Long before Rugby League's State of Origin came a traditional football challenge with the greatest players in each state battling it out for National bragging rights.

For years the AFL has needed a return to SOO, with more players from each state, now's the time to expand into a 8 team national competition to find which state truly is the best...

I'd like to thank Rubber Arm for his template, really makes this folio look better!

Northern Territory haven't seen much national action since the former NEAFL side pulled out in 2019. Though, the revival of the NT state side has come backed with young talent through the NTFL and youth academy sides. Led by Melbourne defender Steven May, the Thunder are one to watch out for in the inaugural State Challenge.

Northern Territory will run out in a rendition of the current state jumper, with an orange yoke on a white base. The Away jumper refers to the old NT Thunder guernsey, with a lightning bolt splitting the black and orange colour scheme.

Joining the state scene for the first time is NSW/ACT. The NSW/ACT list is backed with regional talent paired with Sydney and Canberra based players with captain Callum Mills leading the team towards State Challenge glory.

The Rams have featured in the U18 championship in previous years, with an array of yoke/chevron designs being a highlight of the clubs identity. The Home simplifies the original design, with NSW's sky blue base added to ACT's navy and yellow yoke. The Away follows a V design traditionally linked with NSW sports, in a prodominelty yellow and navy colour scheme.

Queensland have a long history in Aussie Rules, with the state representing the national game since 1886. In recent times, QLD has been prominently linked with the Lions and Suns, with not much focus placed on a state team as a whole. The Maroons, led by Gold Coast born Dayne Zorko are in strong contention to taking home the State Challenge trophy.

They'll arrive to the Gabba with a set of maroon and white sash guernseys, remembering the similar sash designs used through the 80s and early 2000s

Being one of the more traditionally known footy states, South Australia have a lot to prove on the state scene. Long time rivalaries with Western Australia and Victoria will continue to challenge Jordan Dawson's men as another run for the trophy arrives.

South Australia will sport two traditional designs this season. The Home kit maintains the notable V design used by the state for around 80 years, only brightening the blue to mimic the guernseys used during the 90s and early 2000s. The Away brings back a variation of the kit during the early 80s, serving as a similar yet different change from the Home design.

Finally, football is back in Tasmania. The Tasmanian State side re-enters the national stage as previously seen in State Of Origin's during the 1970s-90s. Led by star captain Jack Riewoldt, Tasmania are looking to make a big impact in preparation for their AFL entry.

Tasmania will feature a modern, yet retro maroon and yellow stripe design on the traditional Tasmanian green base, paired with maroon cuffs from previous kits. The Away follows a similar striping pattern, now including yellow as the prominent colour on a white base to alter from their Home kit.

The first half of the nations biggest rivarly is here. Whilst usually combined as one Victorian team, Victoria Country are looking to topple over same state rivals Victoria Metro, with Patrick Dangerfield prepared to complete the major takeover.

Vic Country will run out in the traditional V design, replicating the current U18 state championship kit. The Away will have a 'Navy-Out' design, leaving a outlined V keeping centre stage, with a unique but simple twist.

In comes the citysiders of Victoria, being the favourites for taking out the State Championships. Led by captain Toby Greene, the Metro team come in looking to takeover Victoria, with a key game against Victoria Country looming.

Victoria Metro will sport a traditional 'Victorian V' design for their Home guernsey, similar to that of the current u18 Youth Championships. The Away jumper experiments with the current colour palette, maintaining the 'V' whilst including a blue-white gradient, signifying the water of the Yarra River.

Western Australia return to the national scene, bringing in a host of young talent to take on the State Challenge. The Black Swans are prepared to play, with captain Patrick Cripps looking forward to expanding the game further in WA, with the potential of a 3rd AFL team looming.

WA will run out in a mixture of the traditional black sash on a yellow base for their Home Guernsey, with a more modernly used swan design in the middle. The Away guernsey acts as a blackout kit, resembling kits of the 90s with the outlined swan highlighted in the centre.

And that's a wrap! Whist I didn't post for nearly 3 weeks (gotta love being busy and forgetting things), the portfolio is over.

The 8 state teams are all ready to fight for national glory at the Coles State Challenge, something I really wish the AFL would include in 2024 and beyond.

Hope everyone enjoyed some alternate footy ideas, I am looking ahead at some more folios and designs to start in the near future.

Thanks!
