I was quietly confident that Eyre would be listed (despite the hamstring setback).
We have tall depth down back- Frampton, Ed Allan 194cms and 84kgs, Steene at a pinch.

I am bullish that Murphy will run out against GWS- the Club will prioritise his well being but I back the player to adopt his game style to be less at risk of injury (this has been witnessed in the way that Nathan Kreuger has changed his kamikaze style to one where his injury risk is greatly reduced).

Sullivan is a very solid citizen and at least offers a player that can cover a Mitchell being rested if needs be...

Bytel is 189cms and 89kgs- he is an elite runner and a potential Sidebottom replacement on the wing. I am actually please that he was listed by the Magpies- I think that he will blossom in our system.

Congratulations to all three lads- they will improve our depth in the 20-26 year old age group.

Sidey is another who can run all day.
The key to WHE is his versatility - he is a good mark, kick goals and can play on shorts and talls.
His gut running often goes unnoticed.
He was the last player to touch the Sherrin in the GF because he was still running.

What the f**** is up with journos finding/posting out info before the clubs posted? Every club has it moles obviously but this is pretty poor and takes the gloss off for the boys who get picked up. Just my opinion. Also why has the whole video of the match sim disappeared off youtube? Had it lined up to watch when I got home today and found a "this video is unavailable" with a 8min highlights clip there instead :greenalien:
Love the passion, but there’s these people called family, friends and player agents. I’m sure the club told them to be discreet, but I doubt the clubs reach stretches to those 3 relationships. The club probably sat on it to sort out the social and digital media stuff so I’m not sure there’s much blame to go round on it.

Pretty sure I recall Fly at one point in 2023 saying about Steene - "I think we've found ourselves a player".
It was before the game that we played McStay and Johnson as our rucks ...

He was saying, I rate him for the future but he's not ready yet.

Steene took some cracking marks in the vfl last year and looks a good prospect, but the reality is that he didn't do enough as a forward to play as a forward who chops out in the ruck and got cut up in ruck contests against the bigger vfl rucks - same with Begg. They just weren't AFL standard last year.

Hopefully they've both made strong progress; however ruck or ruck/forward depth looks a real weakness. In terms of 2024, I'm more hopeful for Freddy being able to step in when needed, or using Johnson to pinch hit - as 26 games each from both Cox and Cameron will require a fair bit of good fortune. Frampton is the obvious other one, but I think it's a bit unfair on him, as I don't think you're maximising his chance of becoming best 22 if you're using him as a hole filler rather than settling him in defence

And the Prelim Final.... and several other games throughout the H& A season. The guy is always there, always presenting and giving others an outlet to go to. So very underrated!

And has figured regularly late in games helping us win these close finishes.

Yep. But the reality is that we've got an aging list, so if you're looking to bring in youngsters, if its a close call it could be whe out rather than Lipinski, because Lipinski has a lot of years ahead. Obviously that changes at the pointy end of the season when it's purely best team rather than an eye also on the future.

Eyre doesn’t surprise me hugely. I had said that I’d still take him if he had shown enough up until his injury.

Sullivan also makes sense. I said he should get a spot based on the intra club. Was great.

But Bytel? Seems an odd choice.

Would have gone with Teakle or Sofronidis. Murphy may not last the season and Howe will retire this year most likely. Sofronidis is 23 and taller than both and is a like for like style defender. Odd choice.
He’s not like for like with Murphy, and I reckon they’ll have TJ earmarked for the Howe role given his very similar size and athletic profile.
We’re going to have Frampton, Dean and Eyre all waiting in the wings for a key defence spot, I don’t know why we’d need a player like Sof unless he was a standout performer, which he very clearly wasn’t this preseason.

Can't see Frampton being best 22 - he's depth and will only play when there's a hole to fill - I can see us playing him behind the ball in the VFL with stints on the ball to maintain his ruck skills and fitness.

My take…. the clubs decision was a matter of whether eyre was worth the risk vs Sof with less upside but a safer bet. Even though they are not exactly like for like, one of them and only one of them was always going to get picked for needed tall/ medium tall defensive depth.

Teakle was a straight decision about whether or not he adds one too many ruckman to the list at the cost of flexibility in other positions.

husthwaite was a no

sullivan was a yes.

that left one remaining spot for Bytel, or alternatively a pass and open list spot for midseason. im glad they filled all three spots

Yeah, I think Teakle became less of a priority with the great development of Begg & Steene this off-season.
Also, with Howey still looking strong, there's time for Ryan & Jiath to get more seasoning this year or two, so Sof also less of a priority.

2 out of 3 for me, total faith in GW, IMO one of the best in the business. Just a little surprised CFC went two mids! Wish all three the best in black and white.

Eyre (20?), Sullivan (33?) & Bytel (27 or 34 maybe?).
Do we know yet?

I always like to have fun linking new players number to past players.

worthington and Starcevich were good kpps for us…. So eyre gets 27!

of the other two the best runner gets mcgaunes 34

That Worthington-Cooper-Magro full-back line is one of my great early-ish club memories.

My midfield depth rated (IMO), players out side the 22, 1 being next in line.

1. Lipinski
2. Macrae
3. Allan
4. Sullivan
5. Harrison
6. Carmichael
7. Bytel

So, if De Goey, N Daicos, Pendles, Crisp, Mitchell, Sidebottom and J Daicos go down then Bytel will get a crack. Now, that's being prepared!
