Malcolm Blight was actively involved in the match but he wasn't in the team

You seem to regard "off field support staff" as some sort of put down? It's no shame to be part of the crucial support crew for an individual sport.

The arena is empty except for one man
Still driving and striving as fast as he can
The sun has gone down and the moon has come up
And long ago somebody left with the cup
But he's driving and striving and hugging the turns
And thinking of someone for whom he still burns

He's going the distance

Not we're going the distance.
That is an EPIC quote. Absolute gold.

Does it though?

I could guarantee Flynn Plenty or Joe Pike for example would have been better options IMO if we're looking to develop a future lead ruck. Currently the SANFL ruck division looks to be Forward/ruck Toby Murray or top up Saxon Evans from the Willaston FC until Strachan is good to go.

Where does the developing ruck play whilst the first choice backup rucks 85% game time to keep their fitness up because that's what's required if they're called up to the firsts? The premium structure at our club is first ruck that thrives on continuity and huge workload that gets a short chopout each quarter by a key forward. Note the firs ruck also loves pushin forward ahead of the ball to compete against our forwards for long kicks int our deep forward area.

If that's our favoured AFL structure, which it's been for about 15 years, why wouldn't we think it applies to the SANFL?

Do we have any rucks to play in the SANFL?

Not at the moment, but that's a deliberately accepted risk because having an extra ruck on our list weakens our 2s unless the primary is injured. Which is what I posted. Agree or not, we have deliberately chosen to not have a primary backup ruck and a developing ruck on our list. As I just posted, the next ruck up, currently Strachan, needs to take almost all of the contests to remain AFL ready. So this leaves the developing ruck to act as a key forward or back, which isn't their bag and will negatively impact SANFL performance.

Would have made more sense to delist Strachan this year…..Flies in the face we were watching McAndrew, he’s fallen in our lap and we can’t take him due to stupid list management.
I do wonder what our salary cap for 2024 looks like and what that means for the coming offseason though.
Suspect we maxed out on option to delist players due to salary.

Ways we could have gotten McAndrew (or another ready to go ruckman) onto our list by now:

1) Drafted Moyle instead of Patrick “I still look 12 years old” Parnell

2) Not continued to flog the dead horse that is Brodie Smith’s AFL career until he inexplicably reached his games trigger despite making a fool of himself repeatedly. Does anyone on earth think Smith is ever playing another game, even if we have 8 guys injured?

3) Traded Sam Berry instead of re-signing a guy that blatantly can’t be a consistent AFL midfielder or play anywhere else on the ground. He had at least one club (Pies) knocking on our door.

4) Pay Strachan out after he clearly demonstrated that he isn’t AFL standard in 2024. Present day Ormond-Allen is a better backup than this thing. And that’s before he got injured.

5) Instead of redrafting Schoenberg or Burgess as rookies, cut losses there and just take a ruck instead.

I’d argue that we should have done 3-4 of those 5 things. We did none. And now our Rd 1 ruckman is Reilly O’Brien who has devolved this preseason into something beyond belief, and our backup is literally nobody.

If we end up moving Thilthorpe into the ruck and he cops an injury in there as a result, I will provide the pitchforks for the march. It’s beyond a joke.

Well, I agree we should have drafted Moyle, and we should have found a way out of Smith's contract.

I don't think anyone wanted Sam Berry.

I don't think we had the financial ability to cut a contracted player.

And I think the club rates Strachan higher than we do - SANFL best and fairest in 2024, they haven't written him off after his two injured AFL games.

Or maybe they have, but it doesn't seem like it.

Look at how easy it is to find a decent ruckman.

Should be easy to fill the 2025 void at the end of 2025.
