VFL 2024 - Reserves Game Day discussion Rnds 2 - 21 (Merged threads)

Just a few questions (had to go out at half time so wasn't watching).

• Marchbank seemed to go OK in first half. Did he finish at a reasonable level?
• Jack Carroll had a good 1st quarter, but quiet 2nd quarter. Seems like that's how he played out the game...?
• Motlop, whilst snagging a couple, didn't look like ready to step up...?
• Didn't seem like any one else put their hand up either...?

Sharks dominated last half. Only their goal inaccuracy kept scores close.

Motlop started well with 2 goals but less impact for rest of the game. Don't think he did enough.
Cuners ok but only played last half. Would need to play at least one full game to even be considered.
Marchbank probably showed the most but don't think he'll get a gig unless there's an injury to D50.
Lord showed good signs on debut.

Don't think anyone that played today will get a promotion to seniors next week.

Lost by 2 goals - more precisely 1 goal 6 which probably more accurately reflects the extent to which Southport outclassed us once they kicked into gear. Reeled us in and were all over us. In terms of seniors next week Binns kept grinding, not his best game but might have been our best player once Wilson went off. Wilson was turning it on until injured, hope it is nothing too bad. Pitto did PK but nothing to force his way into the firsts, Marchbank started looking like the player we know he is, Carroll was good early but faded out. Cuningham played the second half and showed his class but probably needs more runs in the 2s and to show his body can stand up, Motlop showed a bit but not enough for mine to earn a firsts gig. Young and Durdin didn't disgrace themselves but are backup only at this stage. Cooper Lord showed a bit, seems neat and honest, laid more tackles than any senior or rookie listed player but my initial thought is he might be a bit vanilla for the higher level. For seniors next week unless the match committee want to go 2 rucks I can't see anyone forcing their way in. If they want to demote Fantasia and/or Durdin Binns Carroll and Motlop could all be considered.

It seems strange to be outright second on the ladder in seniors yet bottom of the ladder in reserves.

Can someone who watches both levels (I don't get to see many vfl games) give some insight into what's going on? Injuries? attitude? Coaching? Players just not good enough? All of the above?

I could be wrong but it feels like sides up the pointy end of the afl ladder usually have strong reserves sides.

After he missed selection for last night's game, I made the comment that Vossy probably wants Mots to knock the door down in the twos first.

He played a serviceable game... whether that's enough for senior selection, I'm leaning towards a No. Maybe I'm setting the bar too high.

No it's fair enough - I just don't know what his ceiling is in this current VFL team. Not sure he is able to show much more then he did in his last outing for instance.

He was hobbling after the game, but no crutches. Couldn't tell if he had an ice pack on, but didn't appear to.

only watched the last quarter and we were dismal all over the ground, very disappointing considering the ins. Motlop and Cerra in next week would be the only changes, Fantasia and Durdin out.

thought Marchbank was solid , no qualms about him coming back into seniors .. also thought Motlop was good , put himself about and was lively today

A big no to Marchbank for me..he's just not up to it at the moment

Defence is humming nicely in the seniors, no need to change it at the moment.

Just managed minutes. Probably injected into the second half when the pace had come off a bit. Would obviously need a few more weeks of building up match fitness before he'd be considered for promotion not that there are any spots currently available.

No. Partly because he was on for a half and partly because he still doesn’t impose himself enough.
