Correct - Freo announced just prior to the MSD that they would not be participating and that Kuek was making good recovery. A few weeks after this Kuek played his first game for East Perth Reserves (Peel had a bye).

I’d say this is a blue print for what they will do here. Have two players come and train over summer for an SSP spot. They can have two players (at a time) for every available spot. If none of the players impress then leave spot open for MSD or for Odin Jones to recover and play WAFL.

The two players that missed out gives us an indication of the positions of players we have in mind for draft. Max Beattie (small forward) and Sam Van Rooyen (tall forward). So I don’t think our draft plans change greatly except where we potentially land on our third ND pick. If we believe Carr is a good chance of going through the ND and RD undrafted then he could be one of the two we get down for SSP train-on.

Actually think it could change how we think about pick 30 (or pick 67 if no commitments have been made to Carr) to a small degree if anything. Might mean that we’re say 40% chance of drafting a KPF instead of 10%. I’m completely making those numbers but I think you can get the point.

Agreed. Not a massive change but certainly a consideration.

As for Carr my understanding (which is worth bugger all really) is that we have made no promises but he is in the mix for our third selection and the F/S nomination is to give us that option to grab him in the event someone decides to bid on him before our pick.

I'd be super happy with Travaglia or Lindsay. I feel we could use some silk to go with our blue collar/wharfie grunt. A good kick would potentially get early game time on our wing or half back line, considering our overall lack of quality ball users.

To be clear I’m not saying the SSP to replace Jones is not an option. I’m just saying I don’t think we can make a decision on that by next week when the drafts are on.

It’s not fair on Jones to make him inactive then by Round 5/6 he’s ready to play limited minutes in the WAFL reserves but he can’t because he’s (temporarily) not on our list until we move someone else onto the inactive list.

Likewise I don’t think it’s fair on say Carr (???), Knobel or Narkle to change our plans for them because of this injury when we don’t, to my knowledge anyway, have a timeframe for this injury. The decision to upgrade Worner when we didn’t need to (but had committed to previously) for me shows we’re trying to stay true to any commitments made to our players and that would likely extend to players we’ve committed to but aren’t yet on our list.

If Jones is to be replaced via the SSP, I expect us to be inviting two players down to train with us between December and January. If there’s any chance Jones returns at any level in 2025 though I wouldn’t expect us to replace him.

We’re not finding ourselves an extra draft pick out of this. Any SSP train ons will be overlooked at the draft (maybe including delisted players).

Another option if we can invite 2 players per open spot as train ons is to invite 4 players. 2 for Narkles and 2 for Odins. Essentially that would allow us to have a good look at 3 players for Odins spot, whilst giving him 3 months to see how he is.

We committed to upgrading him when we re-signed him. The club can but won't go against that agreement.

It is understood that the Dockers have discussed a potential play to move up the order, targeting one of St Kilda’s top-10 selections in exchange for picks 14 and 30. However, even if they remain where they are they will have a range of nice options at their first pick.
The best talent from Western Australia – Bo Allan – looks certain to be off the table amid interest from Melbourne, Richmond and West Coast earlier in the order. Victorian midfielder Xavier Lindsay has also been linked to Fremantle, but is also believed to be in the mix for St Kilda (picks 7 and 8) and West Coast (pick 12).
If fellow Victorian midfielder Murphy Reid were to slide to the Dockers first pick, there is every chance he would be promptly snapped up. Reid’s Sandringham Dragons teammate, Taj Hotton, is also likely to come into the mix, along with Murray Bushrangers forward Joe Berry.
Whether Fremantle selects a midfielder or forward with its first pick could affect what it does with its second selection, but that is also in a prime spot of a deep draft pool. WA forward-ruck Kayle Gerreyn is right in their hitting zone at pick 30, while dashing South Australian defender Angus Clarke is another player who has been linked to that selection.
Fremantle hasn’t been afraid to pick untapped talents before, and it has shown strong interest in smokey Sam Toner, who burst onto the scene after booting 50 goals for Narre Warren in local footy.

A genuine smokey who has come from the clouds to be considered a draft chance this year is Dandenong Stingrays forward Sam Toner. He spent most of the year kicking bags of goals in local footy for Narre Warren, booting 50 before earning a call-up to the Coates Talent League. He was an over-ager, and had never been an interleague representative.

The 19-year-old's rapid development translated to 10 goals in his first three CTL appearances, including five in just his second outing. He broke his wrist the fourth time out, ending his season, but he had done more than enough to pique the interest of AFL recruiters. Such intrigue showed when Toner was invited to the Victorian state draft combine.

Offering great energy and speed through the ball, Toner is capable of pushing high up the ground to create turnovers or link the play going inside 50. He is also effective closer to goal where he so often impacts the scoreboard. Toner impressed with his vertical leap at the combine, though has a ways to go in terms of improving his conditioning and size.

I like the sound of Clarke myself. Any kid that’s gone to the lengths he has to play at the level is usually made of the right kind of stuff.

Datolli would be a reach unless Berry and Hannaford have somehow both been drafted by our pick, at which point we'd probably be better off going best available.

Maybe if Berry and Lindsay are both gone by our pick, we trade back to the end of the first round for a sweetener and take whoever's left of Hannaford and Datolli.

I'm honestly torn on 14 and 30 for 8, like, that's pretty good value really and I'd trust whoever Walls wants there must be pretty damn good but no pick till like 60 odd after 8 is a bit gross. Should have been tougher with Richmond really

I think 1 top end player is significantly more valuable to us than a very good player and another chance at a good player.

Especially if that player fills a need. Sounds like a Lindsay or Traviglia attempt which I am ok with, however boring Wednesday would become.

It is a potential trade with GWS that is on the cards.

I don’t doubt we have shopped 14,30 as a bundle to the likes of Saints (8) and Melbourne (9). The Saints can do a lot better than another second round pick.

It's a tough one, I think we still have a few positions we could do with developing players that could step in when required earlier, which tends to be first to early second round types.

Id normally think no chance as well but seems like it only costs a future 2nd to give from 4 to 2. Weird draft.
