Autopsy 2025 AFL Round 6: A Dog day afternoon

Having no tall forwards does this. Last year - no King against Dogs. Membrey kicked 3 and dogs win by 60 points.

This year - no King, Membrey or anyone else of note.

Obviously, not looking at Bont who will pick up the max votes is a glaring oversight.

An idea could have been to play Macrae on Bont.

Right now St Kilda is adrift till the mid season break when hopefully some reinforcements arrive from MSD and return from injuries.

This is exactly what frustrates me about Hill. Goes out of his way to avoid contact. Will run around packs looking for a cheapie (which is fine), but there are times where he will wait to see if someone else will tackle when he is the one that should be committing to it.
When there is a loose ball to win you can tell he is conscious of getting hit by the way he tries to win the ball. Instead of going down to pick it up he tentatively reaches for it and tries to pull the ball back towards him or he'll run over the ball and miss/fumble it because instead of focusing purely on the ball he is watching his peripherals to see if someone's going to crunch him.
I see what you are saying, but I think he is not that type of Powell-pepper bulldozer type. He has great fingers/hands and a burst of speed, so it makes sense that his priority is to snatch and escape and scoot away. But I don’t question his courage. I’ve seen him collide and have a go.

Just over 12 months ago same round.
Dogs won by 60.

This year
Dogs win by 71.
They have us 4-1 over the last five. I still remember that horrendous 111 point loss in ‘21! But somehow, we managed to win in 2023, round two. Michito booted 3! And guess who booted two? Caminiti! 13 of those running around yesterday played.

Without a midfield it shows up the deficiency's around the field.

Amazing first game where Macrae didn't perform we are flogged and if the put a stopper on him Steele should of had a field day but he was hopeless and with a out of sorts Marshall our younger brigade of Windhager and Garcia had no chance.

I can't understand why our best contested player Owens is not in the position of inside mid , Hannerbery said that is where he should be playing even Steele has mentioned it when he first came on the seen - but we use him as a ruckman.

We all know our backline is lacking that big defender but when you have the other teams mids ripping us apart they have no chance and Hammer who is development needs leaders around him which he has not got.

Lyon needs to start playing players who are fit and have form - Steele is nowhere near fit and Henry and Marshall were in the same boat.

If you told me at the start of the year we’d be 3-3 with 3 trips to Adelaide, no king, no pou, no Howard and a broken Marshall and Steele I’d have laughed in your face.
Things aren’t as bad as we’re making out.
A lot to like in the first 6 weeks. Last night sucked, but we’re in a much better space than we have been for years. We also have young talent in the reserves banging the door down for a change.

Wasn't just the midfield, it was the incredible inefficiency of disposal, lack of decision, not even attempting to shut down the Dogs ball movement etc etc

They are controllable. What the opposition does isn't. You can get beaten by 8 goals and just outplayed. Last night we were beaten by 71 but should have been 100.
Inept is not the word.

Got to my first saints game of the year last night, and gee I went hope flat.

I don't mind losing, it's just that I thought these absolute bashings may have been behind us.

Man I hope Henry can overcome this injury, he was no where near the level.

Steele obviously been talked about, but he looks finished as a player. Genuinely not in our best 23 at the current time.

Marshall also looking seriously banged up, no wonder we are chasing TDK hard, big ro may only have another 2 years left in him after carrying a huge load the past 5 years.

Windhager and Garcia, can't knock there effort and desire, but unsure if they have the polish to be A grade mids. Still time though.

I have definitely been disappointed with Wilson this year. Second year blues happens to a lot of players, but he looks timid and is having very little impact.

Gotta love Owens and Higgins efforts, but they need some serious help and height up forward.

I actually liked caminitis game down back. Was beating Darcy before he went off.

Not sure what I expected from Ross’ press conference but there wasn’t enough detail for us supporters like why didn’t we compete or why Ro keeps looking at his opponent in the centre

Lyon got a bit testy with the reporter at the end of the presser when asked about team selection, and promptly brought it to an end.

Of course it was
But look at our culture fly!!
FFS we had a chance at a top 5 mid and blew it - Langford would be a huge addition to that midfield right now but no we got our 5 mins of glory beating a sliding Carlton
Dumb
You know what? It’s done.
Want to go back to Paddy/ Petracca again?

It's funny, the season has started so well given the hard draw but looking at the next few weeks jeez it doesn't get much easier!

We need to find a way to be competitive next week, can't let that insipid performance become the norm.

Wouldn't be surprised at all to see some seniors managed this week.

If we can get to 4 & 4 the fixture really opens up for us to capitalise on IF we’re good enough.

At the start of the season there were plenty suggesting we’d be 1-7.

Essentially, why state the obvious and single out people after a loss? Helps no one.

It's pretty much a you can see Ro is struggling, you then hear Heath has no tank, Keeler has no body, Dodson is too raw, Boyd is not preferred and what other ruck chop out do you want to discredit type things? So you know Ro will at least be that big body cracking in on a CC and halving a ruck contest, we just then also didn't have anyone around him to go anywhere or do anything worth a damn.

So what he did say was what they knew and what they did and that essentially the boys played into the Dogs hands and we lost ourselves. That's indicative of no isolation, just move on as for review as to why how who and etc.

After a match, nah, you cite grats Dogs, played us like a fiddle, we tried these things and didn't work and boy footy is hard huh...

Not sure 7 or 8 possessions for Tarau is enough to warrant a promotion he needs to be getting 15+ especially if he plays down back with the ball consistently be down there.
His role isn't about getting possessions though, its about intercepting, defending, impacting in the air and following up

As long as he attacks the ball, executes his marks and adequately accounts for a man, he's doing his job

Deplorable effort. Not a single player should walk off that field thinking they played well. Particularly the senior players.
I think the backline can enjoy a cold beer after that. The ball was living down there - how we didnt lose by 100+ is only thanks to their efforts and the BOG: G.Post.
Excited for Hammers further development down back, very worried we derail it by swinging him forward though.

Agree but the problem is...when will Steele and Marshall get back to a competitive level if at all?

If those types of Marshall games become a more common occurrence then we should be worried - him at his best is so important for us imo

Pretty surprised at the number of fans writing off jack steele after a poor game. Yes it looked bad but he's coming off an injury and clearly isn't right. Similar things have happened in the last few years and he's bounced back to some really good form, at 29 I don't see why he can't do that again. Surely he's earned the benefit of the doubt, let's back him in

They might not, and I don’t really think it matters beyond this season. I’d love Marshall to find his form of the last few seasons as he has trade value. But it’s unlikely either he and Steele will have a massive say in our next premiership.

Brisbane is a write off I'd say but the Freo game after that could be winnable. Back to back 6 day breaks though, if I was betting on it unfortunately I'd predict we lose both :(

I'm much more concerned with the trend of playing injured player when they appear not right than I am with Steele being finished.

That's at least Steele, Marshall, Henry twice, Butler, King and Crouch all in the past 2 years who have been rushed back from injuries or played with them and clearly being underdone to a degree that harms team performance.
