In the weeks following the GF, I talked myself into not expecting too much in 2024, coming from the misplaced notion that we Pies fans couldn't possibly experience this much joy in so few years. It doesn't happen to us. Its just not Collingwood.

But now - f*** it - I'm getting excited reading this thread and seeing the footage of training. We are very good.

Reckon you can pretty much lock Lachie Sullivan in for a list spot. He was so good today. Playing inside mid and then moved up forward.

Dont know what is but I seen him as a Taylor Adams type just with better skills.

I don't know what Darcy Cameron is putting in his morning coffee since they came back from xmas break, but he's just continued dominance over his opponents. What a turnaround.

I think that, like Lippa, it took him a while to get over the effects of his injury.
Great to see!
He also has Begg & Steene coming after him.

What I love about Fly and this coaching group is they aren’t afraid to throw the magnets around.

Heaven forbid we have injuries throughout the year to a dozen of our best 22.

At least we’ll have Elliot who has spent a whole preseason training at half-back. Macrae can play wing, inside mid, half-back and forward. WHE plays everywhere bar ruck. Pendles can be plonked on the wing, inside mid, half-back and forward. Carmichael can go in the guts, wing and forward. I can’t even keep up with where Crisp is lining up in games. And there’s tons more that can play multiple roles.

This alone makes me think we can have a serious dent in season ‘24. Bring it on I say.

With Schultz coming in, makes sense.
Plus it give us plenty of options if we lose a midfielder /defender.
Was absolutely a strength last year (that we moved people around rather than brought up a replacement from VFL).

Surprised they haven’t let Schultz loose in the middle. But probably want him to nail down one spot first.
Clearly chosen Beau for that move. Which plenty called out early last year. So great to see that happening.

Expect next pre-season for schultz to begin to role through the middle.

Its next level coaching IMO.

Schultz is an elite forward and will likely stay there.
We have many options through midfield.

AJ took some nice marks, But prob kicked 1-2 goals.
Reef was clearly very dominant, yet barely gets a mention. Very strange.

The journo probably watched 20 minutes, asked a few questions about the blokes who impressed him and tapped out a story. He probably only saw the Reef snapped goal and not the others.

I'm not saying that as a criticism of the journo, just that it's training and I doubt they have time to watch the whole session. There's 18 clubs and our match SIM is not a big story outside of us nuffies

Why on earth would anyone give a fk if one of our young blokes develops into a fine footballer? The whole comp was happy about Bontempelli, Daicos etc.

There is a lot of hate from a few posters about our father son and academy picks. Aparently we would be an average team if we didnt get Moore, Daicos x2 and IQ for free (so they say). Another good accademy pick for us would send some posters into a spiral.

Yeah, that feels very obvious for the last couple weeks I reckon.
I just wasnt sure whether they'll take a third, or not. And then decide on mcstay's spot around mid season.

I'm curious about Sullivan - just that he was added to the train on list later. I wonder if he got an offer to train earlier and took a while to agree or whether the recruiters were still trolling through footage and data in December.

I haven’t seen one or heard of one. All of those boys are highly regarded, and quite rightly so.

If you come across arseholes you should ignore them.

They are those loud minorities on the main boards that often post about changing the academy/father son rules or post crap in the main board game day thread. I find them quite amusing at times. It's not that they dont rate those players, it's more that they feel we got them unfairly. If Reef turned out to be a good player it would add more fuel to the fire. Which I would fine more amusing.

Now Mick, don't be harsh. I am happy to have anything posted that informs us about players, training etc. The beauty of our set up is that thanks to those who post training reports, we can see clearly the inadequacies of media reports such as the HUN's. Don't shoot the messenger who has gone to the trouble to copy/paste an article that most of us would never otherwise read.

We also wouldn’t have traded away pick 2 if Nick wasn’t FS, so once again, we’d have had every chance of getting him.

The only variable with Nick is if Reef comes good. Even then, people should only be angry we got Reef as a bonus to Nick, rather than being angry about both, but you just know people will opt to ignore rationality in favour of outrage.

The hilarious part is that the Dogs literally got pick 1 (JUH), pick 2 (Darcy), and pick 15 (Croft) genuinely gifted to them within the space of 3 drafts and nobody seems to care.

Yeah, his invite came about a week later I think? Maybe there was some hoops to go through first. Medicals and such.

Yeah he has. Did you just do the old “overall numbers” look? From his 10 matches with Sandi Bytel had 6 matches of 30+ possessions and 3 of 12 or less (either injured, managed or carryover player). Macrae had 2 of 17 with 30+ and is currently the inferior inside ball winner.

The test for me though was the eye and Bytel just looks a more capable senior player than Macrae because he has the inside power game like an LDU or JDG (just not to that level).

Edit: to clarify and put a full stop on it from my perspective I have Bytel ahead and the better of the 2, but in a real world pecking order discussion it’s say the 27th v 30th player on our list.

I mean, yeah, I did, the overall numbers are similar, and in as much as Bytels peak numbers are higher it simply means his quieter games where much quieter, you say that's because of injury, management and carryover, and presumably those don't apply to Macrae, but I am not sure how you could possibly know all that about either player, and certainly not both, so I am not terribly convinced.

Sullivan is even older than Bytel, at 26, but his numbers last year where better than either Bytel or Macrae, and by a considerable margin;

Again, hard to compare the ceilings of blokes at different ages, we will know in a week or so if the club thinks Bytel is a better prospect than Macrae, because if the do he will get an SSP spot.

I feel sorry for the interstate clubs they barely get any benefits from the AFL, clearly favouring Collingwood!
