Training 2022 Training Reports

We shouldn't be playing any injury prone players. So Mundy, Switta, Pearce, Hamling, Sturt, Lobb or Tabbs. We have nothing to prove in a preseason match.
Not playing injury prone players in a pre-season match because they might get injured is illogical. They need to prove they're over their injuries and the best way to do that is in a game where there are no points up for grabs. The worst injury is the in-game injury that leaves you a man short. There is no option other than to back them in due to the hard work they've put in preparing for the season. These guys need practice match minutes MORE than the other players.

Also Mundy is not exactly injury prone... Pearce also looks to have overcome the issues he was having as well.

Don’t get me wrong I rated Cerra very highly. I know he set up plenty of goals with laser kick passes.
But he was one of the worst set shots I’ve ever seen at freo.
For some reason he would turn to jelly when faced with a 30m kick between the posts. That’s what I meant.
He’s not a player who will kick 25 goals a season from the midfield.
If he manages to add that to his game we are talking a potential Brownlow medallist for Carlton.
Still remember him shinning the ball on a 30m set shot in Q1, Rd 1 last year

After 6 months to prepare, that was just appalling

That was my one knock on Cerra. He was well below average for reliability of a mid in front of goals. I had no confidence when he had a shot, sadly, much like Matt DeBoer. Probably a confidence or mental thing but some players never seem to get over it or once they lose it (Mayne) never seem to get it back. Sometimes need the arrogance of a Ballas, Carey, Lynch, Cameron, Stevie J to get through any lean times in front of goal.

Definitely a loss if we don't find others to fill the void Mundy will eventually leave but in the short term, if we have someone who is one or more of being more accountable (pressure and tackling), production (more disposals), speed etc and others on the outside (ie wingers and half forwards) play more of a role kicking i50 then I don't think the loss of Cerra will be that great.

We've lost one of our best kicks i50 but there is the potential to gain in all the areas that were Cerra's weaknesses. With our three remaining best kicks i50 being over 30 (Mundy, Colyer and Walters) we'll still need other players stepping up though. Hopefully Walters, Sturt, Switta, Henry, Freddy, Tucker, Aish and Western can all impact far more in link up than they did last year. And I'm also expecting the revised game plan to have far more attack from our half backs in Clark, Young and Chapman. And Crowden is as good a kick as anyone i50... just needs to get his hands on it more - will be a big bonus for us if he can step up.
Cerra is a loss but his elite delivery can be replicated by the likes of Henry, Young and Johnson. We also have added increased speed to our midfield and weight/height to create a more balanced midfield. The only real downside to losing him is that we have lost a player with 3+ years of experience and will need to train up a new one.

If we can speed up the development of Erasmus and Johnson than we will be at a net positive.

I reckon Caleb is going to up his goals from midfield. He currently kicks big moment goals but I think he's going to start backing himself to bang them from 40-50 like Andy started to do last season.

Yep, the analysis is nuts.

We were 4th for Clearance differential last year (despite plenty of key injuries and having the youngest midfield by a fair margin). I still think it is one of the most useful metrics in determining the best midfields because it is about how well you do against other midfields. Not surprisingly the midfields I thought were the best last year were the top ones in this metric... Bulldogs, Cats, Lions, Demons etc.

I wouldn't claim we were a top 4 midfield last year (because other midfield metrics weren't as good comparatively) but you'd have to be pretty inept at interpreting data to have ours as bottom 4. I'd be shocked if we don't end up showing we are in the top group of midfields this year - Darcy, Brayshaw and Serong have so much more improvement to go, as do the many other options we might run through there. And I'd be surprised if Fyfe had another underwhelming year given he looks nothing like he did last year.

Hopefully defence and midfield top 4 and top 6 respectively. The forward line has been bottom 4 since the dawn of time though, so really that's where we need to improve to middle of the road to not only make finals but be semi competitive.
I think there’s a bit more nuance about how I rate our midfield. At the moment I would confidently say going in to the season we have a top 4 inside midfield; but on the outside we are an unknown quantity and probably starting in the bottom 4.

Losing Cerra doesn’t hurt us in the guts, but it does going inside 50.

I don’t think anyone of us could say hand on heart we’ve got a winger at the moment that we trust or are getting excited about.

Is our best 22 for round 1 settled or still in flux? I think the latter, especially for the last half dozen selections.

  • Anyone who is in contention for a berth should play a half at least.
  • I'd also try and play as. much of our forward line as possible.

Is Bailey Rogers still training with us?
Never was

We haven't had any actual train ons competing for list spots yet, just Peel players who were thanked by the club in a post on Insta the other day

We are cutting it close to getting a train on tbh, season is a month away

Thanks for that.

I used to have a thing for Mimi Rogers...maybe it was a repressed memory that made we think of Bailey.

Whats the hold up anyway? Paperwork shouldn't be an issue. Maybe a pay out pending?
Think JL did hint about a week ago it was paperwork, quote was something like still got a few things to cross off?

At this point it might be too far in to grab someone, they really don't get a decent chance to impress (March 9 cutoff), we may be better off looking at the MSD and tracking a select few players very closely til then

Agree
I read a couple of the vic teams are playing six quarter scratchies this weekend and rotating all their squads through, I guess fatigue injury is a risk but otherwise sounds like a good way to look at and trial many different combos

6 quarters of course being an oxymoron, reminding me of the time I went to watch us play the swans at the scg in the early 2000s when I was living in Sydney, and sat behind a knowledgeable pair of sydneysiders asking questions like "where is fremantle from?" and "how many quarters in a game?"

In regards to Cerra, I think he is a work in progress. He will become a much better than average player.
Sadly he wanted, needed to go home. I fully understand his position.
But, I believe that we have the players in our squad that will make his departure a non event.
We have recruited well and we can cover his loss.
Am I disappointed the he left, yes I am . But can't help bad luck.
we have his leaving covered in more ways than one.

I've been to plenty of games in Sydney and even though alot of them don't really understand the game alot, they still turn up and are super polite.

Melbourne on the other hand....nearly got bashed in 2012 after we beat the Tigers at the G and the missus was happy singing the freo song and a few blokes turned around and wanted to flatten us.

I was once in Melbourne with a group of mates getting ready to barrack for Freo vs the Hawks. We were 0 wins - 16 losses going into that match and the taxi driver warned us against upsetting the locals. I thought FFS....anyway after the win, I must say supporters were generally good to us and we even had a bloke whose team was Carlton buy us a beer! Pav kicked 4 and JLo 5 that day.

Oh I agree, Vic types are generally more tribal and passionate, which is fun until it goes too far and you end up searching the footpath for your broken teeth. Your average Sydneysider just sees it as a bit of light entertainment for a couple of hours before heading to a trendy bar in Paddington to start the real night out.
