HBF is just a really good area to develop players IMO. Has a good blend of defensive and attacking play. Allows players to run without needing the endurance of a mid, get a decent amount of both uncontested and contested ball, ect. Really is a vanilla role that could be played by any player in the team and allows the player to develop their own game. Once they've got a feel for the game they can be moved into a more specialized area.

Don't disagree with that and if Chapman was struggling to produce (as Henry is) it would be a strong point. Endurance was always highlighted as a strength for Chapman so doubt if that's an issue.

I'd personally love to see Walker developing in the HBF. he has shown something at AFL level but now will do that in the wafl.

Seriously? That is about as nothing an article as you can get. He was drafted as a player with AFL level potential just as Fyfe, Pavlich, Mundy and Erasmus were.
So it’s ok for you to show me another posters post on what Chapman apparently said recently, but I can’t show you something from the club saying he’d been playing defence for 2 years prior to being drafted despite you saying it was new to him?
Fair enough.

As a wing Chapman will be defending too, we just get the benefit of his speed and skill punching into the forward 50 too.

Imagine him playing on the jaw breaker. Has him for speed, height and agility
Those angular elbows of his would be at an interesting height in that match up.

Did I say you can't show me that?

I hereby give you permission to do whatever you like.

Did I say playing hbf was new to him? Many draftees have played hbf.

Yep

“According to Chapman playing hbf-er is new to him. Why are we trying to turn him into one?”

It doesn't matter how good Chapman is, he will need to play a full season down back before we even consider moving him. Don't forget he has only played 6 games and needs the experience to gain confidence and learn from his mistakes. It worked for Mundy and Cez.

Chapman could be a match winner in the mould of James Hird, the way he is projecting. But it'll take time and luck.

Im loving the chatter about Chapman. He was probably the most "under the radar" player of our rebuild, but has shot up due to being composed, skilled, fierce at the contest and a good fellow outside of football.

If he keeps on plugging away there's no reason why he can't be top 3 In the rising star.

He reminds me of a young Scott Thornton.

Hope he goes better than Thornton. That is a low bar.

Quoting just for the last line.... bahahaa

He's definitely exciting, but the main point for me concerns our list management and development.

If Chapman was our only option at hbf or defence generally and if other areas of the ground weren't struggling, no problem. But we have over capitalised in that area and seem keen to double down on it at every opportunity.

In the meantime our wings and forward line are passable at best, and until Erasmus and Johnson come online our midfield is a work in progress with our two best in decline.

We have so many HBFs we could dispense with a permanent winger altogether and just rotate all of Clark, Young, Chapman, Wilson and Walker between HBF and wing. It would mean none of them need to be Uber fit to run hard all day and gives us plenty of options to get out backline matchups right.
Playing Young on Liam Ryan wasn’t the right match but was required after Wilson was injured.

Not true, they would have been happy if we let them take him, or else they wouldn't have bid at all.
Nah they basically bid on him cause they knew Freo were going to match and they wanted to buy time to find someone to trade down their draft pick for. They had wanted either Young or Serong but both were gone before their first pick so they moved down the order. If that sounds dumb then maybe its because Carlton are dumb. Especially since Pickett was still available.

It definitely provides an opportunity to create an innovative game style.

I just don't see why we'd rush moving Chapman out of a position he seems really comfortable in just to fill a glaring hole?

No question our wing spots have big question marks on them but we also have a shit load of options coming through and I'd prefer we try them all out first to see if we strike gold. I'd bet Johnson will start his career on a wing - will be like a young Mundy on the wing imo. Worner is obviously a winger but a long shot to make it off the rookie list. No doubt O'Driscoll debuts on a wing (even if he thinks he is a HBFer) - this guy will give 100% always. I said last week we have to persist with Henry because he has all the tools - just needs the mindset to match. Acres is an inconsistent git - if only he could be relied upon week in week out he'd be a pretty good option. Aish was one of the best i50 kicks early last year - flexibility to play HBF but is generally solid on a wing. Tucker at full fitness is dangerous on the wing with stints through the middle - unfortunately he is rarely at full fitness :( I'm guessing we'll also see Mundy and Walters on the wing occasionally this year - who are obviously two of our best kicks and generally use the ball well. Left field but both Fyfe and Sturt would be hard to contain on a wing also. How do you stop Fyfe in space? And Sturt is quick and can kick 70m with ease. Frederick, like Sturt, wouldn't look lost rotating half forward to a wing either. I'll put Western in the mix as well, as he was one of the best in a u18 All Stars game playing on the wing as a 17yo. Colyer also played wing a bit last season but prefer trialling other options personally.

That's a lot of options - unfortunately the vast majority of them have had interrupted pre-seasons this year so we haven't really gotten to see them in the intraclubs and pre-season games.

When you are picking 3 starting mids, 2 wingers, 2 on the bench and maybe a couple of half forwards who can rotate into the midfield, there are only so many spots. Chapman could very well be utilised up the field in time but the defenders are forming a really close knit group so I wouldn't **** with that for the moment.
