Time to reveal the final ladder, and our fan-voted Most Valuable Player for 2023.

Firstly, the "best of the rest", those players who finished outside the top 10. Definitely some up & comers in that band of players just outside the top 10: Connor Idun in 11th, Buckley just behind him, Bedford not too far away after missing a few games. All "role players" rather than out & out stars, but the kind of guys a team needs to be putting in week after week for a team to hit the top 8:

Next up is our top 10 - outside of the top 6. I don't think there's too many surprises here given the year these players had. Jesse Hogan is building nicely, and great to see him in our top 10. (If we can keep him at this level of even improving over the next few years - watch out for GWS!) Likewise, Binga is up there, and probably only missing a few games cost him higher. Both of these players had two Most Valuable Giant awards throughout the season. They were both well clear of 9th & 10th - Cal Ward having an evergreen year, while Lachie Whitfield started very slowly, but built throughout the year, playing his best games across the last part of the H&A season and into the finals - part of the reason for our resurgence and making finals:

OK, onto the main course, the top 6.

In sixth place, with an absolute rocket is:

Kieren Briggs - 6th.png

So, Briggsy, the Big Rig, didn't play a game until the tenth round, when he displaced Matt Flynn as first choice ruckman. He then proceed to score votes in 15 out of 17 games, with two of those being MVGs, and another 9 were top 6 results. Provided he can stay healthy for the 2024, he will be a massively important cog for GWS in seeking a top 8 (indeed, top 4) finish.

Check out his stats below. Outstanding for a big man.

5th place goes to ...

Sam Taylor - 5th.png

Sam Taylor had another impressive season; it was just unfortunate that he suffered two injuries that cut a chunk from it, which was the only thing that prevented him going back-to-back All Australian, and quite possibly a shot at back-to-back KSMs. His stats were the most impressive for KPDs this season:

4th place goes to ...

Josh Kelly - 4th.png

Josh Kelly had a very good season, although from fan-voting perspective it was a little up and down. He missed a few games through injury, but otherwise was outstanding through the first two thirds of the season, where GWS fans voted him Most Valuable Giant on no less than 5 occasions (which was the most for any player in 2023). However, he trailed off a bit later in the year ... although it could be argued that simply other players lifted and took votes off him. Nonetheless, an excellent year for Chook.

Now, the podium finishes. The fan-voted 3rd place finish is ...

[PLAYERCARD]Toby Greene[/PLAYERCARD] - 3rd.png

... our inspirational skipper, Toby Greene.

Statistically, Toby could hardly have had a better season. 4th in the Coleman behind three dominant KPFs, third in goal assists and score involvements, he led from the front all season long, and helped turn our season around to make finals. Fan-voting wise, he had an equal second 4 MVGs, and led for much of the year, but was run down in the final series as two other players made serious charges (voted 4 MVGs between them across the final 4 games GWS played!!!). Well done, Tobes.

2nd place in the fan-voted award goes to ...

Steve Coniglio - 2nd.png

Stephen Coniglio had a superb and consistent season, playing in all except one game (his best ever season). There were only 3 games played in which he didn't gather a vote (plus one game missed), and another 3 games in which he wasn't in the top 6 votes. He came home like a steam train, taking away two MVG and one 2nd-placed votes from the final 4 games (he didn't play in the EF) to snatch 2nd place from Toby Greene by just 4 votes ... but was pipped by a player who came home like a nuclear-powered train!

Overall, a fantastic season for Cogs, capped by selection in the All Australian squad.

Which leaves the winner of the fan-voted GWS Board Most Valuable Player of the Giants in 2023 as ...

Tom Green - 1st.png

You bet that Tom Green is pumped to win!

Selected in the All Australian squad for the first time, he was very unfortunate IMHO to miss the actual team. Missing two games to injury and one to suspension possibly cost him in that regards. In our fan-voted award, those missed games did cost him, trailing Toby Greene for much of the year, until an absolute purple patch from round 21 onwards. He scored 3 of his season's 4 MVG awards, plus 3 2nd-placed votes in those final 7 games; the 7th game being a mere 4th-placed vote. He's an absolute star, and had a brilliant season, and is a worthy winner of the GWS BF Board Most Valuable Player award for 2023.

So, here's the final voting collated in finishing order:

2023 GWS MVP Final Order.PNG

As you can see, being voted as first and second for a game really helps a lot. Over the year, these players were fan-voted as MVG:
  • Josh Kelly 5 times
  • Toby Greene, Stephen Coniglio & Tom Green 4 times each
  • Sam Taylor 3 times
  • Kieren Briggs, Jesse Hogan & Binga Daniels 2 times each
and they were also the top 8 in our voting over the length of the season. So a pretty consistent result.

Thanks for voting folks, hope you enjoyed being part of the experience (much better when we're winning and playing attractive football, I must admit). We'll do it all again next year!
