Was a surprise early pick small forward type .

But rookies are warm bodies
He was no surprise. He was in number 1 contention all year with Wardlaw, Ashcroft and Cadman. Three games over 200 points which rockliff is the only player to ever do better. He played mid/forward rather than small forward. Preseason watch at this stage but north don't have much depth in his position which should help js.

Persistence pays off for Montgomerie ......$102K Rookie DEF

Dons rookie ready to make impact

Making an AFL list at 22 years old is even more difficult.

Rhett Montgomerie understands this better than most.

After toiling away in the SANFL for six seasons, Montgomerie finally has his chance, being picked up in this year’s rookie draft by Essendon.

“I played six seasons at Central District Football Club, was overlooked in a lot of state teams, combines and never really had any AFL interest until about a few months ago

“When you hit 24, 25, it's almost impossible to get picked up, so I knew it was either this season gone or next year that I could make my push for AFL.”

Knowing this, Montgomerie decided to take his professionalism to the next level.

“In the off-season I put a massive emphasis on getting my body right,” he said.

“I hurt my knee the season before, so a lot of strength work around that.

“I was a lot better with my training and recovery standards as well.”

I think I've seen this film before.

Could very well end up the same way.

Difference between the two is Rhett is younger and an intercept defender, whereas Garrett had an absolute cannon attached to his leg (and apparently no other AFL attributes).

No way, it just means that there will be more than 3 unique players by round 10. Especially if there is lots of rookie options.
Guns and rookies traditionally starts slow and overtakes mpm. I'm not sure how you overtake when the mpm teams have enough trades now to just bring in the guns. I played g&r last year and had a great season from about round 6 onward. Still ended up 900 points and 370 ranking spots behind first. My team was too similar and I couldn't bridge the gap.

GnR beats MPM if the rookies are better than the mid-pricers. Last two years there have been enough $200-350k players to out-score rookies and gain $ fast. Other years the mid-pricers were shit, and didn't make money fast enough (especially with the higher outlay).

Given that boosting means churning through the rookies faster, a better crop of rookies is a double win.

All depends on performance of course.

Yeah absolutely the last two years have suited MPM. Doesn't mean it will (or won't) this year though.

Also, why haven't you opened your socks? 🤣

The drafts are still ending around pick 55 which is historically really low. It will be the same this year imo.

Hope not, MPM is boring, everyone has the same teams.

Maybe though. Quite a few rookies from last year could get a go though.
Not at all. Mpm increases the pool of viable players and increases variance in teams. Taking a punt on a mid pricer can set you apart. G&r rookies leaves you far fewer candidates to pick from.
