I disagree. Based on the track reports from almost all watchers it sounds like Sofronidis has been underwhelming. In any case, we have Frampton to bolster stocks down back, if need be.

Oh that's disappointing

I feel a bit embarrassed I forgot about Frampton though lol

It's interesting. Track watchers have said he has been virtually invisible over the preseason. Yet sombody on SEN last week was reporting how the club has been very happy with him and how seamlessly he had fit him to the game plan

Interesting

Based on watching Jen's videos, Eyre can seem quite slow at times. Not sure if he is running out of gas when he looks very slow or if that is just how he is.

Thinking about the way that we play and our current defensive profile it seems as though pace is really one of the most important things in our back line. Moore, quaynor, Murphy, howe, noble, maynard, Markov are all quite fast. In fact I'm hard pressed to find a slow player in our backline.

With the way we defend with fullbacks pressing high up the ground and trying to disrupt plays before they even pass the halfway point, our defenders need pace in order to cover ground in the inevitable outcome of the ball getting over the top, which we saw many times last year.

We defend a lot whilst running backwards toward goal and also rushing opponents in the centre of the ground. I wonder if that will be a factor in Eyres selection. Ie. Not his skills or height, but his fit within our game style.
It's not only about the way we play, you never want to concede leg speed to the opposition when playing on the MCG. If Eyre is lacking, although that may not be the case, we will not pick him up.

I believe Eyre and Sullivan will be the picked up.

The only slight concern with Eyre is that he has a history of soft tissue injuries. This is why Essendon and before that the Saints let him go. But injuries aside he could be good pick up as long as he doesn't get injured. We cannot afford to many on the sidelines

Sullivan looks a likely type. Sofinindis well jury is still out on him

Thats true, which is prob why they want to see how his body holds up over a brutal pre-season, and he has not missed a session.
He's actually been working with some high performance people to work on those issues.
Its the best preseason he has ever completed apparantely. The only pre-season he has been injury free. But with his height, the hammy issues could have come from growth and not knowing how to handle his body at the time.

I think there is every chance whoever we give a spot to will not be who most expect.

Just call it a 'feeling'.
Hustwaite over bytel/sullivan lol you heard it here first haha.

Don't be embarrassed. Fortunately for us non-track watchers it's easy to 'forget' about some of the depth we have! It's been a long time since we had such depth across all lines.

I for one, don't think - or at least don't have - Frampton in the team for Round 1 (or round zero, or whatever dumbass ssytem the AFL have now).

If Jarod Wade can't get him right, then no one will. I'm backing Wadey in....

yeah, and been working with people outside the club on his own time too. He's determined to get his body right, and so far its worked. Has not missed a training session, and no issues all preseason.

I wouldn't be surprised. IF we take 3, one of them might include Teakle.

Sounds like a lot of tall timber if we do?

Surely if we take Teakle the club either already rates him above Begg and Steene, or alternatively is very confident one of Begg and Steene will succesfully be reinvented as a key position player?

Begg does sometimes play down back.
Or maybe they view him as depth before steene is ready? But he hasnt been playing much ruck this pre-season. They have more used him as another big marking man down forward that chips in at the ruck.

Hmm still think it might one too many in the mix given we also have frampton and Kreuger, with mcstay to return and possibly Eyre to pick up….. Cameron and Cox as premiership players….unless they think Teakle is the absolute pick of the bunch!

Yeah, thats fair. But given Kreuger's issues, do they want another tall down forward? And if they go with 3, can go all three lines.
Defence.
Mid
Forward/ruck

Not saying it'll happen, but they've clearly invited him to train for a reason, looking to provide depth in that area.

Did you say Begg trained in defense today Jen?

Maybe we’ve been hoping Sofranidis picks up and he hasn’t and we’ve assessed Teakle as a better forward-ruck than Begg.

In that case maybe we’ve made the call to switch Begg back and take Eyre, Teakle and one of Sullivan/Bytel.

Yeah, they sneakily did it and never announced it. But its mentioned in the AFL season guide under the rookie elevations. Promoted him ahead of Dean and Begg, and he's only been on the list 12 months.
But then again, they did give him a 2 year contract when we signed him.

That says a fair bit about how much upside they see in him.

This is during match play. Same line as noble and IQ. Frampton playing forward in this

I can see the logic in selecting Eyre, Teakle & a mid.

Never thought I'd hear anyone ever say we may be too top heavy, lol.

Does anyone else see "SSP" and think...
Sir Scott Pendlebury?

I think that is a pretty good summation

Bigger than Murphy but if he got a game at afl level I think he would play that type of role in our team
Even if he doesn't crack into the side, given our lack of tall depth he should be given more time, foot injury year was a write off, Good key position backs take a while

Given the age of Howe, Murphy's concussion risk and Dean's injury history, I hope we take Sofronidis onto the list.

Feel like we need to really solidify our tall back depth
I’m a bit meh on Sof tbh. He doesn’t seem to play like a true tall from reports, and as a third intercepting tall I’d prefer we develop TJ if the reports are true that he’s grown to 191cm. His height, athleticism and go go gadget arms make him the logical successor to Howe as that loose intercept defender.
That aside, having Frampton, Dean and Eyre all as key defence depth is more than enough imo.

Correct me if I'm wrong ... but I thought the club kept saying we'd be picking 2 and holding one pick for the mid season draft?

Or have things changed?
