Fremantle made a conservative approach in subbing ruckman Sean Darcy out of the game against Richmond at the weekend, according to High Performance Manager Phil Merriman.

Darcy came to the bench in the third quarter of the clash, replaced on-field by starting substitute Nat Fyfe.

Merriman confirmed Darcy would be a test to play in this week’s Perth Radiological Clinic injury update.

“Sean came off with some very low-level calf tightness and obviously off a five-day break we took a conservative approach,” Merriman said.

“He came into the Club today and is clinically quite sound.

“We’ll see how his week progresses with a plan for him to play."

Sam Switkowski will need to get through contact training this week before putting up his hand for selection in Friday night’s clash with Sydney.

The small forward has missed the past three matches after suffering delayed concussion following the round five loss to Port Adelaide.

“Switta has to pass the final hurdle in his concussion protocols which is contact training,” Merriman said.

“We’ll be looking to do that in main training this week.”

Young winger Nathan O’Driscoll’s frustrating run with a knee injury has continued, with a timeline on his return still to be determined.

“Unfortunately, he had another occurrence of that knee injury so we are just going through the process and gathering more information as we speak,” Merriman said.

“We’ll have more information on timelines after consulting with the specialist."

Meanwhile, key defender Brennan Cox is progressing well as he eyes a return to football following the mid-season bye, while young wingman Ethan Stanley joined the AFL travel squad to Melbourne late last week to get further information on an ankle injury.

“Coxy is progressing well, he is up to about 60 percent running speed and is doing about six kilometres of volume in his running sessions – he is going really well,” Merriman said.

“Ethan is actually seeing the specialist today and we’ll get some more information on his return to play timelines.”

Might be more of a discussion for the list mgmt thread, but with NOD's blood clot and with this in mind:
The severity of both their injuries are being underreported. A quick google search and I can only find the following AFL players who have had blood clots:

  • James Hird - missed 5 games
  • Troy Simmonds - 4 games in 2008 and the recurred in 2009 where he missed the rest of the season
  • Shane Mumford - 4 weeks
  • Colin Sylvia - 3 weeks
  • Tom De Koning - seemingly the only one without time missed on this list however it happened in early February
  • Keegan Brooksby - season ending
  • Sam Martyn - season ending
  • Tom Rockliff - career ending
  • Daniel Wells - career ending

Doesn't paint a pretty picture. I'm well aware the majority of the serious ones are for players who have had issues with clots in their lungs but nonetheless it's incredibly odd for an elite athlete to develop a blood clot in their joint without an apparent injury to cause it.
Given that this injury has been and will be season derailing for NOD, if everyone involved thinks that NOD can recover from it, do we give him a 1 year "sympathy"/"benefit of the doubt" type extension?

Knees are weird and overly complicated things.

At least a rookie spot IMO.

I hope he ends up on the rookie list at bare minimum - I'd be very disappointed if we delisted him.

Pure speculation at this point but I think we can write off his season - hopefully we investigate the issue further this time.

This is concerning as well, Stanley rehabbed the ankle, came back for one pretty good game at Peel, then misses and now seeing a specialist. I had high hopes he’d be putting pressure on the B22 players by the second half of the season.

I was told not to share on Friday but early prognosis on Stanley was 4-5 weeks
Did the request to keep it under wraps change, or were you like on your way out

Walyalup’s High Performance Manager Phil Merriman said the Club took the conservative approach not playing ruckman Sean Darcy on the weekend but is confident the big man will be available for the clash with Euro-Yroke (St Kilda) on Saturday.

“Sean missed (on the weekend), we didn’t quite get him to the line,” Merriman said.

“He’s had a running session since then and all is going well.

“We plan to get him into main training and is a test to play this week.”

Versatile forward Sam Sturt missed Peel Thunder’s 19-point win over Swan Districts at the weekend due to a knee concern.

“Sam just had a little flare up of his knee at main training last week,” Merriman said.

“We tried to get him up for the game, but all is going well for him to be available for selection this week.”

Young winger Nathan O’Driscoll’s frustrating run with a knee injury has continued, with Merriman stating that establishing a timeline for his return wouldn't be far away.

“He’s having no luck Dris,” Merriman said.

“He’s had his procedure (on his knee) done and a timeline for his return will be set in the coming week."

Meanwhile, fellow winger Ethan Stanley has had his timeline confirmed following a visit with specialists in Melbourne last week.

“The plan for Ethan is four weeks with his syndesmosis injury,” Merriman said.

“He’s back (from Melbourne) and will start gradually running towards the end of the week.”

In positive news, Brennan Cox’s hamstring rehabilitation continues to progress strongly, with the defender now just over a month away from making a return.

“He’s (Cox) going well,” Merriman said.

“He was on the hills doing his sort of mini preseason this morning, and he’s running up to about eight kilometres at pretty close to 80 per cent.

“All is looking well for Brennan.”

Draftee Odin Jones and NGA graduate Conrad Williams will both benefit from a bye in the WAFL, providing an extra week for them to prove their fitness.

“They are both strong chances to be available, unfortunately it falls on a WAFL bye with the state games but both are looking like they will be clear to play,” Merriman said.
