I find this a really interesting discussion point. Multiple times in 2022 we heard Fages (and possibly other guys) talk about how we tried to slow down our ball movement a bit mid-game to (a) give our forwards a better chance to get into position to score ahead of the ball but also (b) ensure our forward line had greater "density" when the ball hit the ground, allowing us more easily to lock the ball inside 50.That's exactly my thoughts.
Last week I was talking to one of the all time great forwards of the game. His comments were that the last few years Brisbane have run the gauntlet when it comes to taking their chances with the ball inside their 50 more than most other teams. The thing is, you go in attack mode and turn the ball over, the opposition defense finds it easier to re-bound because our forwards are in more vulnerable places than if they were more conservative. It shows on the scoreboard that we are very good at conversion when the ball comes in because of that however finding an even balance of how much to attack is a difficult challenge and one that's being worked on constantly.
Ultimately this was like a band-aid solution, much like our solution against Melbourne in the semi of conceding contested possession by selecting a team we hoped (correctly) would outrun them late in the game.
The panacea, and what we should be aiming for, is to move the ball forward as quickly as possible into as open a forward line as possible, giving us the greatest chance to score. At the same time, our defence has to be ready and alert to snap into position to defend a quick turnover, even while we still have the ball.
It comes back to that balance I've mentioned before between on-ball pressure and behind-the-ball structure. Very hard to exert defensive pressure if you only have 1 or 2 blokes around the ball (particularly if one of them is Joe Daniher), so that is where our defensive structure behind the ball needs to comes into play, and do so better than it did last year.
It's going to be fascinating to see what we do with this and how we go striking this balance. I very much hope we don't opt for the "solution" of slowing our ball movement to aid our defence. It will make us ugly to watch and won't help us in finals as we learned against Geelong.
