Would I be wrong in assuming we'd be wise to be looking at bringing in some young on ballers through the draft end of this season? Looking at our list we certainly don't have as many back up options in there as we once did with a few recent departures. Would be hard to bring in any mature agers as back up given they'd know AFL games are rather unlikely as long as our main quartet are all healthy.
If we manage to keep TDK I'd say we're only really 1 KPP player short for my liking, Himmelberg would be a perfect acquisition as he can play back or forward.

Stocker & Setterfield's career's from here will show how good Austin is.
Don't think it's as easy as that, as there are a multitude of factors
Someone like Setters was behind a number of inside mids, then contract status plays a major role
SOS too to some degree. He went pretty hard for both.

Agreed. Even if Setters or Stocker ended up quality players they'd have to elevate to absolute A graders for it to reflect poorly on our decision to move them on. Kennedy/Cerra are the 'worst' midfielders in our 22 we have and Williams/Newman our worst half backs. If either Setters or Stocker wanted to take their spots they'd just about have to be All Aus calibre given the quality of the players they'd be taking the spot of - which is pretty unlikely.
The cap space and list spots they free up means we can look for players and draftees that complement our quality players and surround them with the pieces we need to be successful. We have our core set in stone, right now we're just polishing the edges.

Liam Stocker was atrocious on the weekend and his fumbling lead to a massive stuff up in the goal Square .... And the easiest of scores to Christian Petracca

does everybody realise that Alex Mirkov is going to be a huge weapon for us.... Think of the improvement he's made In a mere 2 seasons ... And he's already a very good tap ruck & a decent kick ... And with incremental experience and specialist training he's going to be very special with the obvious height and athleticism [ for a big man] massive standout advantages
I have been a massive fan of what big Mirk can bring. I actually have some doubts now. I am not concerned by his skills or building his tank as wanting to see him more combative. A beanpole, but a big guy, needs to find/channel a bit of agro.
Jury still out. Superb “insurance policy” with Hudson O’Keeffe.

Agreed. Haven't seen much of him but looked timid in the contest. Thought TDK was good with this and clearly demonstrated his other capabilities on Friday.

Not really. If either/both of them succeed it’ll be because of them improving significantly from what they both showed during their time at Carlton.Yes Setters was played out of position for long periods of his time at Carlton by all his coaches but as a big bodied midfield Setters was well behind Cripps, Hewett, Kennedy and Cerra on output. It may be at a club with less competition for his spot, like Essendon, he gets more opportunity but I’d still rather all the blokes we have ahead of him.
As for Stocker it’s pretty clear he is never going to be fit enough to be an elite midfielder like he was in juniors. Even Ross Lyon didn’t play him midfield for a scratch match, although from the comfort of his Footy Classified vantage point advocated him playing midfield, when Cripps was provisionally suspended, in our last 2 games of last season. From what I saw Friday not much had changed from last year for Stocker. Poor positioning, over ambitious use of the ball and lack of run to be a small defender.
His kicking really nosedived from what was expected as a great kick.

I'm just going to add one thing to this, Setterfield could have been played in the midfield any time before Hewett and Cerra arrived. So, his output was never tested in the midfield.
Setterfield had plenty of time in the midfield along the way, initially as a pure mid before Hewett/Cerra (and before Kennedy improved enough to hold down his spot) and then afterwards as an injury replacement. He also tried on the wing and up forward, but never really locked down a slot.
My philosophy is that to be a successful AFL player you have to either be a great ball-winner, a great kick, or have scoreboard impact (goal-kicking or stopping). Setterfield didn't have any of those. He's not FAR off as a ballwinner - 24 and 26 touches in our must-win games vs Melbourne and Collingwood show that he can almost get there, but the issue is he doesn't get to 35 on a good day.
Same issue Dow has, really - if you aren't an elite kick (who team-mates can feed the ball) and you aren't hitting the scoreboard, you better be getting a heap of it as a midfielder or you aren't pulling your weight. Good luck to Setters at Essendon though, he'll get a shot there so hopefully he can take it.

Better off utilizing those funds on a player in a position of need.
