I have a feeling we're going to overlook Robey....

We would trade down then and get an extra top 10 as both Essendon and Melbourne will go hard at the pick to get him.

But I think we take him, arent Cal Twomeys phantom drafts usually pretty reliable? He obviously gets his info from clubs, not who he thinks should go in that position. He still has Robey going at 3 and Taylor 4 (ignoring the academy picks).

What do you think we'll do with the other pick?

I don’t know tbh. I’d like Grilj. He’s everything we need and different to what we have. But we will see. The Taylor info is pretty red hot but could it be another Bo Allen smokescreen? I would do a Robey and Grilj combo personally. Think Robey is now too tantalising to give up.

Ignore needs this draft and our hand will be even more forced by needs in future drafts. Already we're sort of seeing that where CDT will probably be best-available but we can't pick him because we loaded up on so many talls last year.

Trying to finalize our backline with Taylor when we need about 6 Grjls to balance our current list will make list management even harder going forwards.

But that assumes all our top picks are good and the players all play 200+ games. That wont be the case, a few probably wont make it, due to injuries or whatever. We only just started our rebuild less than 12 months ago, we still need to be taking the best available. In 2-3 years time we can see what we need to get. Our list wont peak until 2031-2037 type range.

If we become Premiers in the next decade, we will likely have 6+ players from other teams as well playing on grand final day. They will finish off our list needs, and we haven't even started doing that yet.

What Cal Twomey released wasn’t his mock draft, that was just his power rankings.

Granted that at this time of year most power rankings are somewhat reflective of a mock draft, it’s not certain as a power ranking is purely all about the player and doesn’t factor in clubs needs / wants.

That mock from Cal will come the week before the draft.

I don't think you can easily pick up a bunch of pacey/classy outside players, they're the rarest type.

You know why we got all those picks last year? Because players like Bolton and Daniel Rioli are really hard to come by.

Conversely every draft has a dozen Dyson Sharps and there's usually a bunch going for cheap in the trade market as well. For some reason everyone wants us to fill the easy-to-fill roles first and then once our list is mostly built we're just going to hope the hardest-to-find players just fall into our lap.

Hollands, a former pick No.7, has also been delisted with a year left on his deal at Ikon Park. The 23-year-old had been told to explore his options during the trade period after a difficult 12 months that included two stints away from the game due to personal issues.

After landing at the Blues on the final day of the 2023 trade period from Gold Coast, Hollands played 27 games across his two seasons at the club.

We drafted 3 kpf last draft...one of them at worst will float into our backline as a kpb in our 2030's pursuit of a flag.
We need to keep drafting best available at the moment

We can pick CDT. We need a ruck, and no reason he and Sims can’t play together.

3 older backs that don't play key position. If you want a replacement you take X
Miller in 3 years time will be nearing the end and that’s even if he’s still at Richmond. He’s a free agent once his contract runs out. We’ll need another KPD.

I’m not advocating that we draft Dean and I would rather X Taylor but my point is that I’d be okay if we did draft Dean. Taylor has a similar style to Grimes. Not quite as quick but slightly more attacking.

Juddy is our wing
Way to classy by foot, can kick from 50+ out. Once his knees good he’ll be fantastic 100+ gamer I hope
You’re fooling yourself. His knees are a major issue and he’ll be lucky to get back on the park. I feel sorry for Juddy but the reality is he’ll be lucky to play 50 games, plus he’s missed so much development. It’s sad but I wouldn’t put my eggs in that basket. Any games he plays will be a bonus. Fingers are crossed 🤞 for him.

Difficult to trade ready-made versions in? Sure
But a bit of a weird example to use when these players were taken at Pick 15 (Rioli) & Pick 29 (Bolton) in the draft
Even a player like NAS was taken at Pick 11 and from memory that was even a bit of a reach as he was seen as a mid-late first round prospect

Look at our premiership defences though.

Grimes Rance Vlastuin Broad Astbury Houli Short etc.

Only Vlastuin was a top 10 pick (#9) and then Rance a pick 18 supported by later picks/rookies/trades.

Just not sure we are going to invest so heavily into the backline with first round picks after Trainor and Gibcus

Games are won and lost through the midfield. Of course you need the other pieces, but the midfield is the crucial part of the jigsaw. Look at this years Grand Final, Brisbane had relatively young key forwards and relied on midfielders rotating forward to kick a winning score. Yes, they have some élite defenders, but it was ultimately their midfield that won the game.

If a midfielder doesn’t have elite leg speed, they need to be fearless, good skills by foot and hand, exceptional aerobic capacity to get to contest to contest and most importantly, a good decision maker under pressure.

If we look at Taranto and Hopper they are deficient in a number of these areas and that’s why, we currently have the second worst midfield in the competition. I know we are looking to integrate Lalor, McAuliffe, Hotton & Smillie through the middle, but I still think we need to add to the list, if we are going to fast track our rebuild.

Does a player like Sharp, play the Lachie Neil role for us in years to come, does Grjl have the tools to play the Will Ashcroft role or is Robey our next McCluggage.

People salivating over Robey’s end of the year when Sharp would have averaged that all year had he played in the CTL

Sharp is a better midfielder than Robey

Robey certainly more versatile but I really don’t think we’re screaming out for more general forwards who can rotate through the middle

When assessing Richmond's 2024 draftees, focusing on strengthening the midfield with high-ceiling players would be prudent. This strategy should still include bidding on Harry Dean, as it could disrupt Carlton's draft plans and provide an advantage for Richmond's later picks.

I get we need speed through the midfield but i think there is too much of a focus on that, particularly from the external media.

If we pick kids at the top end purely due to their leg speed I will be disappointed. It ain’t all of the sudden going to unlock a premiership run.

We are ain’t close to competing. And imo, at draft 2 of our almost ground zero rebuild.

Stack the team with best available talent. Hopefully starting with robey or CDT at 3
