department this year, while skipper Nat Fyfe is the club's worst"

Edit 2:
Best short kick: Chris Mayne (+8.7%)
Best overall kicking efficiency: Jordan Clark (+10.4%)
Best kick for goal: Lachie Weller (+11.7%)

Pretty sure I wrote elsewhere in this thread that a combination of stats would better measure whether someone is a good kick but said formula would alienate casual fans. Champion Data has some sort of profile in the AFL media industry (some people think it’s a joke - to me it’s just trying to do a near impossible job) so they get away with saying these are the best kicks in the league without explaining how they came to that conclusion. Good thing too because if you’re not a nerd you probably wouldn’t get it anyway.

I’d be disappointed if Dawson had less than 95% DE given he only ever hand balled it two yards to a team mate…

…but that in itself is a good reason to be a bit more circumspect about DE as an effective measure for players in certain positions. It’s quite right to knock someone like Langdon’s DE when he was with us because most of his possessions were uncontested and we needed him to deliver high quality inside 50s.

Dawson’s kicking efficiency was actually pretty good from memory despite being the worst kick in the team by a fair margin.

I was a bit of a Dawson fan compared to most but I don’t think anyone would say he wasn’t the worst kick in the team. The disposal efficiency stats say otherwise though.

Because of kicks over 40m generally and easy chip kicks in the defensive fifty being considered an effective disposal defenders generally score well in disposal efficiency. Even if you thought the stat was good for measuring anything (which I don’t) you could only use it to compare players who play similar roles.

In contrast to defenders, almost every inside mid runs below 65% efficiency. That isn’t a true reflection on the ability of these guys to hit a target.

Perhaps he meant first full hit-out. I think his other games have been on managed mins.

Both Darcy and Sturt seem to be shaking off the rust as they lifted in the second half reportedly from someone I spoke to who was watching today.
