I think the biggest question most have is where do the goals come from? Going on last year, you have to kick AT LEAST 270 goals in the season to make finals. It's going to take a team approach to get there

From our first choice 7
Tabs - 45
Freddy - 30
Walters - 30
Schultz- 25
Switta - 25
Lobb - 20
Treacy - 20

I reckon this is close to a best case realistic scenario going on history, that means we need close to 80 goals from everyone else. I think that's possible through a combination of others rolling through there and the midfield kicking 2 goals a game between them
Sturt - 80

If Fyfe has truly worked on his goalkicking as reported, then you can pencil in a fair chunk from him.

Not a bad assessment, I think across the 3-4 'small forward' roles the numbers are about right, that ~20 goal range even if I have a slightly different view on the split between individuals.

Lobb / Treacy are the two I think that could lift their output quite easily with the right connection.
Lobb I really expect more, he's got the tools and we should have the opportunities, so he should be pushing 30-40 if he's playing a decent amount of games.
Treacy I would characterise as that third tall role, which could include Sturt/Amiss at some point in the season, and between those guys they have the capacity to easily average 1-2 goals a game.

With the way our midfield is looking ~4 goals per game from them (and the running backs) should be very achievable on average.
I still have question marks on how effective our forward line will be, but I'd back the team to be giving us enough opportunities that we should be able to score enough to be there and abouts.

I feel the pre-season game was a bit of an outlier into what we can expect from Freddy in a purely Goals kicked way. What we will see from him though is a lot more goals created from turnovers inside/around 50. I also think if Treacy develops even a modicum of confidence I wouldn't put it past him to kick 30-35 this season. Lobb also ideally should be in he 25-30 bracket as well (Tabs maybe 40-45).

With Switta, Freddy and Treacy applying defensive pressure I see a lot of goals coming from Schultz, Walters and high pressing midfielders.

All this is purely speculative but if we were to be the quality of a finals team this is how I'd see the breakdown of goals occuring.

I'm bullish on Freddy. He was getting 3-4 shots on goal consistently before his injury but fluffing the kick. I think if he's fixed his accuracy up, 30 goals should be the minimum he aims for. With our fast movement, his speed and endurance, he'll kick a lot of goals running on the fast break into an open goal square.

Historically speaking, 30+ goals from a 2nd year forward is pretty rare, but maybe I've just always been a touch lower on Treacy's goal kicking ceiling then most others on here

Please for the love of God announce the team for Sunday today. I need to know if Erasmus is playing...
How speculative are you expecting Sunday's team to be as an indication of round 1?

By not having Erasmus in the first scratchie it is a bit awkward. Lots of players put their hands up in that game.

I like to think that given I THINK they are playing 26 players and that they probably pretty much know their preferred 22 anyway for round 1, giving Erasmus a game is a good reward for a strong preseason and response to last weeks disappointment. I have prepared myself for disappointment

JLo said that Amiss was going to play in the second scratchie right?

He's been working on his goal kicking for years though. Hopefully the technique he's adopted this preseason actually works.
Seems to havbe been much more of a focus for him this year though that he's worked on it enough that it's come up in our training reports. I'm hoping he's had the penny drop after a few of those shambolic returns last year.

I'm not wanting a first round debut. It's an away game, and we have options that have slams for a game.
Oh, I'm not expecting a actual AFL debut any time, just some game time in the preseason match.

If everything is going well, it should be very very hard for Ras to get a proper debut the first month at least

It's also that O'Driscoll has a had a good preseason and both those guys may be considered for a similar role.

Ah, the old lull into a false sense of security trick. Sit him down, pass him the bong, laugh at all his jokes, but when you get to the party, drink his booze, shag his missus and leave him at the bottom of the garden, talking to the birdbath.

I cannot believe West Coast's best hope is a doughy Freo reject who wouldn't work in an iron lung.

It's Bizarro World.
