Kieren Briggs (GWS)

“Kieren Briggs got zero votes on the weekend from the coaches, but he was the third highest rated player on the ground (against Fremantle). I just want to put it into context what Kieren Briggs has actually done in his five-game sample size.”

“He's been a top-three rated player in each of the five games he's played this year. We've only seen 31 players since 2010, be a top-three rated player on the ground in five straight matches.”

“We've only seen two ruckmen previously do it. The two ruckmen previously, Max Gawn and Nic Naitanui, two of the best ruckmen that we've seen over the last 10 years.”

I hope the list manager has got a fresh new contract in front of him.

He has been a bit like mummy in that his presence has elevated the level that the other mids are playing around him

Least frees for

1 - GWS (206)
2 - Hawthorn (228)
3 - Richmond (228)
4 - Essendon (231)
5 - North Melbourne (240)

Least frees against

1 - GWS (214)
2 - Essendon (223)
3 - Brisbane (231)
4 - St Kilda (232)
5 - Fremantle (236)

So what do we take from those stats? That GWS is actually a disciplined team, we don't give a lot of frees away. But also that we get no favours from the umps. Lowest frees for by 10%. That matches what I see on-field regularly!

Sadly, Frees For would be impacted by the lack of crowd noise at Giants home games.

Interesting story from SEN, and the approach they've taken:

At SEN, we don’t mind a list and a ranking, so have gone about creating our own type of ratings system based on statistics.

First cab off the rank are the forwards/attackers. Kicking goals is the most important part of the game, but we can’t forget those who help set them up and provide the regular goal kickers with scoring opportunities. In a bid to find out who is the most well-rounded forward (or attacker), we’ve put together a stats-based ratings system, weighting each of six categories that relate to scoring, and putting them up against the stats and dividing that number by the amount of matches played.

The points for the rankings have been weighted as follows:
  • 6 points per goal
  • 4 points per goal assist
  • 3 points per mark inside 50
  • 3 points per tackle inside 50
  • 2 points per score involvement
  • 1.5 points per inside 50
  • 1 point per behind
To be eligible, players must have played at least half the matches for the season, making the threshold seven at this point of the campaign.

GWS captain Toby Greene rates on top due to his all-round ability both inside and outside attacking 50. Greene has kicked 36 goals (ranked 5th in the AFL), has provided 14 goal assists (ranked equal 6th) and 101 score involvements (ranked 6th), while he also ranks in the top 20 for tackles inside 50, and inside the top 30 for marks inside 50 and inside 50s.

The Giants star is almost five ratings points clear of Carlton’s reigning Coleman Medallist Charlie Curnow who is three ahead of Hawthorn’s Mitch Lewis.

See the Top 20 below:

1 - Toby Greene (GWS): 58.4
2 - Charlie Curnow (CAR): 54.9
3 - Mitch Lewis (HAW): 51.25
4 - Jeremy Cameron (GEE): 51.21
5 - Taylor Walker (ADE): 50.9
6 - Tom Hawkins (GEE): 49.3
7 - Jeremy Finlayson (PA): 44.7
8 - Christian Petracca (MEL): 44.1
9 - Joe Daniher (BRI): 43.9
10 - Bayley Fritsch (MEL): 43.1

Great write up!
TFG is just a superstar, has the most influence / disposal than anyone in the comp. He’s starting to finally get some love in the media, listen to SEN most days and enjoying the media and callers rating him so highly. We love him, he’s the GOAT [emoji238]

Just quietly… his next ten weeks will be something else..

GWS went to Geelong on May 27 as rank AFL underdogs and returned a side transformed.

Their seven-point shock win in round 11, in captain Toby Greene's 200th game, is proving the spark for a surge that has put the Giants only a game and percentage outside the top eight. They have won four of their last five, claiming another major scalp on Sunday when they beat Melbourne by two points despite eight less scoring shots.

Asked what had turned the Giants around, coach Adam Kingsley pointed to the Geelong game. They were 3-7 and took a three-game losing streak into that match, but set the standard against the Cats that reignited their season. "I felt the Geelong game was, not the turning point, but it was where we found our level, I thought - around tackle and pressure and all that sort of hard stuff," Kingsley said. "That was the game that was our best up to that point and that, in my mind, set the standard. "Whether we've been quite at that level each and every week, we've been thereabouts and that's been the major driver around our performances in the last four or five weeks."

GIANTS coach Adam Kingsley has hailed the bond and selflessness of his role-playing forwards as a key reason for the GIANTS' surge up the ladder over the past five weeks. And while their stars have been shining as per usual over that time, it's the previously unheralded forward line group of Toby Bedford, Brent Daniels, Xavier O'Halloran, Daniel Lloyd and Callum Brown that have built the platform in attack for the GIANTS to flourish. That was underlined by Bedford's courageous contest and tackle – one of his seven for the game – in the dying moments of the triumph over the Demons on the weekend.

It means we didn’t have an umpire for a game

Another consistent player, who is progressing well and will be part of a future premiership team

And right now, those other young guns, along with everyone else in the competition, would be keeping strong tabs on Callaghan and the Giants.

They're one of the buzz teams of the AFL at present and with Callaghan averaging 24 disposals over that time in a system that is well and truly clicking, he's helping lead a charge towards September.

"I never really understood what a true system meant previously, but it's been really clear with 'Kingers' (coach Adam Kingsley) straight away, that everyone on the team has a role we all have to execute.

Cogs is just crushing it - one of the reasons we are currently in contention for the finals this season.

Good on him and glad we have him.

Especially after seeing this article from last year that suggested he should have been let go from the Giants - Stephen Coniglio’s $7m mega deal ‘destroyed’ GWS Giants

Edit: Orange crush seems to have beat me to it.

Terrific season.
I'm guessing he'd be leading the BNF
Given that the GWS B&F voting system rewards players who don't miss games, that's a reasonable view. Tom Green the other who'd be in good position having missed just one, while Toby Greene and Josh Kelly should be thereabouts but suffering from missing a few games.

Buckley will be up there too
Daniels the other pre injury who would have been polling well but of course would have dropped off.

Do any of you find it hilarious when ‘The Athlete’ Cal Brown does anything freakish?
There’s something about him that has me (and another mate) in stitches! Maybe it’s the super self confidence and the straight face saying yeah that’s me.
He’s so good to watch

Legit not surprised when he's the worst and best player out there. Love the confidence. He was tossing the ruckman around today and kicked a goal. What a jet.
