Training report - Match sim 28/01 (1 of 3)
Preseason Report #6

Nearly did not bother with this report due to the other great reports of today’s training. There will be duplication of other reports but this is how I saw it:

Rehab
Had a close look at the rehab today
Benning did very little
Johnson was on the boundary with crutches
I was wondering what the applause was for and guess it must have been for Valente’s retirement
Fyfe, Tabs and Mundy sprinting and must be close
Amiss looks fine and running strongly and close to main group return
Tracey moving better and doing more (trainer said to him that his drills were so much better than Monday) perhaps at last he is on the improve?
He was leading from full foward to kicks from Fyfe and the trainer only allowed him to run at 70%
Fyfe is having endless shots on goal his kicking is already vastly improved, a small bonus to his injury?
Tabs and Fyfe practicing marking above theirs heads with no issue.
I cannot believe that Fyfe appears to have no issues marking above his head already- remarkable!
I have no idea when Fyfe can return to contact drills but when he returns he looks like he will be as good as ever

Match Sim
Purple v Yellow again
Wing positions changed but mainly Frederick, Acres, Henry and Serong
Midfield changed but mainly Meek, Darcy, Brayshaw, Erasmus, Brodie, O’Driscoll, Tucker, Blakely.
Meek had good moments in the ruck and marking in the forward line.
Western was very noticeable in this match sim with lots of run and linkage play a real step up for him.
Cox as mentioned before in other reports was clearly the standout forward with strong marking and kicking for goal.
A highlight for me was when Lobb marked the ball 45m out slight angle, Sonny was 10m away roasting him and chanting snap it Lobby snap it (instead of just kicking the normal drop punt) Sonny played the perfect role of an opposition player - Lobb eventually just kicked the normal drop punt but missed.
Chapman was the winner of the hanger mark of the day
Tucker strong through the middle and finished with a couple of goals.
Shultz crumbed a couple and competed well.
Lovely snap by Clark brought applause from the playing group.
Switta caught a lot of players with his desperation.
Hamling was smashed in the contest a couple of times and left the field, not sure if there was any issue.
The match sim had proper umpires and was a noticeable step up in performance by all players

Disappointing
A lot of points still being kicked.
Valente announcing his retirement but hardly surprising and perhaps we can find a gem out there that deserves a chance ( wouldn’t mind giving the aboriginal boy from Peel a run).
Sturt can’t get near the ball in match sim.

TTHD
Cox and Tucker looking on top of their games. Special mention to Western for making a real impression in the match sim.

Training report - Match sim 28/01 (2 of 3)
My training notes are below:
Josh and jye in rehab with Roy - running laps and kicking with trainers.

Match Sim Q1
Blakely 1st possession out of the middle - shocking kick across the ground results in turnover. He later coped a bake from Logue for letting Brayshaw get loose twice, both times resulting in deep F50 entries.
Cox starting forward in match sim opposed to hamling. Got a Joe the goose goal from Shultz after a good marking contest.
Tabs, Mundy running laps with Fyfe, Treach and Amiss during Sims.
Henry on the wing did some nice things early. Tucker active on other wing/on ball.
Erasmus couple of nice things
Schultz awesome 1-1 vs Logue and another Joe the goose to Cox.
Clark kick out intercepted by Lobb who went back from 50m and drilled it.

Q2
Freddy v fast in f50 - 2 goals
Will Brodie smashed Henry in the middle in 1 contest resulting in free kick. He certainly doesn't mind the in and under stuff and looks to get hands free every time.
Freddy and Luke Ryan 1-1 in f50. Luke laughing and corralling did the job and Freddy missed his 3rd goal.
Meek nice mark at full forward and goal.
Nice goal by Schultz from free kick after the siren to end second quarter. JLo didn't appear to be happy with yellow group and called them in, whilst purple group headed inside.

Q3
Walker off and doing runs with trainer in second half - doesn't appear to be anything wrong.
Cox roved off marking contest set up beautifully by Henry and put it on the boot and sailed through for his 3rd goal.
Sonny couple nice things in 2nd half playing more on ball.
Tucker goal set up by Henry.
Cox contested mark opposed to hamling, set up by a beautiful Wilson kick. Kicks his 4th goal.

Q4
O'Driscoll playing midfield, looked a little lost at times and wanted to go sideways which in the last earnt him a big bake from Sonny.
Nice rundown by Schultz earnt western a goal from the advantage. Western has shown little glimpses today.
Darcy Tucker second goal from 50m on the run caused by turnover.
Sturt unfortunately invisible and beaten by Wilson all day.
Beautiful mark by Tucker sets up play resulting in Cox getting it , kicking to Schultz in the pocket who centres to Sonny - goal. Purple destroying yellow.
Fredrick kicks his 3rd for yellow off a snap from approx 35m.
Clark, a little quiet snapped great goal on the left.
Cox a little sore after marking contest and hobbling, but looks to be ok.

Interesting umpires doing warm down lap talking to each other saying that Freo had alot more spring in their step as opposed to WCE. This might be because we are younger and more enthusiastic or might be because the eagles are old and suck - I'm choosing the latter.

That's all from me.

Training report - Match sim 28/01 (3 of 3)
You guys are being spoiled today with multiple training reports! Don't believe anything you read in The West today either, the press left before match sim started. Probably had to get to Lathlain...

Piggy's Report below:

I got to training just as the boys were starting to head out onto the track. Fyfe, Mundy and Taberner were doing some forward craft work with Jamie Graham at the goals where my old man and I were standing. Fyfe was practicing losing his man and getting out the back to take marks in goal scoring positions. Mundy was providing the kicks and Taberner was sort of just drifting around being an aerial presence but not really going for many marks. They then did a bit of practice where Fyfe and Mundy were getting front and square and hitting the ball at pace, Tabs was knocking it down and they were taking a quick snap at goal. Fyfe could not miss. He also looks in very good nick, whoever says he has lost some size should get down and see him in the flesh, he looks amazing for a bloke that couldn't train for months.

I initially thought Sturt was not on the track but I asked a team official on the boundary and he informed me that he had misplaced his Number 1 and was wearing 44. I am not sure who the team official was but he was a middle aged bloke in absolutely ridiculous physical condition. He says that Phil Merriman has being doing a lot of work on the running mechanics of the players and strongly believes that he can reverse our soft tissue injury fortunes by teaching the boys how to run properly. This gentleman also said that the boys are in far superior physical fitness than he's ever seen them at this stage of pre-season and that the club are very bullish that some of these young boys are going to transform our forward line. I don't know why, but I thought to myself 'Erasmus is playing round 1' after I heard that.

Rehab group was very small with Amiss, Treacy and Benning only running laps and not taking part in any ball work. Fyfe and Mundy also didn't take part in the match sim. I was taking phone calls for work in between watching so rather than give a blow by blow run down of the training as has been done already, i will focus on some players who have been the topic of some robust conversations in recent weeks.

Will Brodie: This guy can seriously get his hands free and get a handball out. He spent a fair bit of time running with Brayshaw and held his own well, albeit with the advantage of having big Darcy as his ruckman. Attacked the ground ball well and didn't let the opposition get a lot of easy clearances.

Sam Sturt: Sam is really lacking in his match awareness and touch. He struggled to get involved, I am not sure if he actually touched the ball. As mentioned earlier he was looking very dejected and although I gave him some encouragement about just being out there this time of year I can tell he's desperate to get involved. Hopefully by March he will be ready to go but he seems a long way off at this point in time.

NOD - This guys hits ground balls like a kamikaze pilot. He is looking bigger, stronger, fitter and just damn better than he did last year. He has a good tank too. He must be close to next in line for a debut with only maybe Erasmus ahead of him.

Liam Henry - Did some really nice things, got plenty of the ball and looked his best when in a bit of space and turning back towards goals. He has to play up the ground this year, he is not a small forward. My dad was most impressed with him out of the lot today.

Darcy Tucker - Fought hard and was involved in a lot of play. I wish he had a right foot as he got into trouble trying to get onto his left a couple of times but he's no orphan there, I can';t believe how many AFL players can't kick opposite foot. Even I could when i played colts for Gozzy, it musn't be trained like it used to be when i was young. Chapman was guilty of this pretty glaringly as well on one occasion that I can recall.

Speaking of Young - Hayden Young. Took some strong intercept marks and hit some nice targets. He went off for a little bit to see the trainers but didn't look like he was in any difficulty finishing the session.

As for the usual suspects - Serong worked hard sometimes head to head with Brayshaw but mainly just working on the ball without a close checking opponent. He got a lot of ball in the back half but set up some good play. Brayshaw did Brayshaw things and worked hard accumulating. Lobb was a good aerial presence and took some good clunks. Pearce was solid in defence.

As reported by pretty much all watchers today, Brennan Cox was the standout. He kicked 3 or 4 goals (pretty sure Logue was on him for most of it) and every time he went near it something happened. He crumbed a pack front and square and snapped a goal in traffic from about 25 out in front, took some really nice marks and used it really well. Not sure if we are going back to the future this year but I've always liked him as a forward out of all of our defenders and today reinforced that belief in my mind.

i wish I could report on Erasmus but TBH I didn't notice him much. Although as a first year player he is doing well to look right in place and not stand out for the wrong reasons.

Well that's all I can think of for now, hit me up if you want me to try and answer any specific questions.

Training report - Match sim 02/02
I went to training this morning and watched a long match sim. I sat in the outer where there is now some grass on the slope and some small gum trees. It was very pleasant, if somewhat windy.

It is quite hard to pick up the players as many are in caps, have new haircuts etc, but I will do my best.

2 teams, purple and white. Purple seemed to have more of the best 22, with a starting midfield of our Sean, Caleb and, I think, Andy, although Andy swapped to white part way thru. Purple had Tabs, Lobb, Sonny and Sturt up forward so a significant part of a starting forward line.

At the time that I left things were close to equal on the scoreboard.

Caleb was the dominant midfielder on the ground. Brodie did a couple of nice things, including a good goal and looked serviceable. Meek in white held his own against our Sean and drifted forward to kick a goal. Switta had some good moments. Erasmus got a bit of the ball and looked okay. Western kicked a couple of goals and looked lively. Sonny looked fit and moved well. Connor kicked a long goal but had little of the ball other than that. Tucker got a bit of the ball, and looked reasonable.

Alex played on Tabs and Tabs looked quite good early. Tabs ran laps later in the match sim, looked fine, just management I would think. Rory rolled his ankle or something and did not come out for the last stanza (I left about that time). Brennan played back much to my disappointment.

No sign of Fyfe. Mundy, Treacy and Amiss in the rehab group.

On balance I would say there was a focus on quick ball movement and skills were ordinary in quite windy conditions.

Fremantle recruit Will Brodie looks bound for an early season opportunity at AFL level after a strong performance midfield in a hard fought practice match at Cockburn on Wednesday morning.
Brodie kicked two critical goals from the midfield as his White team fought of the Purple team’s down breeze finish to win by a point over four twenty minute quarters which were interrupted by a time out halfway through each.
Blustery conditions at Cockburn meant the game was frequently scrappy but the big bodied Brodie’s performance as Andrew Brayshaw’s main support for White was an eye catcher.

In the dying seconds of the game he also won several critical contested possessions to deny Purple late chances to attack.
Brodie, 23, the ninth player taken overall in the 2016 national draft, left the Suns for greater opportunity at the end of the 2021 season after playing 25 games over five seasons. Gold Coast had sought to progress the careers of blue chip youngsters like Matt Rowell and Noah Anderson in their midfield and Brodie played just five games in 2021 as a result.

The Dockers received Brodie and the pivotal number 19 selection in the draft that netted Matt Johnson in exchange for swapping a future second and fourth round pick for two future fourth round picks.
Lloyd Meek, who also played for the White team, had the better of the ruck duel against a trimmed down Sean Darcy early before Darcy fought back after half time. Meek took several marks around the ground and got forward for a goal after a contested mark and goal before Darcy’s stoppage work got Purple rolling after half time.
Joel Hamling missed the game for personal reasons to attend to a family matter but even without him the match highlighted the Dockers defensive riches. At one end Hayden Young, Heath Chapman, Griffin Logue and Luke Ryan held the fort for Purple while at the other end Alex Pearce, Jordan Clark, Brennan Cox, Nathan Wilson and Brandon Walker. James Aish was also absent nursing some achilles tendon soreness.
Other good signs for the Dockers were Sam Sturt who played for Purple and led positively to kick two goals in his first match practice of the pre-season. Forward Matt Taberner also got through two quarters of game time and took a strong contested mark in the opening term.
Meanwhile captain Nathan Fyfe and veteran David Mundy continue to train away from the main group, although Fyfe ran very powerfully and looks to be in good shape to resume full training when the club declares him ready for full body contact.

Training Report - 09/02
Was hoping to watch more match Sim today, but not to be. The entire session was all skills based with focus on mids training midfield drills, same for defenders and forwards. Couple of other drills mixed players into different groups. Main takeaways:
1. Mundy and Fyfe in all drills, with Fyfe looking a little rusty today.
2. Brodie, Aish, Sunny, Schultz running laps separately from the main group but all look to have only minor issues.
3. Roy completing drills on his own with 2 trainers and both he and Amiss are certainly being treated carefully - neither appear injured.
4. Treacy in main training doing all drills.
5. Sturt with tape on left knee and not running at top pace, however it was good to see lecras and Graham working 1-1 with him on some leading drills. In these drills Sturt's movements were much improved, but he didn't partake in all drills.
I hope to get there on Friday and report back on some match sim.

Training report - 11/02 (rehab session)
Rehab Report

As previously outlined it was mainly a rehab session today.

The major rehab group
Benning is still the player who is most restricted and again did very little work.
Walters has a left hamstring injury which must be of a minor nature as he trained furiously and boxed to the point of exhaustion, he only kicked on his right foot however. The trainer said it will be a massive year for Sonny ( I agree he has been the hardest trainer all preseason)
Will Brodie is restricted by what looks like a hamstring injury as well but is able to do some work.

Minor Rehab Group
Amiss, Treacy, Fyfe and Aish working at full capacity.

I have spotted a major bromance developing between Treacy and Amiss they train and follow each other around for their entire sessions.

I am really pleased that Treacy has now moved into full capacity after being so restricted for so long.

Loved watching Fyfe and Aish kicking to the leading pair of Amiss and Treacy for an extended period of time.

I expect to see Treacy, Amiss, Fyfe and Aish in full training very shortly.

Other players came out for a minor kick around including Chapman, Clark, Pearce, Cox, Walker, Logue, Ryan, Wilson, Hamling (great to see that he is able to do extra). Schultz, Frederick, Clark, Lobb and Sturt (no strapping) came out last for some kicking on goal exercises.

looking forward to the match sim tomorrow, I presume at Cockburn.

Training report 12/02 - Match Sim
The match sim, has just finished, purple came out on top.

Who looked good today.. Logue, Chappo, crowden, Erasmus, Serong, Acres.

What didn’t look good was forward entries.

On the side lines. Fyfe, Brodie, Walters, didn’t see Darcy so assume he was as well. So bit of talent to come back in.

Liam needs to get his Mojo back looked pretty flat.

Training report - 15/02
Went down and had a quick look at training today in pretty warm conditions. Lots of match sim work with big numbers on the track and impressive skills display by a number of players.

Aish, Big Kahuna, Walker, Fyfe , Mundy, Amiss and Sturt all participating in all exercises and match sim. Worner also making an appearance and didn’t look out of place, couple of solid tackles and one 40 metre pass to lobb through traffic was insane. Anyways looks an athlete and can football-quick and deceptively tall -a lot to like.other random thoughts on players.

Fyfe-great to see him out there although a little rusty with some ordinary kicking but will obviously improve.

Mundy -resumed training seamlessly-linked up nicely with Liam Henry a couple of times and looks set to play a prominent role again this year. Serong looks like he will go to another level this year -was in everything, very vocal and some tidy disposals. Brayshaw always gives a 110%, has improved disposal by the looks and tackles with intent.

The backline is going to be impossible to pick with a number of standouts-Clarke is in everything and his kicking will be a weapon, TTHD award for me. Close second would have to be Chapman-man this guy is gonna be a jet. Makes great decisions, reads the play well, great mark and even better kick-was slotting goals from outside fifty with ease. Liam Henry looks to have filled out big time and has a touch of magic-hopefully cements a spot this year. Tracey-great to see the big fella out there ,was moving well, couple of nice grabs in the match sim and strong tackling on display. Aish looked to be fully recovered and got involved. Frederick looks really fit and will have a good year I reckon. Walker trained really well with a number of beautiful lace out passes and speed to burn. Logie was solid and hard to see him not in the 22. Going to have a lot better depth this year with guys like Crowden, Hughes, Acres, Banfield, Weston, Meek waiting in the wings.

I have never seen Alex Pearce in better nick and he will make a huge difference if he can stay on the park-a real general down back. Erasmus continues to impress with his competiveness, ball use and dedication (along with Fyfe) the last off the track. Shultz in and out of training but mostly in!!looks fine.

Overall almost whole squad doing majority of drills. Rehab was sonny doing heaps of work, pretty sure been very conservative with him ,running at pace kicking over distance -no drama. Benning pumping out laps and no sign of Tucker.

Very light session at Cockburn today. My notes are as follows:

1. Mundy, Darcy, Schultz, Aish, Brodie and Fyfe in all drills.
2. Tabs and Treacy still on light drills.
3. Benning and Tucker running seperately and Sonny working 1-1 with trainer.
4. Great to see forwards kick to leading targets and at goals, whilst defenders completing drills kicking it out of back pocket onto half back flank. Heath Chapman looks exceptional in everything.
5. Cox looks super fit - any puppy fat is completely gone.
6. Karl wormer looks a neat unit - still a little slight but moves and kicks well.
7. Light session overall with Fyfe, Aish, Brodie, Amiss and Worner doing small drills at the end of the session, whilst the playing group headed back inside.
