Replies to the match day thread are closed, but I re-watched the game yesterday.

I thought Clark had a really good first game, but I can't say he was better than Wilson. Some powerful running and kicking from the pair.

Interested to know others thoughts because I get the feeling some posters on here have Wilson out the door. To me he showed what a lethal combination we can have driving us into attack.
I suppose the difference is that is the best we have seen Wilson play for a long time, and it was just or marginally better than Clark's first game for us. I'd struggle to have him replace Chapman, Young or Logue and I think Clark is the better player.

Competition for spots is always welcome though and hopefully Wilson keeps pushing for selection

It’s going to be interesting to see what happens this week.
simpson will put some work into how we moved the ball through the middle.
Clark, Wilson, Chapman and young moved the ball at speed linking nicely with Serong, Brayshaw, Brodie and Crowden.
I want to see what happens when the veterans come back this week.
we are going to lose some speed
Henry, O’Driscoll and Acres worked the wing area very well
we seemed to maintain the depth in the forward line, and used Freddy and Colyer as the overlapping half forward/wing.
freddy was maintaining a position wide of the wingman, and when we won possession he would take off and be the extra.
we maintained good width that way

I know he was out of favour at the end of last year. I’d be surprised if he started. When he is on he is very damaging. Hopefully competition for spots gives him a kick up the arse.

Not Ryan. He'd be in the 1st half dozen picked including for the reason of being able to kick the ball well.

hmmm, Luke isn’t a great kick and he tends to hoof the ball with a big loop…he’s also a bit slow…almost Hughes-like

I rated their games as similar in quality (caveat being it's a scratchie and an ordinary presentation). But it still seems to me That even if Clark was the preferred option Wilson is in very good squad member.

I subscribe to the thinking that he was definitely dealing with some issues last season. Good to see him ready to fire this year.

He’s just as slow as Hughes to move the ball half the time. Only real difference a lot of the time is he’s bombing it 10m further. It’s a shame because he’s naturally one of the best kicks on the list.

There’s a group of 6-7 players on our list that seem almost completely immune to criticism but they 100% have their weaknesses too, often the same ones people constantly criticise their so called whipping boys for.

People realise that if these players improve we will become a better side right? It’s not all about natural improvement from 18-23 year olds and nailing the game plan. Ryan’s weakness is 100% not moving the ball quick enough. Just because he does literally everything else well and is one of our better players doesn’t mean he should be immune to any criticism whatsoever.

Freo currently is almost as exciting as a hot meat pie to Hase...

David King giving us some love as well...

With the game plan we put on show on Friday, I reckon Ryan will be encouraged to speed up his decision making. Clark and Young will be nipping around providing options and the stagnant ‘kick it down the line to a pack’ tactic will be used at a bare minimum.

I thought Clark had a really good first game, but I can't say he was better than Wilson. Some powerful running and kicking from the pair.

The difference in that match was Clarks willingness to back himself in kicking for goal. The self confidence to stop and nail a set shot from outside the 50 was inspiring. Wilson rarely, if ever, does that. He would rather play his defensive running role and let the forwards take responsibility for set shots. So for mine, Clark is potentially the more complete player.

Having said that, I rate Wilson and his value his experience. But it is always good when a player that would previously just assume that they will get a game each week, has to actually compete for a spot. He will be better for it.

Or y'know, we could play both with Clark on the wing ;)

There’s so much bad stuff there from WC & obviously good stuff from us, but if you get the chance have a look at the last goal of the game by Freddy.

Basic front & square by Freddy as his direct opponent ball watches & gives him A1 position.

If I’m a coach at WC & was reviewing this game to present to the players, I’d be 10 minutes into the first quarter still after 3 days.

It as incredible.

Can see now, why the club were keen to try and get a match against someone else.

Interesting you say that because I was talking about it during the game how Wilson will always try and get the handball from the guy who marked outside 50 and go for goal himself instead. Think he's only kicked behinds from those instances. Not really set shots, but he definitely backs himself in for a shot on goal from outside 50.

I was thinking the same thing, Willo backs himself for the hand pass goal from outside 50....he just never scores a goal from them. On a side note our best team next year might have both Willo and Clark off half back it worked pretty well in the pre-season game, but who do you drop to get them both in???
