It's fine if you don't agree with the club
If the club is paying $500k??? for a spare mid to play VFL, then I don't agree.
Either play 'em or reduce their salary.(which is reportedly why Setters left)
I'm happy to give Dow games, as he at least offers a dynamic difference compared to our one paced mids.

Setterfield would still be in Navy Blue if Dow wasn't contracted

I’m not sure what Setters provides that is better than Cripps, Hewett, Kennedy or Cerra offer. Also I believe Essendon offered him overs so I’m happy not to overpay for someone who’s a 6th choice midfielder at our club.

At least with Dow I can see he has the burst run and carry away from a clearance to offer if he ever comes good. That said I think it’s becoming increasingly clear Dow isn’t going to make it and probably won’t be at the club this time next year.

Setters last two games were better than anything Dow has produced at AFL level. He would've been the perfect depth midfielder this year and with our luck probably plays 15+ games.

Should do well at Essendon for the next few years until some of their kids come on. And if he improves they'll have a very good player.

Burst? Not often. Run? Yeah a bit of that. Carry? No

In the glimpses Dow showed back in 2018 and 2019 he could burst away from a contest. Go back and look at some of his best highlights from that period, the game against Gold Coast in 2018, v Swans in round 3 2019 and when we played Hawthorn in Tassie in 2019. He was supposed to be out version of Dangerfield. The knock on him back then was his kicking.

That was 3 odd years ago. Having to build his endurance has reduced his ability to repeat sprint

His kicking is still inconsistent, inability to play another position but his biggest struggle is to gain possession or be involved in chains away from a stoppage

The problem is IMO at least that’s the version of him that we are missing and need him to be. In his current form I don’t see what value he adds to us.

sounds like you've all but given up on paddy making it in any substantial way, a-man........

Happy for Dow to get games in the seniors, provided he earns them on merit on performances and effort/workrate at training and in the VFL

Shouldn't be given games automatically cause obviously this is not only going to be his last chance saloon at our club but probably the AFL.

I really hope he can make it/cement his spot, but I get the impression Vossy and the current coaching staff and match committee don't have much faith in Paddy.

Time will tell, it always does.

Just hasn't improved on his deficiencies enough unfortunately
Unfortunately , another extremely poor choice, at a high cost, let's hope Paddy can miraculously revive, improve his efforts, time is on his side, someone must have seen ability in him playing school boy footy.

Along with Newman, Cottrell, Honey, Pittonet, Owies, obrien, fisher, Weitering, Walsh, Mckay, Curnow....there are not as many poor choices as you think

I also think that the coaching group believes that his defensive running when "they" have the ball is sub par. The 1st Collingwood game last year had about 3 examples where our wingers were swamped by numbers which lead to easy goals. Paddy got dropped the week after.

Hoping that he can turn it around but he is coming from a long way back. Gutsy effort to stay and fight for his spot.

Not really.

A mixed bag when you put it all into context. Most of the winners came from the same (strong) draft at the very start of a much needed rebuild. When the sting was off, so was the recruiting.

Perhaps, but guys like Parish, Francis, Ah Chee, Schache, Weidmann were all selected before Harry and Charlie

Yeah, amazing how well he could play with his contract renewal under scrutiny, especially when he'd been happy to plodd along for the last few years...

Setterfield plays footy like he's stoned. Not sure why anybody could possibly lament him being moved on.

We're trying to win a premiership, guys that cruise around with zero intensity aren't the answer.
While I agree, Setterfield is the type I'd actually trust to somehow whip out a monumental performance finals time and then go back plodding to continue the mystery that is he.

He can be "the big bodied mid" that Essendon has needed for so long in '23 !
* midfield reminds me too much of our MM & Gibbs days

Back then, our midfield was just too small and easily ragged doll

It is a 4 quarter game and Essendon relied a lot on running games out better than the opposition they lacked serious grunt. Having said that, they aren't as bad as people make out and I think Scott will get the best out of them. Some pretty good young players coming through. Setterfield has joined another big Club - probably on the way up and still young enough for a decent ride - it was as good a move as he was likely to make if any. If he played at his best standard every week he would still be finding it hard to get a run in firsts as an onballer - sans 2-3 injuries like last year. So good luck to him.

Yeah, I'm not denying that, SOS played that draft as close to perfect as you are going to get. I think he realised that you need to draft the spine first and that there was greater depth in the tall forwards than the backmen, hence why Weitering over Schache (and the fact that the former really was the greater talent). In the past I think we would have pressured ourselves into taking the big forward with the form on the board. After that, I think we were pressured into hastening the rebuild. I was for retaining SOS as the good outweighed the bad but I think he needed a more cool headed foil.
