So everybody is re-signing.

I think we need to cut at least 5 given we have 2 SSP picks and the draft to come.

Would have thought Dow and Fog were on the way out until recently. Tom Browne also said we are looking to add 2 Cat B Irish players so the squeeze is on.

Anybody want to have a guess who is making the room?
Haven’t u been paying attention? Harry! as we don’t need him 😂
Lob (if we can find him a home),
Fish (we have cover everywhere he can play- will get to a good home),
Honey (if we need another small forward for some reason, we could take Cahill/Ronke in mid season for nothing),
Carrol (harsh, but we have cover),
Ed (new vfl captain).
Plow (thanks Plow - hope u find a home)
Fog (reckon he could get offered a longer term contract elsewhere based on what he’s been doing & my best 22 has him pushed out)

I reckon fog and fish are both keeps if they can strike a deal with the club. It’s very likely they’ll get ample opportunities to play seniors due to injuries.

JSOS and Dow are probably the toughest calls the club will have had to have made in a long time. No doubt they would want to keep them but at what price? Realistically both of them should be looking for ~$1.2mil over three years, we should not be looking to pay that imo.
Dow is still our 6th mid and we look at our best playing with 3-4.
JSOS was arguably not a best 22 player then played 3 ripping games, is that sustainable?
It’s really going to be interesting how the club see it and what those two fellas will accept.
If we keep those two then imo we should be looking to help find someone like Carroll a new home
Any fringe players we offer new contracts will have to accept less money and VFL games next season.
I'm not sure JSOS or Fish(contracted, but will receive offers) will be as agreeable with these terms as Dow.

Current Cat-A's: Ed C, S Durds, LOB, Boyd, Mirkov, Cotts, Cinc, HOK (8)
Cat-B: Akuei (1)

The 2 Irish will make it 9 and 2. And maximum Cat-A's is 6, so will need to reduce the 9 to 6 either by delisting or promotion.
The way it all pans out, it appears likely we may only take the single pick in the ND. Which also makes me think we'll be looking to trade up.

But going by that list, Ed probably goes, and Boyd/LOB promoted to the senior list - which then leaves us with a full quota of 6 Cat-A's and 2 Cat-B's when you add the Irish lads. Still not convinced Nigel will be there given we have Young as our back up KPD.

But all that means is we need to create minimum 3 spots on the senior list - 1 for ND, 2 for rookie promotions, possibly 1 for trade/FA. Barring any trade requests, it may be Plow, Honey, and Philp (who could potentially be re-rookied). Marchy could possibly be another in the same boat as Philp, with one of them getting the last rookie spot if Nigel goes.

It also makes the 2024 draft period even more intriguing when you look at the players OOC next year. The more depth we have on our list though will mean that quality players are going to get pushed out the starting 22, so you'd expect a few trade requests forthcoming.

Rob Monahan from Kerry is going to Carlton
I always look forward to seeing the Irish players turn up.
It’s great that you know virtually nothing about them and less idea if they’ll make it.

It’s like the old days or at lower level or ammo clubs where some bloke runs out for his first game and people in the crowd go “ who’s this campaigner?” And the reply is “ no idea apparently just turned up at training this week”

I really like our list profile, we really want for nothing, and the last 8 weeks have shown that it is the intangibles that will make us take the next step..

However, i can't help but think every time a team stands still and doesn't add to their list, they end up being left behind.

Was going to make this it's own thread but thought maybe here might be better (feel free to move if so).

Harry (per people in the media) is not a required player for us, and messes up our structure so we should consider trading him.

Proven athletic KPF who can do things on the field that most cannot. Has had the yips a little of late but this can be fixed and has shown that he can kick straight. Has won the Coleman, was an All Australian and is just getting into the peek of his career. He has shown that he has the ability to be in the top 5 or so best key forwards in the comp, because he was a couple of years ago, so in theory the only things that can stop him from getting there again is injury, his work ethic (FWIW i think this has never been in question) or a fundamentally flawed team structure.

I want to go on the record to say, I don't even want to consider him leaving, I think he offers a lot to the team even with his current yips, let alone when he is kicking straight, but lets play this out. What players from another team could we expect to get in a trade for H, and does it make us a better team.

Looking at most trades for big name players, it is typically draft picks that you get, and I would say that H would have to be similar in value as Jeremy Cameron especially given his age. That being said, I would want a ready made player or two now that can make us better. So, with that being said, who (realistically, because we wont be able to get Bont) would you want or could we expect to get to even start to consider negotiating a deal for H?

Might be a silly question, but it does relate to list management. Does anyone know the status of Alex Mirkov. I know he had heart issues and surgeris. I wish him all the best as I thought he had huge upside, but is he going to be playing next year? I think O'Keefe will be a good back up to our current rucks, but always thought Mirkov over time could be dominant. If he can't play it would be a shame, but would we look to bring another ruck in?

Nick daicos, Marcus Bontempelli, Christian Petracca + picks 1, 2 & 3.

With the pies, dogs and dees to pay most of the above salaries.

In case you couldn't guess I am a no to trading big Harry. Sheer lunacy.

This is just media noise and no one in their right mind would not be playing Harry if he was available. The forward line was dysfunctional in the early games because of our slow ball movement and lack of forward and midfield pressure so were not getting turnovers in dangerous spots. this has changed and Harry will be a key beneficiary of this, as will Charlie who won't be dealing with the oppos 2 key defenders. and this then makes Jack Martins role critical to find the space and our mids to hit him when is available... If we are talking structure, then JSOS becomes the interesting question and if he works in the forward make up. I love Jack and think he should play because he is our best 2nd ruck, but I think adding Jack and Harry back into the mix will change the balance too much.

Lets hope his recovery is good. If he develops as he should do he will will be a key component of this team.
I personally believe that with the additions of Lemmey and O'Keefe that big Mirk won't find his way on to our primary list. But wish him all the best. Seems to have a big heart for the club.

Good luck to Alex and once a blue bagger always a blue bagger, however nothing he showed at VFL level suggests he will ever be an AFL standard player. Okeefe on the other hand has shown enough to make me think there is something to work with and needs to be playing as the #1 ruck in the 2s to build his fitness and ruck craft and this time next year should be knocking on the door of senior selection.

It was funny listening to Buckley talk about how well we are playing without Harry and how it’ll be hard to fit him in before finally acknowledging that in Harry’s last 3 games (not including against Port) we averaged 110pts.
Harry will improve us more then Cerra and Walsh will.

Felt like when Buckley was saying that he ripped it straight off here .. contradicted himself is what I felt listening to him

Going to preface this by saying that Harry ain't going anywhere, and any musings from this point on are purely hypothetical and driven by the fact that today is a slow work day...

IF Harry were to be traded, bare minimum I'm asking for a pick in the top 5, plus another in the 5-10 range. MINIMUM. I'd probably go so far as to say two top 5 picks, but if it was 3 + 7 + something else, then it might still be sufficient. He'd be two years younger than Jeremy Cameron was when he went to Geelong. Cameron was out of contract. And GWS secured picks 13, 15 and 20.

Using the mostly useless but only real "measure" of draft pick value (the Draft Points Index), GWS got 3870pts worth of picks. Picks 3+7 come in at 4168pts. Difference between the two trades would be Pick 65 (ie. negligible). So yeah, that's the baseline, but you'd push for more.

Now, the only club with a suitable draft hand as it stands is GWS. Picks 6 and 9 are close, but I'd be demanding that they improve at least one of them (ie. trade 6 up to 3, or 9 up to 5 somehow). Factoring in future picks opens up possibilities with any bottom four side...but does Harry (contracted, remember) want to leave a club finally rising from the ashes to start another rebuild elsewhere? Doubtful.

So - most likely (but still borderline impossible) scenario is GWS trade us something like Picks 5 and 6. Two outcomes from that - either bundle them and see if it'll get Pick 1 out of West Coast. Chuck in Carroll if necessary, perhaps. Harry off the books, lose a depth mid who looks like a slower burn anyway, bring in Harley Reid and chuck him straight into the forward line. That's not a bad result. Or keep picks 5 and 6, use them on a pair like McKercher and Curtin to future proof our midfield and key defensive stocks.

Either way, I'd then take our first rounder and put it on the table to Port Adelaide for Mitch Georgiades. Not sure on his exact market value or where our first rounder lands, but assuming our first is "overs" then the expectation is we get a later pick back or a favourable swap of later or future picks.

Harry and our first rounder out.
Georgiades in, plus either Harley Reid OR McKercher + Curtin.

I reckon that covers us structurally in the best way possible given who is on the market this year, and turns Harry into either an elite and dynamic forward half player, or two bankable B+ graders in positions of probable need by the time they're ready.

The Swans would probably like him - to keep their run of star attraction big forwards going.

But they would NOT like what we'd ask for in return. Sure.... sure.... here's Harry. Now send us Warner or Gulden. Maybe plus something.

We aren't trading Harry. Let's not create problems where there isn't one. In the next couple of years, Harry is going to win us some big finals. I feel it. He's unstoppable at times, and we're now building a team and system that can give him and Charlie enough looks. Let him be something for others to worry about stopping! :)

Yeah, I don't see them having the currency we'd require.

The biggest thing to consider in this hypothetical is that it's not just about needing to get adequate return for the loss of Harry. It's that we need to come out weeeeell ahead of the ledger because we're giving an opposition side, presumably one against whom we're competing for a flag, an athletic 25yo Coleman Medalist.

Why would you give up one of your biggest weapons for some draft picks, when in doing so you're also handing that weapon to your opponent? Easy answer - you wouldn't, not unless you had to (ie. out of contract, requesting a trade).

Kennedy’s had a fair lay off.
I’d say he’ll at least require a couple of games in the twos to get himself running on top of the ground like he was previous to his injury.
If Dow keeps playing the way he’s playing then I’m not sure Kennedy finds a way back.. both clearance/front of stoppage types. Not sure we can fit them in with Walsh and Cripps. Cerra and Hewett are back of stoppage/defensive mids so they aren’t comparable. Kennedy will probably end up the sub in my opinion.
