Any thoughts on Bytel? Midfield depth or VFL check 1st.
Not against Jack Billings at the right price and with the right attitude.
Tom Highmore as well if we’re looking for that type of defender but may wish to return to SA. Will Gould too.

Fullarton interesting that he could be on the move or is at least looking.

Hosie from Glenelg worth a look, ex-NMFC and seemed to be cut prematurely.

Young is good depth. He and Durdin are backup for Weitering. However if it came up that trading him would result in an improvement to the best 22 then you do it.

Teams will look at Young knowing he can play the key position defensive role and is in a good age bracket.

We could afford to let him go because of Durdin and possibly Lemmy coming on a little more.

Why don’t we get Young back to the form he was in in 2022? I’d rather that than see him doing it at another club for a nothing pick. We are short a true FB who can properly release Weitering.

At 24 years old he still has plenty of time to get there. He has already shown he is good enough when he is playing well and in the right head space. He is definitely a confidence player but that can be managed, and I have more faith in him than Lemmey who is playing forward and Durdin who may not even be retained. One injury to Weiters and our season would be shot.

Happy to trade players to improve our best 22. I think this is where we are at. We have a great list but it does have some holes in it. Too slow on the inside and at half back to compete with the better teams of 2024. We will have to focus on that and getting our rotations up and of better quality in the midfield. That means a forward/mid comes to mind. Can we fix the pace/agility issue and the forward/mid issue with a player who is high enough quality to lift us up a level?

That will be the question I think that we are all going to be asking. For that I would trade a good player. Dow, Fisher, Young or one of our big bodied mids (not Cripps) to bring in someone of quality who can tick those boxes.

Gresham has had injury issues holding him back, he's at an age a lot of players get to and overcome those things. Think he fits into our side as a big upgrade on Fogarty and probably Cuningham as well. Can see us chasing him. Nippy forward/mid. I think he would be a good get, walks into our best 22 IMO.

Hollands. I haven't seen enough of him. Another tall big bodied mid is not what we need but is that a good description of him? If he's a two way runner and he can go forward and he plays at a high enough level he probably pushes out one of our existing big bodied mids. Leg speed and agility is not the only issue on the inside for us, it's also two way run. He might give us that and a forward target.

Is it possible we go into 2024 as with Hollands and Gresham both taking a forward flank and both spending time in the middle? Taking over the roles Cuningham and Fogarty were playing. If they go well it changes the dynamics of our team. Then where does this leave guys like Cotterall, Fogarty and Cuningham? Depth? Trade?

The grand finalists and GWS are teams with short nuggety quick little blokes in their forward line and midfield. Those sorts dominated the grand final. I think these sorts of players who have pace, agility, tackle well and are dynamite with ball in hand is what we need.

I've been happy with the job Austin has done, happy to back him in and let him manipulate the list. More speed, agility and intensity and we contend that little bit more.

All depth players IMO.

We have Motlop & Durdin who I rate. Owies IMO got found out in finals for lack of tricks. Cuningham the same. Fogarty is a worker and role player more than a damaging small forward.

We need dangerous options under McKay & Curnow

I’d be looking everywhere. Gresham is talented and worth a go. Do we look at Liam Ryan who is only 26. Fantasia we could land for free and is 28. Issue is his body.
Toby McLean is available but not much different than Owies
Brockman would be good but apparently determined to go back to WA
Kai Lohman I would chase
Anyone else?

I really like them as our small forwards.

I wonder if we have reconsidered our position on Gresham with the way we finished the year?

Our half forwards were a big problem during our losing streak when we were reportedly keen. Then Fog amd Cunners came in and did a great job and we apparently cooled on him. But towards the end of the year the limitations of those guys became apparent. Gresh would be a big upgrade on either or both.

Yeah agreed. Thought he was set for Essendon now?

Just because someone is considered an 'upgrade' doesn't automatically make recruiting them the right thing to do.

Our half forwards stick out like a sore thumb compared to the top 4 and it greatly limits our avenues to goal compared to other teams. Especially on turnover.

If Geelongs Pick 7 is up for grabs and the Wizard is available at that pick I wholeheartedly believe this forward line would win us a flag.

Durdin Mckay Watson
Martin Curnow Ryan

Motlop

That adds two genuine speedsters to our forward mix instead of the hard working but one paced Owies, Fogarty, Cuningham, Motlop.

Not sure where this idea of Cunners being one-paced comes from. One of the fastest in the 22. I'm hopeful a full pre-season sets him up for a big 2024.

Do need to replace Owies/Fog though (as in, neither should be in the 22) - a lot of room for improvement there. Watson would be huge if we could make it happen. I've got faith in Mots and Durds, but I imagine we'd use any/all of them through the middle as well.

Be great to add some genuine pace to the midfield and backline too. It's more than leg speed though - we need a better system, quicker thinkers and better kicks.

For all that, the list is good enough if the coaches get it right.

I don't think anyone thinks Cunners is one paced. Athletically he is exactly what we need. Issue is he often doesn't get to use his pace because he struggles to get involved in the play. He looked much better early in our winning streak so hopefully he just tired out by the end of the season

Would love Watson. He is a freak. Reckon he goes to high though.

We used our first last year on Hollands, so we can either trade 2024 1st before next years draft or trade on the night to receive hopefully a better return.
I'd keep the 2024 first to trade for an experienced player of need?
There does not seem to be much quality in the free agent market this year, we are better served going to the draft.
Aside from Hollands, l don't see us doing much in the trade & free agent market, more likely we will focus on improving our draft hand in the November draft.

Id really like Liam Ryan in our team.
We need a small forward who can also take a strong overhead mark.
I don't see that in Mots, Durds, Fog, Owies and Fish.
Even Bobby channeled Jezza yesterday.

I’ve been hearing Pat Naish might be getting a gig at Carlton

Not claiming to be an itk but I’ve heard that from a few people
Reads more like a VFL option. But FIIK

Agree on this, that Zac Bailey type is definitely missing on our list right now.
