Prediction 2023 GWS Giants - Predicted best 22, breakout player(s), general player/team discussion & questions

Our national broadcaster’s season summary in a couple of paragraphs after round 9. Was surprised that Kelly and Buckley were not mentioned in the list of our players having a good season.

It's been an interesting season so far for the Giants under new coach Adam Kingsley. The team has already won half as many games as they did in 2022, although after winning five quarters out of the first two games, GWS won just 10 quarters in the next seven matches.

Aside from the usual suspects like Toby Greene, Stephen Coniglio, Nick Haynes and Jesse Hogan, Tom Green is having a monster season and Finn Callaghan and recruit Xavier O'Halloran are becoming increasingly important — but making progress up the ladder will be hard.

Less surprising that Kelly and Buckley were overlooked for mention by a writer who describes XO as a recruit.

Brent Stormy Daniels is now my fav Giant! Massively underrated imho.
Playing higher up the ground in more of a half forward role is working. When he is thrown in the centre later in games has immediate impact. Should Stormy spends more time in the midfield?

This is from the ABC article on Harry Himmelberg (posted in the media thread, and his player thread). Thought the graphic was interesting, given where you can see Sam Taylor & Isaac Cumming:

Wow. Our backline talls are decimated ATM. Any chance we through Ricca back his week and bring in Derksen as a forward? I can't see an issue with that as I have no idea who else takes Hawkins

I haven't watched enough of the VFL games to see how Keeffe is moving at the moment, but he always worries me as not really flexible enough to take someone like Hawkins. Too much of a straight line runner IMHO. But, don't think Fleeton is big enough or experienced enough to combat him, and Haynes isn't really a 1-on-1 defender.

I'm of a view that Riccardi isn't really a great 1-on-1 defender either - when he got a lot of possessions in defence he was more in the Haynes-like intercepting role (IIRC). So, not really any good options for AK IMHO.

Any way you cut the team, though, I'd still like to see Derksen rewarded. He has also provided great secondary ruck service in VFL, so with HH out we can assess how he stands up at AFL level. I know Riccardi performed that role last game ... but I'm equivocal on having both Riccardi and Cadman up forward (even accounting Derksen would be on debut). It's also a case of thinking about longer term - if HH were to leave, can Derksen pick up a similar role?

Cogs calling Toby our GOAT.

For Coniglio, Cameron is the only player that can challenge Greene for the best the Giants have had.

"Jeremy is the most special talent I've played with, but the best Giant is Toby," he said.

"Whether that be now at the 200-game mark or when he retires, he'll be the greatest Giants player that's ever played for the club."

Ward is the other option.
He was top 3 in the first 7 or 8 bnfs

Whilst I believe Toby is our GOAT, Josh Kelly, who has won our best and fairest an equal highest twice and was an All Australian, is also a contender? And Sam Taylor and Tom Green may also challenge Toby’s GOAT status by the time they retire?

Giant Pete the Prophet!
I was at the game and the pressure around the ball was fantastic to see. I could name just about every player but want to point out how good Jack Buckley was. Made Jez really earn his possessions and goals.
One piece of play where he neutralised the contest, swooped back onto the ball, hand balled off and received then hit a player on the wing, was gold.
Him and Taylor, with that kind of pressure from the midfield…. Tantalising from a defensive perspective.

Callan Ward who at the start of the season was our only 200 game player, may have more company to join him and Toby in this exclusive 200 game club in 2023.

The next Giant (and third ever for our club) to reach the 200 games milestone this season will probably be Whitfield who is currently on 195 games. With all the usual caveats (no injuries, suspensions, being dropped etc), he should reach this milestone during our round 17 against Hawthorn at Giants Stadium.

There are 2 others who also have a chance to get to 200 games in 2023 - Nick Haynes (currently on 193 games) and Stephen Coniglio (188 games).

Showing the effects of injuries and suspensions, we have only had 6 players play all 11 games of the 2023 season: Coniglio, Callaghan, Hogan, Ash, Idun, Buckley.
4 of them are supposed to be injury concerns.

hard to believe but he hasn’t played 30 games yet - you just assume he’s a lot more experienced than that.

just think - Tanner Bruhn has played more games for the Giants than Jack Buckley has.

and that passage you described was the Moment of the Week with Dunstall singing his praises as Toby slotted the goal at the other end.

Cadman is in a battle to get one of the 13 Rising Star nominations left for the year. Callaghan has already got a nomination (round 7), but I think the 2023 Rising Star winner is essentially between Ashcroft and Sheezel.

Needs to start putting them through the big sticks. No doubt it will come.

Champion Data’s mid season All Australian team has two Giants. This is supposed to be based only on data and our representatives are Toby and Brent Daniels. Very pleased for the underrated Brent

Dustin Martin is on one half-forward flank and the other was awarded to Jack Macrae, the highest rated mid-forward in the comp under Champion Data’s ratings.

Daniher is flanked by two GWS small forwards, Toby Green and Brent Daniels, who rates elite for disposals, forward-50 ground balls, score assists and forward-half pressure this season.

The top 20 standout moments of the AFL season so far from an AFL website - we have 3 of the highlights: Himmelberg’s mark vs Adelaide is number 14; Toby’s winner vs Swans is number 3; and number 2 is Himmelberg’s performance in the last couple of minutes vs Hawthorn.

Nice article on Brent Daniels in the AFL website. Not many people would have known about Brent at the start of the season, but they are certainly taking notice. And he’s signed with us at least until 2025.

THE ADAM Kingsley era may still be in its infancy at GWS but its No.1 player success story to date is the emergence of Brent Daniels as one of the AFL's premier small forwards.

The pint-sized dynamo may have been a fair way down the list of the Giants' forward threats at the start of the campaign but at the midway point, he has materialised into one of their most menacing.

I think most Giants fans understood how good Binga could be if he shook off his injury issues and could get a consistent block of games. So, it's no surprise but immensely satisfying to see how this season has unfolded.
A good example also of someone that has struggled to finish off his work at times but appears to have put that behind him.
