If I'm Essendon and of rational mind - mutually exclusive concepts for the most part - I'm taking either of those deals in a heartbeat.

They ain't winning nothing in the next 3-4 years while Merrett's still on the scene, but can fast-track their rebuild right now.

Yes, there's an emotional element when the skipper's involved (except if you're West Coast of course 🤣), but they just need to cash in while he's got currency.

If they seriously won't listen to those reasonable offers simply because it's Hawthorn, then they deserve to remain stuck in the flag-less shit for another 25 years.

Could you imagine if this was Cotchin coming off a B&F, captain, contracted, etc no way you accept that, regardless if they are not winning anything anytime soon.

Hahaha too true unless it's West Coast :tearsofjoy:

If that's the offer, it's a big fat no. Pony up Hawks, and get two first-rounders within the top 10, that's what it's going to take.

We use the pick that West Coast will trade to us for Tylar Young to bid on Tylah Williams.

Tylah Williams
State: Western Australia
State League Club: Swan Districts
Community Club: Redcliffe
Date of Birth: 22/02/2007
Height: 175cm

An exciting Indigenous small forward, Williams showed his talent when he lit up the forward line for Western Australia during National Championships matches against the Allies and Victoria Metro. He emerged from Colts football with Swan Districts to show some distinct potential in two senior games late in the year for the Swans. Williams has dazzling speed and agility which was confirmed during Draft Combine testing, when he ran a slick 2.89 seconds in the 20m sprint (ranked second) and an elite 7.88 seconds in the agility test (ranked fourth). Is a member of the West Coast Eagles’ Next Generation Academy.

Let’s be very clear, if we do a deal for pick-3, then whomever is chosen at pick-3 is not going to be a player we wanted. This might be Robey… which means we had no intention of picking him anyway. If it’s Sharp then ditto. Cumming ditto. So if we give up 3, the player taken there is not someone we wanted … 100% guaranteed.
So, are you suggesting the Bombers will be required to tell us who they want to trade up for?

Its a big gamble if we haven’t had it confirmed who they want.

If the league offered you pick 2 for Nank would you take it or tell them and Nank to shove it up their arse?

If Cotchin indicated that he wanted out, like Merrett has, and if our club had been a basket case during and prior to his tenure as skipper for 25 years, I'd be grabbing that deal and driving Trent to Glenferrie or where tf Hawthorn call home nowadays.

When Cotchin turned 30, we hadn't even won our third flag yet. He was a massive part of a juggernaut, and was an integral part of the glue that held the dynasty together and his teammates to account. Totally incomparable to the Merrett situation.

It could be argued that Merrett is actually holding them back now.

I think you have misunderstood my point. Nank would have to want to leave for that to happen, and you know that ain't happening, so your point is moot.. No loyalty by Allen, the captain.

The pick 2 gift is what the CFL gives if the band 1 threshold is met. It's laughable that average players like Allen, Draper, McKay, and Frawley, to name a few, have netted their clubs very good picks, but that's the way the AFL rolls, and hopefully changes are coming soon for an overhaul to free agency and its compo picks.

That's you, and you're entitled to that way of thinking.

Say what, before 2017, we hadn't won a flag for 36 years. So to answer your point, no way would I want Cotchin going even if he wanted out.

And if a deal was presented to the club for pick 9, which will be in the teens and say those players that were mentioned that gets shut down in a heartbeat, and I expect the bombers to do the same.

why??

what principles/values are rubbing you up the wrong way??

RFC had the opportunity to let Balta go to FA before signing him up on a long contract

He was pushed in that direction by WCE. Trust me on that. He would have re-signed for a contract offer even remotely close to the Lions one.

I can only go by what Worsfold said.

Eagles head of football John Worsfold said the club continued to negotiate with Allen and his management throughout the season but was "unable to reach a suitable agreement".

"We understand the landscape of free agency and the players' right to explore, and we have decided not to match Brisbane's offer presented to Oscar," Worsfold said.

Why go on what Worsfold said??

When you go to the shops to buy something do you base it on what others say solely???

Yeah we gave an offer that no one in their right mind would accept next to Brisbane’s.

We have the cap space (3-4$m I’d estimate), WA boy, lifelong eagles fan and the captain.

If WCE wanted to keep him instead of pick 2, it would have happened.

Lol, what the heck are you even on about.

My point was related to Nank, we were talking about captains, Allen, Nank, and Merrett

Balta never wanted out of Richmond, and Richmond had no intention on not signing him hence the 7-year deal. They rate him highly.

Bro time to take a bex, he's the ****en head of football, so of course you will take what he says on face value.
If Blair Hartley commented on a player, would you question the legitimacy of the comment, I highly doubt it.

I’m pretty confident that if this happened we’d not be trading with you for at least a couple of years. At least bid on one of the ones we don’t want

Reminds me more of Ryan Griffen. 28yo, 2 x b&f winner, AA and captain at the dogs in 2014. Wanted out at the end of that season. Obviously not the same calibre of player but still a good player and club captain. Traded with pick 6 for Tom Boyd. Dogs won the flag 2 years later. If Merrett wants out you trade him out

I think its one of the worst acts I've ever seen or heard a club doing.
Didn't give him a reasonable contract offer, so he goes to meet with other clubs to get wce to increase their offer.
Then the absolute disgraceful act of putting him up in that press conference.
why, is Eagles not here to win premierships???

what is your point???

If Allen is not in their window why be *******ed???

The Eagles are in WA, lot of mining companies. Ever heard of the Lassonde curve building a mining company??

things are not supposed to be linear, they represent real life cycles and journeys

What was the offer?

Players do stay for less, it's called loyalty and love of the club, teammates. Now if the Eagles flat-out said we don't want you, similar to Clayton Oliver, then that's another story, but that didn't happen. So Eagles low-balled, going by your comment, but I can understand why to an extent, due to all his injuries.

Eagles indirectly told Allen to go, but look they are in a rebuild and frankly they are helping Allens career telling him it is in his interest to move on, what is the problem??

Why are lateral options such a problem if it helps others even if it helps you down the track???

not everything is supposed to be black and white and if it was it would be very boring

every wondered why rivers are not created in straight lines??? Flow like water ebb with the flow and roll with the forces like a hockey stick rather than linear, that is nature, that is the real world and humans are part of nature, they are not a computer program you can script to jump when you ask how high?

$1m x 6 years, our offer was almost half that, certainly in years.
