Maybe he's realised it's not his calling in life.

When your old man / CEO gives you a bit of a backhander saying that your motivation to get the best out of yourself may have been somewhat lacking then there's probably a little fire hidden amongst the smoke and shadows behind the window...

Reef is ready
AJ has higher gears, and its super exciting to see him looking to get there
Dean and Allen will get a run at some stage this year to see how they go

Most of the young ones we retained are starting to look like likely types. I think they really chose the right ones to persist with.
( although Im not so confident with JC. unfortunately)

We really drafted two kids who look well suited to our gamestyle

Id expect Bytel gets a gig with us. Inside mid will increasingly be recognised as a specialist role (like ruck) and some guys are built to play that role only. We can use an extra mature back up in there.

I think if we need a back up ruck we can always take them in the MSD. Dont need to commit to them at this time.
I’m more leaning towards Hustwaite getting the gig but Bytel put up some numbers. I actually think it’s good for there to be list spot competition. It drives the standards.

the more i read of bytel the more it seems to me that we will give him a list spot
Must admit that I didn't know anything about him until he got the gig as a train with player. Very consistent performer at VFL level from reading his stats - the knock on him is his ability to spread, so he looks like he could be a good insurance policy for Titch as well as a big body in the VFL to protect some of our emerging mids

The best thing about Bytel is that he came from St Kilda. He can probably play at a high level now he is in a real AFL club environment.

I reckon it would give us a genuine crack at back to back if McStay, Schultz and Johnson have big years.

Ash has a ridiculous amount of natural skill and talent. If he can get close to fulfilling that potential he'd be massive for us.

I reckon a forward line of McStay, Checkers, Ash, Schultz, Hill and McReery would go alright. Yes, I'm aware Elliott and Cox/Cameron aren't in that mix, but I mean, Elliott is 31(?) and just came off a pretty so-so season (outside the purple patch post bye). I'd like to believe he can be pushed out by those underneath.
Sometimes things have to click for certain players, sometimes they never do, and the unfulfilled talent to the observer is left like a wasting corpse lying on the side of the road.
Id like to think AJ watching Bobby in the GF was one of those aha moments, but time will tell.
For if AJ clicks and can play the minutes the way the team and coaches require, we may just go back to back

the more i read of Bytel, the more he sounds like Finn

inside, good hands, distributes to outside, strong in the tackle but lacks real leg speed & ability to spread beyond congestion
Finn really needs a big pre-season to lock down a place in the team. 2024 is his year to become something. But with potentially Hustwaite or Bytel competing for spots, Lipinski and WHE would have to be worried. Both looked vulnerable throughout the year.

Much respect to Noble turning up day 1 after being dropped for finals, rather than sooking it up at another club like Adams.
He's also been training with other senior players, prior to club training starting, even wearing a 23 premiership t-shirt. He's a quality human. I have no doubt those who did get a premiership this year are just as hungry for Johnny to get one next year.

Most blokes are hungry. Success doesn't last forever so have to make the most of it whilst you can.

Adams took a 3 year deal as his last contract, which anyone would do. Bloke bled for the club. Let’s not pretend otherwise

Was there a 2km time trial? Naicos established himself last year by winning it, so was hoping to see the same.

I think Adams had decided before the GF he was leaving the club,I guess he would have liked a flag before he left but he chose to go,his choice done and dusted.
It would have all been done well before that. He knew his time was up at the Pies well before that. Probably knew mid season
