This isn't a one club champion, however Nick blakey had the choice of brisbane or north melbourne via fatherson or swans as an academy prospect
also helped that his dad was a coach at sydney at the time (or at least working in a senior non-coaching role)

definitely needed the academy to help him decide on playing football, exactly what the academies were brought in to do

funny that his dad then moved to work at norf a year or two after nick got drafted

Calling Andrew Walker a Champion is a reach
Good player with a great leap and high draft pick but never delivered to the potential
get the feeling cartoon regard his as a club champion, the bar is pretty low over there though

yeah he gets his hands on the ball plenty inside but after that his handball is often more of a shuck in a general direction. doesnt give the outside player clean possession he just kind of propels it toward them. very much like what we see with tarranto and hopper currently. truly elite mids will be hitting a player on the tit with a clean handball or breaking clear to deliver themselves. he aint that.
I'll have to pull you up here on this. Nobody has better hands in this draft class than Dyson, he is absolutely elite at dishing off with rapid and clean hands, often under immense pressure. I've been watching him since he was 14, and he's always had that, it's one of his best traits. Good mids have good hands and the best inside mids have great hands, rather than great feet. To get both with elite hands and feet is extremely rare, you might get good with one and elite with the other. I have lost count the number of times I've seen him win a ground ball or a clearance by handballing out of tight spaces to advantage and certainly will be a top 5 mid in the comp in terms of his hands.

As a player himself, whilst he's been my pick 1 for 3 years, I project him to a Ryan Griffen type of player. Now that's no Bontempelli lets be real here, but a very good player. He may not be damaging by high end speed or kicking but he is damaging by hand, damaging by workrate, defensive pressure, leadership, consistency and moreso his big game performances. If it's a big game, he turns up and often wins BOG. You probably won't find too many more kids with better resumes from their underage years coming into the AFL than Sharp. If there's an award up for grabs, he's probably won it.

Yeah I think from watching him that he’s hands are great! The Taranto and hopper comparison I’m guessing comes from the fact that they are shite kicks.
If you watch Dyson at stoppage he is always on the move, Taranto and hopper have concrete boots on
They all might not be the greatest kick but I think Sharps movement and energy at the stoppage separates him from the other two which is definitely something to look out for when watching Sharp in my opinion.
And I was one of the ppl saying he’s just like Tim T and Hopper last year

Sharp is going in the top-5, and almost certainly top-3 (of non-NGA etc…). This talk of him slipping outside the top-10 is just lunacy.
We don't need another ball-gettter on the inside that has question marks over his use, we need better users, does he use the ball better Taranto & Hopper? maybe but that's debatable.

We have Sam Lalor who is a great user and already have Smillie both are big-bodied Sharp types.

I would rather slightly lower possesion getter player that hurts you.

Just my opinion and I clearly haven’t seen as much of him as you but I don’t see elite hands tbh, he’s elite at getting the ball in tight no question but a lot of his handballs seem to be pretty grubby coming out or overly loopy. At afl level that’ll give the oppo just enough time to shut the receiving player down. He’s not hitting players with precision bullet handballs to their advantage like the truly elite extractors do.

If we pass on Dyson Sharp who I think will be an A grade, inside, ball hunting mid because we already have 2 x C Grade, ball hunting inside mids then that's peak stupidity.

I said it earlier in this thread after watching the North game this year I was set on Sharp for us. Watching LDU getting first hands on the footy and able to use his strength to release the footy with 2 blokes hanging off him was a stark contrast to our mids who cough it up everytime they were tackled.

We don't have this player on our list and he'll enable Lalor and Smillie to be the first receivers who have the ability, hopefully, to find the runners and distributors in space.

If you watch SA its Kellaway thats in and under feeding it out to Sharp

He is the one that’s polarising opinions. Some have him top 5, some outside top 10.
You can’t argue against his consistency, particularly in a draft that everyone is rating as mediocre.
Those that have him outside top 10 argue average footskills and the role of midfielders is changing to be more dynamic runners that can hurt you on the outside.
Imo it’s hard to ignore him, because what’s option B ? take a speculative pick inside the top 5.

Great post.

I also think it’s the kind of draft where you’ll see what recruiters/ evaluators/ draft keyboard warriors value in a prospect more than any other

Those that’ll have Sharp falling (like Dylan Alexander) seem to value physical attributes and potential far higher than those who would have Sharp at the pointy end and seemingly value output.

I think the thing the those that don’t have Sharp at the top end also fail to see is his improvement away from the ball which gives hope that he can also be effective outside of stoppage over time at AFL level.

If West Coast do get a top end FRP for Allen Compensation, I can see them going a CDT/ Duursma upside swing with one pick, and taking a bankable mid like Sharp with the other.

It’ll be interesting to see how some opinions change if Sharp shines in the SANFL towards the end of the year. If he proves himself at that level (as he did last year), surely he goes top 5 or 6 ( outside of academy picks).
Probably a good pick for WC are still building a midfield.
Not sure if we’ll invite a couple of kids down to play in our VFL team, like last year. Maybe Greeves/Duursma/ Lindsay get their chance at the next level.

With one of our picks i wouldn't mind either Barker or Leray.
I'd try and split one of our high picks Pick 7(ess) & F1 for pick3 & f2.
Bombers keen to keep the Dursma family close.(Offer pick 4 for the Norf Sibling).
Liked both Barker and Leray.Plenty of run off the wing which we need.

Hey mate, I saw in another post you said he has 2.89 sec 20m sprint time? Is that from sanfl preseason testing? I feel that would change a lot of the perceptions of him.

His results from 2023 of 8.14sec for the agility at sanfl preseason testing would crack top 10 at combine most years but this year he didn’t register in top 10 for anything at SANFL preseason.

To me personally I think he’s running gait and kicking style look far more fluid this year compared to watching him end of last year and his body shape looks more athletic. Plus that leap over Stevens last weekend wasn’t something I’d think I’d see from an unathletic player.

Kind of like McAuliffe , do you think his athletic testing results come end of year will catch people off guard or am I kidding myself?

He’s now been the best performed and probably acknowledged player for this group at 16, 17 and 18 year old levels. Topped with his leadership and top notch attitude I can’t see how wce pass him at 1 but I really hope we get him. I was very against drafting him when watching him last year, but the improvement in areas people were demanding, transition, forward craft, burst, kicking etc… are areas he’s clearly improved from last year to this year.

The Bumbers would be silly enough to do that ( Duursma bros).
6 touches last night for Norfs Duursma! Quality touches though I think Kano said at one stage 🙄
LeRay and Barker look good wing prospects. They played good games for the Academy against our 2s. They look identical, I was getting them mixed up, thinking wow how good is this kid.

Another solid performance from Cumming who hasn't needed to set the world on fire with his SA team dominating all comers at the national carnival, instead he's played as a strong cog in a very well oiled machine. There's not much that Cumming doesn't bring in his kit bag and we saw that here. His disposal and decision making is classy and efficient, he cracks in to contests and works hard defensively, he's strong aerially for his size and marks with clean hands, and he can get forward to impact on the scoreboard.

I wouldn't be against splitting one of the picks and grabbing both.
