And in news that shocks no one, AFL HQ goes the country bumpkin route and effectively sweep the know cheating of a club.

Who would have guessed?!
Cotton On may just open another outlet. Let's wait for a decision on Cotton On being the major apparel partner of the AFL commission, Simmonds Homes will have a patch on their apparel, but WILL NOT, 100% not, no way, will the AFL get a sub division with free homes and GMHBA will come on as the official insurer of said homes and obviously the commission employees and their families.

You just have to laugh at it being so blatant

You have to wonder what else also went on?

Half a tin foil hat on:

I wonder if they looked at property transfers, business deals ie pubs, jobs for some family members etc etc

But they would come under "third party payments" which are definitely not correlated to player retention...

Would be pretty funny if this is actually all it is, whilst everyone is up in arms about a non existent issue. I for one don't read much into it, i think they're an exceptionally well run club and everyone chucking a narnar is just jealous. Not to mention players are obviously going to be endorsed by major sponsors, our whole squad drives VW's.

When it comes to things like this the AFL would be stupid to assist a cover up - the powers at be simply would not risk their reputation, especially in this day and age where cover ups get exposed 99% of the time whilst immediate accountability actually saves face. I'm pretty confident JR's intel is spot on.

I'm sure there are loopholes for the things you mentioned. I also think it would be ignorant to think all 17 other clubs in the league don't do it also. At the end of the day if a club wants to sell it's own property at a loss, that's up to them - technically you can't class that as a third party payment.

Geelong is a very well-run organisation. They were smart enough to hide their dealings without leaving a paper trail.

The AFL know what's happening. The minor infractions they got Geelong for were just a means for them to enact some sort of punishment while putting out the message that Geelong weren't doing anything really shady, but we're allowing minor perks that only warrant a small fine.

This is an orchestrated cover up. Geelong weren't stupid enough to leave an open trail. The AFL showed up, turned a couple of cushions over, looked under the couch but conveniently walked past the cupboard full of brown paper bags.

I think this is naieve and only half-true. Have you read The Boys Club? The AFL will absolutely cover up as much as they think they can get away with. What they can get away with obviously being of key importance. However, when assessing that, you have to look at the complicity of the sports 'journalists' that cover the game. They are reliant on access to players and personnel for their content and they are very careful about jeopardising those relationships. For the right story they may be willing to burn some bridges but I think it's a huge factor in operating as a regular footy media person. It's no coincidence that The Boys Club was written by someone who isn't (and won't be) part of that inner coterie that haven't upset the AFL too much.

It was easy to cover things up back in the day, it was also easy to save face even if they blew up, hence cover ups were seen as legitimate tactical options. I just don't think it's the case in this day and age, especially this country where anything and everything is threatened with litigation. There is more scrutiny on CEO's and GM's in the eyes of the media and public then there has ever been, even over the pettiest of issues.

And let's say it for what it is - everyone absolutely loves a conspiracy theory, especially if it induces outrage.

Im not so sure you had a decade ago a ex CEO try to tip off Essendon with a phone call that ASADA were about to come for them.

I mean does anyone know where the "undisclosed 3rd party payments" went? they were never lodged with the AFL and its happened twice in a decade with the same club Geelong.

Coincidence? maybe but its dodgy, lets see if it affects the way they can continue to bring in A grade talent every off-season given they are under "stricter" monitoring now

I think it's getting easier to get away with cover ups in this era of fake news and nobody knowing what to believe any more. It's harder to find objective 'facts' and so it's easier for people to get away with lies. Plus people like Trump make it more acceptable to be a bald faced liar in a way that just didn't use to be true.

And the rise of social media has coincided with the recession of investigative journalism. These days there is less resources than ever put into proper journalism that expose big news and corruption.

So, I respect your different points of view and I even often agree with them, but not this time.

Sounds like Josh Kelly is going in for hip resurfacing surgery. For those not familiar with the procedure, it's essentially a hip replacement that preserves more bone of the joint but still involves the insertion of a metallic "ball and socket". Andy Murray and George Burgess underwent this surgery but history will show both were no where near back to their best post surgery. Given Kelly's game is based on explosiveness and running, can't see him being the same player when / if he returns.

There might not be anyone in the league who annoys me as consistently as Craig McRae. The media fawn over him and every little smug thing he says and give him so little real scrutiny over his decisions despite being the head coach of the biggest and most media-saturated club in the country. He can’t cop that he spoke clumsily and loosely about Daicos and the Brownlow and goes on to throw Darcy Cameron under the bus by all but stating Daicos should’ve won the Pies B&F in his attempt to defend the glib thing he said in the first place.

I don’t dislike that many of the current Pies players (including Daicos for that matter) but the coach is enough to make me keen to see the Pies fall apart next year. Ditto Bailey Smith and Geelong, for that matter.

Well stated. He’s a charlatan.

McRae loves the sound of his own voice.
